1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?
I am Jami Mehtonen, the vocalist-bassist/main songwriter of GOREKAUST. Currently I’m mainly interested in jangle-pop, as well as finding a new job, the unemployment-situation in Finland currently being the absolute farce that it is.
2. I've recently started exploring the Finnish underground metal scene again, about 30 years after first getting hooked on the early work of Beherit and Impaled Nazarene. I'm slowly discovering how diverse it is today — from sludge/doom and post-black metal to OSDM, which seems to be highly praised in Finland right now. Would you agree that death metal is currently the dominant force in Finland? And when did Gorekaust start, and how has it engaged with the OSDM scene?
For (at least?) the past 5 years or so there’s absolutely been an OSDM-boom going on in the Finnish underground, with even some occasional mainstream-media attention, so yeah, I’m most definitely gonna agree on that.
GOREKAUST was formed in the latter half of 2020, around the same time as many other bands from the Uusimaa-area (and in our case, Riihimäki) were starting out. Right from the start we got connected with other bands from the new-found scene, made alot of friends, and ever since then we’ve played countless shows & hung out alot together during these 5 rather Gorekaustic years. Especially during the very earliest years the scene was really tightly-knit, someone was always booking a gig to some youth-centre, or a squat, or a shitty bar, or whatever, always with the same rotation of maybe 5 bands on the lineup. A proper circle-jerk if you ask me. It was always really fun though. We still do collaborate/hang out with the other bands dudes, just not as much as we used to, ‘cuz as time has passed every band’s kinda gone their own path so to speak.
3. From the old days I remember Convulse — from the city of Nokia, which was at least 8–9 years before I got my first cell phone Nokia 3110. Their album World Without God had a uniquely morbid sound in the vein of European death metal, in contrast to Sentenced’s North From Here, which sounded very much like US-style technical death metal to me at the time. Only later did I discover bands like Demilich with their oppressive atmosphere, the doomy Rippikoulu who came from a metal/punk background, and of course the ultra-slow Unholy with The Second Ring of Power.
This all makes the early ’90s feel like a very diverse and rich death-doom subculture environment. Do you think there is any connection between these pioneers and today’s scene - and if so, how is their legacy reflected in Finnish death metal now?
I feel like the strongest influence from the 90s Finnish scene is mostly "symbolic" honestly. You know, people drawing comparisons like "Hey there were Finnish youngsters doing death metal in the 90s, and now the same thing is happening!", rather than actually comparing these 2 scenes musically. I think the newer generation of bands here in Finland have taken more musical influence from the old US bands like Deicide, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and so on. That being said, of course bands like Convulse and Demigod can also be heard on alot of newer bands' material, but I still think that even in those cases they're relatively minor influences most of the time.
4. If you were to trace Gorekaust's DNA, who would be the proto-parents of your sound?
In the very beginning we were listening to alot of bestial black metal like Archgoat, Blasphemy, Revenge, Beherit, etc. as well as oldschool New York brutal death metal like Pyrexia, Afterbirth, Repudilation and Internal Bleeding (to name a few). All of these bands definitely had a huge impact on creating the basis for our sound, with us trying to kinda combine that primitive aggression & darkness of bestial black metal with that hardcore-influenced “groovy” brutality of those NY bands. Later on we’ve started spicing things up a little with kinda weirder riffs and compositions, by in the process taking more influences from bands like Morbid Angel, Demilich, Death, and so on.
5. Last question on the pioneers — back in the day, black/death metal was often tied to debauchery and self-destructive antics. I loved reading all those insane stories and cracking up at the madness. Is that kind of lifestyle still around today, or has the scene mellowed out and become more about healthy living?
The word “healthy” might be a bit of a stretch, I suppose we also have our quirks. However it might be, I’d still like to think that we’re at least a little wiser perhaps.
6. Between 2021 and today, Gorekaust has released several singles, EPs, and two full-length albums. I own the "Fleshcross" cassette issued by Iron Corpse Records - could you tell me whether the other releases were made available in physical form as well, and which labels were involved?
The very first physical release that we ever got was a cassette pressing of our debut EP “Putrefied Icon” released by Necrolatry Records, including our debut single “The Seed” as kind of a bonus track. The same label also released our debut full-length “Ancient Halls of Emptiness” on tape, and in turn we also released a CD pressing of said album via my & my friend Kassu’s diy-label TÄH! Records. After that, the “Dismal Necrosis” EP only got a very limited CD release via TÄH!, and now most recently for “Fleshcross” of course we’ve gotten the Iron Corpse tape pressing, as well as a tape+CD pressing via Iron Fortress.
7. "Fleshcross" sounds massive — how did you get that sound, and how much did the recording studio contribute to it? What were the biggest challenges you faced during the recording process?
Just by trial-and-error really. As usual we had like a billion “final mixes” of the album and at one point just decided that enough’s enough and to release it as it is. The recording studio most definitely contributed alot to the sound, comparing to Ancient Halls for example which was really poorly recorded, and even tho that’s a good album too, it still really shows in the final product. Putting the eternal struggles of post-production aside, the biggest challenge was really preparing for the recordings. We had rather limited time due to our very limited recording budget, so we had to really grind those songs to perfection in a pretty short period of time before entering the studio which was quite a test of strength. We managed tho, and got the album recorded basically in like 5 days with rather satisfactory results in my opinion.
8. When listening to "Fleshcross", I hear these high-pitched notes that create a really interesting sense of anxiety. How did you record those? Are they played by striking the strings behind the bridge, or did you use some unusual tool or instrument — maybe even something like an egg-slicer?
Haha oh yeah, hate to break the mysticism here but they were just done through our guitarist Jerri’s pitch-shifter pedal. He primarily uses it to shift between drop C and drop B tunings without having to tune his guitar separately every time. During the recordings he just started to fuck around with the pedal as a joke, adjusting the knobs to +2 octaves. After laughing about it for a good while, we thought they sounded rather awesome and decided to include that effect on the album.
9. Lyrically speaking, how do you approach themes of death and the end of life - do they manifest through divine forces, mass infection, war, or something else? And within your lyrical universe, is there any hint of hope for an afterlife, or is it more bleak and nihilistic?
It depends on my mood, but all of the above really haha. Traditionally I suppose it’s been more of just basic brainless gore lyricism, but lately I’ve grown a more mature interest in occult horror and occultism/esotericism in general, so I suppose those themes will manifest into Gorekaust lyrics as well in the future. Personally I tend to believe in some sort of an afterlife, reincarnation or whatever, but in Gorekaust lyrics there most certainly is no hope of such for the subject of our lyrical torment.
10. I come from Central-Eastern Europe, a region full of legendary ‘philanthropists’ like Countess Báthory, Count Dracula and long list of less known local politicians — people famous for their very individualistic ways of helping common folk in and out of their misery. We never really had strong doomsday cult vibes here, which I kind of envy in the American scene. How about Finland — are there any historical or modern figures, myths, or cult-like movements that readers should check out for inspiration?
Sure there are/have been interesting figures within the Finnish occult like Pekka Ervast, Pekka Siitoin (mainly for his comedic value, not really gonna endorse him for quite obvious reasons), as well as more contemporarily Johannes Nefastos, but I feel like the most intriguing figures/events are some of the more “recent” (read: within the last 100 years) murder cases in Finland, especially the unsolved ones. You know like the Bodom lake murders, the murder of Kyllikki Saari, the Hyvinkää dismemberment murder and so on.
11. Is everyone in Finland secretly training for the Winter Olympics just to beat us sweaty people from the south? And what’s your own favourite (un)healthy activity of choice?
That is classified information of the Finnish state, so no comment haha. As for myself, during winter I enjoy long walks and watching ice hockey (as believe it or not, I cannot skate despite being Finnish). During non-snowy times I enjoy a load of different sports with my friends, like playing tennis, football, running, swimming, whatever have you.
12. Can excessive consumption of Finlandia vodka be offset by a healthy plunge into a semi-frozen lake? What does that kind of ritual do to a man’s body and soul?
It certainly is a life-altering and soul-cleansing experience that I’d warmly recommend to everyone on this planet, although professionals like me are not familiar with concepts such as “excessive use of Finlandia vodka”. I feel more like I couldn’t possibly drink enough alcohol, but each to their own.
13. How far north have you managed to travel in Finland? And when I decide to take a swim in the Barents Sea, which route would you recommend - which cities should I stop in to catch shows by local bands along the way?
I’ve been to Rovaniemi when I was little, and more recently I visited Salla a couple of years ago. For the exact route there I couldn’t say for certain, but at least in Helsinki, Turku, and Joensuu there are worthwhile metal/hardcore gigs pretty regularly.
14. In your opinion, what’s the most criminally underrated death metal album of all time?
If we’re counting demos here, then the only correct answer for me would most definitely be “Purging of Impurity” by Repudilation. Just ridiculously raw, heavy and chaotic 14 minutes of oldschool brutal death metal, served New York style. Absolutely love that demo, I actually have a half-sleeve tattoo of its artwork on my right arm! But if we’re only counting studio full-length albums, then I’d have to say “Sermon of Mockery” by Pyrexia. Maybe not the most underground release of all time, but still doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Absolutely great New York brutality once again.
15. Which music album, music video, and book have impressed you most recently?
(I gotta admit that I haven’t really seen any music videos for a while, I’ll skip that) The latest 3-song release “Promo 2025” by the Finnish negative hardcore outfit Kova Totuus has been playing on repeat for me since it’s release, absolutely banging in-your-face working-class hardcore straight outta Turku. Definitely check them out if you’re into hardcore. Lately I’ve been reading “On tapahtunut jotakin hyvää” by Tuomas Marjamäki and Sari Leskinen, I got it as a christmas present from my mom and so far I’ve enjoyed it greatly. It’s a book about a Finnish musician Juice Leskinen and his last years of life together with his aforementioned wife Sari Leskinen.
16. Are you fans of horror movies? And can you recommend any cool Finnish horror films?
I wouldn’t really call myself a *fan* of horror movies, I just really enjoy movies overall. Sure there are great horror movies that I keep in high regard, but I’m more into old classic mafia movies and psychological thrillers and so on. Also I honestly haven’t seen a single *good* Finnish horror movie, but I’d have to recommend “Painajainen merellä” just for its absolute comedic value. Although unintentional, it never fails to make me laugh.

1. Kto si, čomu sa venuješ a čo ťa v poslednom čase zaujíma najviac?
Volám sa Jami Mehtonen, som spevák-basgitarista a hlavný autor skladieb kapely GOREKAUST. Momentálne sa najviac zaujímam o jangle-pop, a tiež o hľadanie novej práce, keďže súčasná situácia s nezamestnanosťou vo Fínsku je – povedzme si to na rovinu – úplna fraška.
2. Nedávno som sa po približne 30 rokoch opäť začal zaujímať o fínsku undergroundovú metalovú scénu, odkedy som sa kedysi chytil na rané nahrávky Beherit a Impaled Nazarene. Postupne zisťujem, aká je dnes pestrá – od sludge/doom a post-black metalu až po OSDM, ktoré je momentálne vo Fínsku zjavne veľmi vysoko cenené. Súhlasil by si s tým, že death metal je dnes vo Fínsku dominantnou silou? A kedy vznikol Gorekaust a ako sa zapojil do OSDM scény?
Minimálne posledných päť rokov tu vo fínskom undergrounde prebieha jasný boom OSDM, ktorý si občas všimli dokonca aj mainstreamové médiá, takže áno – s týmto tvrdením rozhodne súhlasím.
GOREKAUST vznikol v druhej polovici roku 2020, približne v rovnakom čase ako množstvo ďalších kapiel z oblasti Uusimaa (v našom prípade z Riihimäki). Od úplného začiatku sme sa napojili na ostatné kapely z tejto novo sa rodiacej scény, spriatelili sme sa a odvtedy sme počas týchto pomerne gorekaustických piatich rokov odohrali nespočetné množstvo koncertov a strávili spolu veľa času.
Najmä v úplne prvých rokoch bola scéna extrémne súdržná – vždy niekto bookoval koncert v nejakom mládežníckom centre, squate, hnusnom bare alebo niekde inde, zakaždým s viac-menej rovnakou rotáciou asi piatich kapiel na pódiu. Ak sa ma pýtaš, bolo to poriadne vzájomné leštenie ega. Ale vždy to bola veľká zábava.
Stále s ostatnými kapelami spolupracujeme a stretávame sa, len už nie tak intenzívne ako kedysi, pretože s postupom času si každá kapela akosi išla vlastnou cestou.
3. Zo starých čias si pamätám Convulse – z mesta Nokia, a to bolo aspoň 8–9 rokov predtým, než som mal svoj prvý mobil Nokia 3110. Ich album World Without God mal jedinečne morbídny zvuk v duchu európskeho death metalu, na rozdiel od North From Here od Sentenced, ktorý mi vtedy znel skôr ako americký technický death metal. Až neskôr som objavil kapely ako Demilich s ich dusivou atmosférou, doomových Rippikoulu s metalovo-punkovým základom a, samozrejme, ultrápomalých Unholy s albumom The Second Ring of Power.
To všetko robí z raných 90. rokov veľmi rozmanité a bohaté death-doomové subkultúrne prostredie. Vidíš nejaké prepojenie medzi týmito pioniermi a dnešnou scénou – a ak áno, ako sa ich odkaz odráža v súčasnom fínskom death metale?
Mám pocit, že najsilnejší vplyv fínskej scény z 90. rokov je dnes skôr symbolický. Vieš, v zmysle porovnaní typu: „Hej, aj v 90. rokoch robili fínski mladíci death metal, a teraz sa deje to isté!“, než že by sa tieto dve scény reálne porovnávali po hudobnej stránke.
Myslím si, že novšia generácia fínskych kapiel čerpá omnoho viac z amerických kapiel ako Deicide, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse a podobne. Samozrejme, kapely ako Convulse či Demigod je možné počuť aj v tvorbe mnohých novších skupín, ale aj v týchto prípadoch ide väčšinou o skôr vedľajšie vplyvy.
4. Ak by si mal vystopovať DNA zvuku Gorekaust, kto by boli jeho „pra-rodičia“?
Úplne na začiatku sme počúvali veľa bestiálneho black metalu ako Archgoat, Blasphemy, Revenge, Beherit a podobne, ale aj oldschool newyorský brutálny death metal v štýle Pyrexia, Afterbirth, Repudilation či Internal Bleeding (aby som vymenoval aspoň niektoré). Všetky tieto kapely mali obrovský vplyv na formovanie základov nášho zvuku – snažili sme sa akosi skombinovať primitívnu agresiu a temnotu bestiálneho black metalu s hardcoreom ovplyvnenou „groovy“ brutalitou tých newyorských kapiel. Neskôr sme to začali trochu okoreňovať divnejšími riffmi a kompozíciami, pričom sme postupne viac nasávali vplyvy kapiel ako Morbid Angel, Demilich, Death a ďalších.

5. Posledná otázka k pionierom – kedysi bol black/death metal často spájaný s výstredným životným štýlom a sebadeštruktívnym správaním. Miloval som čítanie všetkých tých šialených príbehov a smial som sa nad tým chaosom. Existuje takýto životný štýl ešte dnes, alebo sa scéna upokojila a viac sa orientuje na „zdravý život“?
Slovo „zdravý“ je možno trochu silné, myslím, že aj my máme svoje zvláštnosti. Nech je to akokoľvek, rád by som si myslel, že sme dnes aspoň o niečo múdrejší než kedysi.
6. Medzi rokmi 2021 a dnes Gorekaust vydal viacero singlov, EP a dva plnohodnotné albumy. Vlastním kazetu Fleshcross vydanú u Iron Corpse Records – vieš povedať, či boli aj ostatné nahrávky dostupné vo fyzickej podobe a ktoré vydavateľstvá sa na tom podieľali?
Úplne prvým fyzickým vydaním, ktoré sme kedy mali, bola kazetová verzia nášho debutového EP „Putrefied Icon“, ktorú vydali Necrolatry Records, pričom náš debutový singel „The Seed“ bol pridaný ako akýsi bonus. Rovnaký label potom vydal aj náš debutový album „Ancient Halls of Emptiness“ na kazete, a zároveň sme vydali aj CD verziu tohto albumu prostredníctvom môjho a môjho kamaráta Kassuho DIY labelu TÄH! Records. EP „Dismal Necrosis“ potom vyšlo len v extrémne limitovanej CD verzii cez TÄH! a najnovšie pri „Fleshcross“ sme samozrejme dostali kazetové vydanie od Iron Corpse, ako aj kombináciu kazeta + CD od Iron Fortress.
7. Fleshcross znie masívne – ako ste dosiahli tento zvuk a akú veľkú úlohu v tom zohralo nahrávacie štúdio? Aké boli najväčšie výzvy počas nahrávania?
V podstate metódou pokus–omyl. Ako zvyčajne sme mali asi miliardu „finálnych mixov“ a v jednom bode sme si povedali, že už stačilo, a album vydáme taký, aký je. Nahrávacie štúdio k výslednému zvuku určite prispelo veľkým dielom, najmä v porovnaní s Ancient Halls, ktorý bol nahratý dosť zle – a hoci je to tiež dobrý album, na výsledku je to cítiť. Ak odhliadnem od večných bojov v postprodukcii, najväčšou výzvou bola samotná príprava na nahrávanie. Mali sme pomerne obmedzený čas kvôli veľmi nízkemu rozpočtu, takže sme museli skladby v krátkom čase drilovať k dokonalosti ešte pred vstupom do štúdia, čo bola slušná skúška odolnosti. Zvládli sme to však a album sme v podstate nahrali za približne päť dní s, podľa mňa, pomerne uspokojivým výsledkom.
8. Pri počúvaní Fleshcross počujem vysoké, piskľavé tóny, ktoré vytvárajú veľmi zaujímavý pocit úzkosti. Ako ste ich nahrávali? Sú hrané údermi na struny za kobylkou, alebo ste použili nejaký netradičný nástroj či pomôcku – možno dokonca niečo ako krájač na vajíčka?
Haha, áno, nerád narúšam mystiku, ale bolo to urobené jednoducho pomocou pitch-shifter pedálu nášho gitaristu Jerriho. Používa ho hlavne na prepínanie medzi ladením drop C a drop B bez toho, aby musel zakaždým znovu ladiť gitaru. Počas nahrávania sa s tým pedálom zo srandy začal hrať a nastavil ho na +2 oktávy. Po tom, čo sme sa na tom chvíľu smiali, sme si povedali, že to vlastne znie dosť skvelo, a rozhodli sme sa tento efekt na albume použiť.
9. Z hľadiska textov – ako pristupuješ k témam smrti a konca života? Prejavujú sa prostredníctvom božských síl, masovej nákazy, vojny alebo niečoho iného? A existuje vo vašom textovom svete aspoň náznak nádeje na posmrtný život, alebo je všetko skôr bezútešné a nihilistické?
Závisí to od mojej nálady, ale v podstate všetko z uvedeného, haha. Tradične to boli skôr jednoduché, bezmozgové gore texty, ale v poslednom čase som si vypestoval zrelší záujem o okultný horor a okultizmus/ezoteriku všeobecne, takže predpokladám, že tieto témy sa v budúcnosti v textoch Gorekaust objavia čoraz viac. Osobne mám sklon veriť v nejakú formu posmrtného života, reinkarnácie alebo niečo podobné, ale v textoch Gorekaust rozhodne pre subjekt nášho lyrického mučenia žiadna nádej neexistuje.
10. Pochádzam zo stredovýchodnej Európy – regiónu plného legendárnych „filantropov“ ako Alžbeta Bátoriová, gróf Dracula a dlhý zoznam menej známych miestnych politikov, preslávených svojimi veľmi osobitými spôsobmi, ako „pomáhali“ obyčajným ľuďom z ich biedy aj do nej. Nikdy sme tu nemali silné apokalyptické kultové vibrácie, čo americkej scéne trochu závidím. Ako je to vo Fínsku – existujú nejaké historické alebo moderné postavy, mýty či kultové hnutia, ktoré by si čitatelia mali pozrieť ako zdroj inšpirácie?
Určite áno – vo fínskom okultnom prostredí sa objavili zaujímavé postavy ako Pekka Ervast, Pekka Siitoin (najmä pre jeho komickú hodnotu, rozhodne ho nechcem odporúčať z úplne zrejmých dôvodov) a v novšej dobe Johannes Nefastos. Napriek tomu mi však prídu najzaujímavejšie niektoré relatívne „nedávne“ prípady vrážd (teda v priebehu posledných 100 rokov), najmä tie nevyriešené. Napríklad vraždy pri jazere Bodom, vražda Kyllikki Saari, rozštvrtenie v Hyvinkää a podobne.
11. Trénuje sa vo Fínsku každý potajomky na zimnú olympiádu len preto, aby porazil nás spotených ľudí z juhu? A aká je tvoja obľúbená (ne)zdravá aktivita?
To sú utajené informácie fínskeho štátu, takže bez komentára, haha. Čo sa týka mňa, počas zimy si užívam dlhé prechádzky a sledovanie hokeja (a verte či nie, napriek tomu, že som Fín, neviem korčuľovať). Keď nie je sneh, baví ma množstvo rôznych športov s kamarátmi – tenis, futbal, beh, plávanie, čokoľvek príde.
12. Dá sa nadmerná konzumácia vodky Finlandia vyvážiť zdravým ponorom do polozamrznutého jazera? Čo takýto rituál spraví s telom a dušou človeka?
Určite ide o život meniaci a dušu očisťujúci zážitok, ktorý by som srdečne odporučil každému na tejto planéte – hoci profesionáli ako ja nepoznajú pojmy ako „nadmerná konzumácia vodky Finlandia“. Skôr mám pocit, že nie je možné vypiť príliš veľa alkoholu, ale každý nech si ide po svojom.
13. Ako ďaleko na sever si sa vo Fínsku dostal? A keď sa rozhodnem zaplávať si v Barentsovom mori, akú trasu by si odporučil – v ktorých mestách by som sa mal zastaviť, aby som po ceste chytil koncerty miestnych kapiel?
Keď som bol malý, bol som v Rovaniemi, a pred pár rokmi som navštívil Sallu. Presnú trasu neviem úplne odporučiť, ale minimálne v Helsinkách, Turku a Joensuu sú celkom pravidelne zaujímavé metalové a hardcore koncerty.
14. Podľa teba – ktorý deathmetalový album je najviac podcenený?
Ak rátame aj demá, tak pre mňa existuje len jedna správna odpoveď – “Purging of Impurity” od Repudilation. Úplne absurdne surových, ťažkých a chaotických 14 minút oldschool brutal death metalu v newyorskom štýle. Ten demo materiál absolútne milujem – dokonca mám jeho obal vytetovaný ako polrukáv na pravej ruke! Ak však rátame len štúdiové dlhohrajúce albumy, tak by som povedal “Sermon of Mockery” od Pyrexia. Možno to nie je najviac undergroundová vec na svete, ale rozhodne nedostáva zďaleka toľko pozornosti, koľko by si zaslúžila. Opäť absolútne skvelá newyorská brutalita.
15. Ktorý hudobný album, hudobné video a kniha ťa v poslednom čase najviac zaujali?
(Musím priznať, že hudobné videá som už nejaký čas nepozeral, takže túto časť preskočím.) Najnovšie trojskladbové vydanie “Promo 2025” od fínskej negative hardcore kapely Kova Totuus mi ide dookola od vydania – totálne drvivý, priamočiary robotnícky hardcore z Turku. Určite si ich pozrite, ak máte radi hardcore. V poslednom čase čítam knihu “On tapahtunut jotakin hyvää” od Tuomasa Marjamäkiho a Sari Leskinen – dostal som ju na Vianoce od mamy a zatiaľ si ju veľmi užívam. Je to kniha o fínskom hudobníkovi Juiceovi Leskinenovi a jeho posledných rokoch života spolu s jeho manželkou Sari Leskinen.
16. Ste fanúšikovia hororov? A vieš odporučiť nejaké dobré fínske horory?
Nepovedal by som, že som fanúšik hororov – skôr mám rád filmy všeobecne. Jasné, existujú skvelé horory, ktoré si veľmi vážim, ale viac ma bavia staré klasické mafiánske filmy, psychologické trilery a podobne. Úprimne povedané, nevidel som zatiaľ ani jeden naozaj dobrý fínsky horor, ale film “Painajainen merellä” by som odporučil aspoň pre jeho absolútnu komickú hodnotu.
