#309 Standard Society // Industrial Avant-garde // f/error a ZUZ // 9.6.2026

1. Kto si, čo robíš a čo ťa najviac zaujíma práve v týchto dňoch?

Robím IT a prepadám sa do predstáv. Zaujíma ma kde zarobiť lóve na život. Survival…survival režim proste. Very basics. Basic stuff.

Som aj Košičanka, zakladateľka, pokračovateľka, kultúrna manažérka, kamarátka, matka, dcéra, milenka a v kontexte Standard Society som sestra a aktívna súčasť živej akcie.

V ostatnom čase ma zaujímajú stratégie udržateľnosti, v kultúre, vo vzťahoch, v spoločnosti. Rozmýšľam či súčasný rozvrat kultúrnej scény spôsobený nominantstvom SNS na ministerstve kultúry prinesie v dlhodobom horizonte aj niečo dobré, alebo len zle vyhodnocujem silu spájania, solidarity a chuti nezvzdať sa, ktorú okolo seba pozorujem.

To čo komentujeme a tú dystopiu, ktorú z toho cítiť, my ju cítime v aktuálnej situácii a nemá to priamo s covidom nič spoločné.

Ja vykrikujem, prinášam performatívnu časť a časť textov. A poriadok, ja prinášam poriadok. A viem kdekoľvek vyšplhať, keď treba.

f/error: Sme amatérská kapela, to si treba uvedomiť.

ZUZ: Sme intuitívna kapela.

f/error: A nie sme ani kapela. Aj pri tomto rozhovore sme vyslovení amatéri.

ZUZ: Ale robíme to so srdiečkom.

f/error: Každý sme profesionál vo svojom odbore.

ZUZ: Ale hudba to nie je. To treba povedať.

f/error: Ale zase spolu dobre vychádzame.

Dnes sme tu my a predtým to bol niekto iný. A potom to zase bude niekto iný.

Spája nás surrealizmus a dokumentaristika.

Keď treba zrobiť bordel, my prídeme. Neni problém. Máme radi miesta, kde je kľud. A ulice miest tiež, street, konfrontácia.

f/error: Aj agropriestor….polia….

ZUZ: To nevieme. Napríklad ja som sama seba prekvapila naposledy na Hradbách Samoty. V rámci akcie pracujem s červenou stuhou, ktorú mám v ústach, v jednom momente mi zapadla do krku a začala som sa dusiť.

f/error: Nie, to vôbec nebolo našim zámerom a nič sme neporušili.

f/error: Zakazané látky majú vplyv plošný a celospoločenský. Majú schopnosť odjebať človeka a to zasádne. Najmä alkohol, tvrdé drogy, prášky. Ktoré netolerujeme. Nefetujeme. Nie sme feťáci, sme normálni Slováci. Irie.

ZUZ: Kreatívne procesy neštartujeme pomocou zakázaných látok.

No dúfajme, že bude združené.

f/error: Boli trošku vybetónovanejšie už v roku 2014 a v ďalších rokoch.

f/error: Biedne. My v sa  cítime byť súčasťou všetkých, ale v podstate my tu nemáme až taký veľký kontakt, tu na na východe, s realitou.

ZUZ: Otázne je, či tie scény to cítia, že my sme ich súčasťou.

18. Si tvorcom appky Tribe Circle, ktorú si vytvoril v rámci svojho startupu a ktorá má pomáhať umeleckým komunitám. Vieš o nej povedať niečo viac?

f/error: Ja už toto slovo nebirujem - startup. Takže teraz to ideme vyskúšať v novom komunitnom keramickom ateliéri v Košiciach a ták ... Tribe Circle!

A o to chodži. Koho to zaujíma, nech sa mi ozve.

19. Čo počúvate, pozeráte a čítate v týchto dňoch?

f/error: Veľmi som si obľúbil albumy Sci-fi Sky od Lebanon Hannover a Black Medium Current od Dodheimsgard. Minule som bol kuknúť 1914 v Kole a bol to určite jeden z najlepších black metalových koncertov ever. Medzi moje all-time favorites určite patrí Empusae a Ah Cama-Sotz. Z darkwave sa u mňa chytili Her Absence Fill The World. Z rhythmic noisu napr. Mono No Aware, Synapscape. Aktívne sledujem labely Hands a Ant-Zen.

f/error: Jasné, so Šunkym - Amitabha 7 (ambient), ale aj s Never Sol, s Palim z predajne vinylov La:bell z Košíc. To by bolo dobre. Aj s výtvarníkom Zbyňkom Prokopom, známeho napr. z Transmusic comp. A s Mircom, čo má skúšobne na Rampovej a potom ešte s Peťom Radkoffom, umeleckým riaditeľom Tabačky Kulturfabrik a s Vajglom z Collossea. To sú dva kľúčové kluby v Košiciach. Ešte by som si rád prečítal rozhovor s kapelou Povetrie (folk, indie) a Extropia (doom metal).

ZUZ: SELENoLAr

21. Motto alebo odkaz na záver.

ZUZ: Choďte voliť a nebuďte kokoti.

1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?

f/error: I'm f/error, a Slovak from Košice. I'm trying to survive and I'm always doing something, including working. I work in IT and disappear into my own imagination. I'm interested in figuring out how to make enough money to live. Survival... just survival mode. Very basics. Basic stuff.

ZUZ: I'm many things, but I'm always part of something. I am what I devote myself to, and that changes, but it's always somehow connected to people. For simplicity's sake, I say I'm a cultural activist. That's probably the most accurate description – activity and culture.

I'm also a woman from Košice, a founder, a successor, a cultural manager, a friend, a mother, a daughter, a lover, and, in the context of Standard Society, a sister and an active part of a living action.

Lately, I've been interested in strategies of sustainability – in culture, in relationships, and in society. I've been wondering whether the current collapse of the cultural scene caused by the SNS nominees at the Ministry of Culture will bring anything positive in the long run, or whether I'm simply overestimating the power of solidarity, togetherness, and the unwillingness to give up that I observe around me.

2. Standard Society emerged as an early COVID-era project that seemed driven by a strong need to comment on what was happening in the world through an unconventional audio-visual language. Was the dystopia of 2020 the main inspiration behind the project, or was there something else?

f/error: No, not at all. Absolutely not.

ZUZ: Standard Society wasn't born as an early COVID project. Standard Society has been around much longer than that. And if we're talking about the two of us collaborating on this project as siblings, that also has nothing to do with the dystopia of 2020. Not at all. What we comment on – the dystopia people may sense in our work – is something we feel in the current situation. It has nothing directly to do with COVID. It's connected to the present state of society.

f/error: It's a permanent condition, escalating all the time. Nothing changes in this fundamental life situation.

3. Standard Society features f/error and Zuzana. What roles do you play, and how do you complement each other creatively? Is sibling energy a driving force behind progress, or also a source of destruction?

f/error: I bang on metal sheets and play electronics. There's a strong emphasis on metal, chains. We also have a flag waving in the wind. There's often bryndza, žinčica, and Baracz pálenka too.

ZUZ: The roles are clear. Fero writes the music and a large part of the lyrics. I do the shouting, bring the performative aspect, and contribute some of the texts. And order – I bring order. I can also climb just about anywhere if needed.

f/error: We're an amateur band. That's important to realise.

ZUZ: We're an intuitive band.

f/error: And we're not even really a band. Even doing this interview, we're complete amateurs.

ZUZ: But we do it with our hearts.

f/error: Each of us is a professional in our own field.

ZUZ: But music isn't that field. That should be said.

f/error: Still, we get along well. Also with the other members of Standard Society, such as co-founder Reznor, who is also part of the FARA project and the creator of our visual identity.

4. Besides the two of you, who else is part of Standard Society and what do they bring to the project?

f/error: They're basically all friends. You can check it out on YouTube.

ZUZ: Standard Society is an organic project. Today it's us, before it was someone else, and later it will be someone else again. People come and go, but Fero remains. So I guess Fero is the magnet. Everyone who appears brings something of their own, and in that moment they become important.

f/error: I created it for friends. It's a gathering of friends. What connects us is surrealism and documentary.

ZUZ: We'd also like to mention our family, because they contribute enormously to the project. If it weren't for our family, we wouldn't even be who we are. As children, we always had support at home, even for our wild ideas and mischief. The same applies now to our partners – Katka and Peter. They're both incredibly supportive, creative, and patient people. Thanks to their approach, many of our projects can exist, and we're both grateful for that.

f/error: No love, no projects.

5. Standard Society is known for choosing unusual locations for its performances. How do you choose them, and what kind of genius loci appeals to you?

f/error: The genius loci that appeals to us is wherever we're invited. We'll play anywhere. We even have our own 6kW sound system. We've got lights, lasers, and a smoke machine. If someone needs chaos, we'll show up. No problem. We like places where there's peace and quiet. We also like city streets – the street, confrontation.

ZUZ: We like public spaces and industrial spaces. In general, we enjoy places that weren't meant for whatever it is we're about to do there.

f/error: Agricultural spaces too... fields... sheds... wine cellars...

ZUZ: Basically, we'll make use of wherever we happen to be. But I don't think the space itself is as important as the people in it. That's what matters to us. Whatever the place may be, we want people to be there with us.

f/error: Exactly.

6. To what extent are your audiovisual performances rehearsed, and how much room do you allow yourselves for improvisation? When was the last time someone in the band was surprised by another member's spontaneous action – and what happened?

f/error: Six – seven – so for me that works out to roughly 33% improvisation and 67% rehearsal.

ZUZ: I absolutely love improvisation, but at the same time I feel a certain sense of responsibility when I'm there with a partner who, I think, doesn't really improvise. :) I try to stick to what's supposed to happen. But it's obvious that both of us can go off on a tangent. We actually enjoy it when something presents itself during the concert.

f/error: What do you mean? Like pálenka?

ZUZ: Yes, when someone offers us pálenka, or when there's an interesting architectural oddity that can be incorporated into the performance, or some reaction from the audience. We listen to and observe each other throughout the whole performance. It's always a slightly different process – it's alive.

f/error: We never know how it's going to end. We really don't. But so far, it's always turned out well. We're still here.

ZUZ: We never know. The last time I surprised even myself was at Hradby Samoty. As part of the performance, I work with a red ribbon that I keep in my mouth. At one point it slipped down my throat and I started choking.

So there I was, during the song, trying to figure out how to deal with it without the audience noticing that I was choking, without Fero panicking, and without actually suffocating. I surprised myself by managing it and by the fact that nobody noticed anything – except the photographer. :)

7. Standard Society has released one live album, Fontanela, recorded at Tabačka in Košice, which references the Qatsi trilogy. How did the trilogy influence this live release, and how was it created?

f/error: Definitely. The entire Qatsi trilogy, as well as films like Baraka, Samsara, and so on. There are many visual documentaries of different kinds, and they clearly inspired us. But we work intuitively, combining documentary footage in a way that makes the final result feel surreal, and we improvise a lot.

ZUZ: Fontanela, authored by f/error and Michal Dankulinec, has a cathartic effect on listeners and viewers, much like the aforementioned trilogy. The difference is that they worked with whatever video material was available, although I think that, given the opportunity, they would have preferred to shoot their own footage.

f/error: There actually is some original footage in there, just not much of it. With video art, we have the opportunity to be flexible and adapt the palette of images to the place where we're performing. That's how I'd like to approach it in the future – more preparation time and a site-specific result.

8. You recently released the video for "Reťaze" ("Chains"), which gave me vertigo by proxy. Was the goal of the video to induce heart attacks in people who are afraid of heights? How many health and safety regulations did you break while filming it?

f/error: No, that wasn't our intention at all, and we didn't break anything. Everything was in order – health and safety regulations were observed, there was a safety officer. Everything was fine, everything compliant.

ZUZ: Our intention was to make use of a fleeting moment in a deconstructed piece of architecture and connect it with lyrics reacting to a society that's falling apart. It was an insistent, compulsive vision, and I'm grateful that we managed to bring it to life together with Peter Radkoff and Ján Varchola.

You walk through Hlavná Street every day and watch its image change. You see the building at the end of it still standing, yet simultaneously ceasing to be a building. Its transformation is absurd, beautiful, magical, and sad all at once.

f/error: By the way, it used to be the tax office.

9. Standard Society's lyrics evoke images of dystopian urban architecture combined with masses of people in which individuality disappears – something darker in the vein of "Everyone write with a blue pen" or "diversity is destruction." How far off am I?

f/error: You're not off at all. You're right.

ZUZ: Unlike the phrase "Everyone write with a blue pen," for me that mass, that crowd, isn't necessarily something negative. It also contains a certain poetry. A mass isn't an abstraction – it's made up of individuals and their stories.

That's how Standard Society's lyrics work as well. They're not about the crowd itself, but about what each person within that crowd is dealing with individually. So yes, we see the dystopia, but we don't look at it from the outside – we're inside it, each in our own way, trying to enjoy the ride.

10. Is the future one giant programmed corporation, Big Brother, and cosy reinforced-concrete dwellings, or will we one day again be able to casually throw our watches into the dust like Peter Fonda and set off on an easy ride wherever we please?

f/error: Sure. The Wolf Forest Protection Movement (VLK) is already working on it.

ZUZ: A carefree ride through a dystopian landscape is also possible.

11. Are we living in a standard society? What defines our "standard"?

ZUZ: Now that's a question!

f/error: Our standards are defined by laws. Laws differ. There are written laws and unwritten laws.

ZUZ: And all of them get broken – both the written and the unwritten ones.

f/error: So, a standard society... that's the dystopia, isn't it?

12. What about illegal substances and their influence on the creative processes of the morning shift workers?

f/error: Illegal substances have a broad, society-wide impact. Which means they also affect our working processes. They have the ability to seriously fuck people up. Especially alcohol, hard drugs, pills – those we don't tolerate. We don't do drugs. We're not junkies, we're normal Slovaks. Irie.

ZUZ: We don't kick-start our creative processes with illegal substances.

13. Standard Society emerged from the fertile underground of Košice's Tabačka. What kind of subculture creates this environment, and what other artistic or activist projects are part of it?

f/error: I have to answer this like a programmer. The underground in Košice is, by its nature, connected in a very broad way, and it's made up of the people who live here. Whether in Tabačka or outside it. I'd say the Košice underground is rich, but it's not formally united in any way. Hopefully one day it will be. Then this question could be answered more directly.

ZUZ: I remember when it was even less connected than it is now. I think the time of it being an "underground" has passed. In the meantime, it has grown into a scene that is much more interconnected than in many other cities.

There are plenty of talented people in Košice – creative people who devote love and attention to what they do. You should come and see for yourself.

f/error: Košice is the metropolis of the East. A lot of people live here, and a lot of people make up this underground. Everybody's doing something. You should come and check it out. Just look at how many interviews with Košice bands have already appeared on JDØS...

14. Have Košice always been a strong cultural hub, even in the underground? Did anything change after 2013, when the city became the European Capital of Culture?

f/error: They became a bit more concreted-over around 2014 and in the years that followed.

ZUZ: Things didn't change in 2013 itself. The changes came later, as a consequence of 2013. Today, it's been measurably proven that the European Capital of Culture project had a positive impact on the city and on the people living here. If someone had told me that in 2013, I wouldn't have believed them. Especially for the local creative scene, it was a difficult period.

15. How are Košice connected to other cities in terms of subcultures and non-mainstream activities? Do you feel part of a Slovak, European, global, or some other scene – or is it something entirely different?

f/error: Poorly. We feel like we're part of all of them, but in reality, out here in the East, we don't have that much contact with reality.

ZUZ: The question is whether those scenes feel that we're part of them.

16. Standard Society and related bands are part of the so-called Kinderzimmer. What exactly is that?

f/error: Die Unordnung im Kinderzimmer – that's the central point of our information zone.

ZUZ: It used to be a sign hanging in Fero's childhood bedroom.

17. f/error, I know that besides everything else, you're also a programmer. How do you balance artistic, uncontrolled punk with highly organised technical work? Do you have some sort of mental "switch" that lets you move between these different modes, or do you live these worlds in parallel?

f/error: I don't manage... barely... and the question was badly phrased anyway. But you can answer it.

ZUZ: But the question is for you.

f/error: Let's move on.

18. You're the creator of the Tribe Circle app, which you developed as part of your startup and which is intended to help artistic communities. Can you tell us more about it?

f/error: I've stopped using that word – startup. It's not some startup. We just install it like reinforcing bars into concrete, or weld it onto wooden beams with rivets.

But to the point. It's meant to help not only artistic communities but all kinds of communities and groups. Or tribes.

It actually came out of our own needs – managing two spaces in the underground of TBČK: the Fusion Music Studio and the workshop for sound experimentation, plus another room – the metal rehearsal space, formerly Musiclab – where you can also throw a mini party or concert. All sorts of people have played there, including several names from the JDØS register.

And that's another thing I'd like to mention: we, or anyone from the Orgon Studio Community, can organise an ad hoc concert or mini party there. That's why Tribe Circle came into being – for our own needs.

In the end, it doesn't really matter what is being shared, because the structure of a tribe is always the same – human and natural. That's why it's called Tribe Circle.

So now we're going to try it out in a new community ceramics studio in Košice and... Tribe Circle!

ZUZ: I've observed this process from the very beginning. Fero created a tool because he had a genuine need for it – a tool that, at first, helped him solve real-life situations.

He kept testing it, and gradually it became clear that it had the potential to evolve further and help other people trying to create and sustain living communities that share spaces and resources.

I think his approach as a creator is similar to the way he makes music. On one hand, there's an open musical project built around friendship and family; on the other, there's an application – a tool that is equally open, flexible, and functional, created for the purpose of sharing and, ideally, joy.

I don't think the "switch" you mentioned exists. If it did, many of the things we've been talking about here simply wouldn't exist in the form they do.

f/error: You just have to stick to your own path. No idols – every community has its own rules. That's what it's all about. Anyone interested should get in touch with me.

19. What are you listening to, watching, and reading these days?

f/error: I've really grown fond of Sci-Fi Sky by Lebanon Hanover and Black Medium Current by Dødheimsgard. I recently went to see 1914 at Kolo, and it was definitely one of the best black metal concerts ever.

Among my all-time favourites are Empusae and Ah Cama-Sotz. For fans of The Young Gods, I'd recommend the solo album White Planet by samplerist Al Comet. I've also really gotten into Frett, whom I saw at Hradby Samoty in A4. I love Job Karma. In terms of darkwave, Her Absence Fill the World has really clicked with me.

For motivational music, I listen to Poupée Fabrikk, but also Oldschool Union. One thing I discovered recently is The Age of Ephemerality by Bruit – a short album, but in my opinion a masterpiece. For rhythmic noise, Mono No Aware and Synapscape. I actively follow the Hands and Ant-Zen labels.

As for documentaries, I can recommend Vivant by Yann Arthus-Bertrand – probably the most beautiful documentary about biodiversity I've ever seen. You definitely shouldn't miss Manufactured Landscapes, an art documentary about how humans reshape the landscape, or Intercepted, where intercepted communications of Russian soldiers play over artistic footage from Ukrainian territory. Strong stomachs only.

ZUZ: I'm reading Kolotočárka, written by Jana Wernerová, my former colleague from the theatre, and it's great – both the author and the book. I'm also planning to attend the premiere of Mastný muž 2.0 – a dystopian theatrical collage about a country where literature once again becomes a suspicious activity and culture an object of bureaucratic scrutiny.

And seriously, I'm also reading the Recovery and Resilience Plan for Culture (POOK), which I'd recommend to everyone – at least the introduction. It's highly motivating if you're struggling with apathy.

20. Is there anyone you'd like to read an interview with on JDØS?

f/error: Sure. Šunky from Amitabha 7 (ambient), Never Sol, Pali from the La record shop in Košice. That would be great. Also visual artist Zbyněk Prokop, known for things like the Transmusic compilations. Then Mirco, who runs the rehearsal spaces on Rampová Street, and Peter Radkoff, artistic director of Tabačka Kulturfabrik, as well as Vajgl from Collosseum. Those are two key clubs in Košice.

I'd also love to read interviews with the bands Povetrie (folk, indie) and Extropia (doom metal).

ZUZ: SELENoLAr.

21. A motto or final message.

ZUZ: Go vote, and don't be assholes.

f/error: It's enough if you're not assholes. Voting is nice to have, but first and foremost, don't be assholes.

And come check out Standard Society's performance at A4 on June 19th at KRAA! #10: A Festival of Truly Contemporary Music.

#300 KIFOTH // Electro-Industrial // Key Head // 18.2.2026

/// English version below ///

1. Kto si, čo práve robíš a čo ťa najviac zaujíma v týchto dňoch?

2. V novembri ste na domácom labeli Aliens Production vydali novinku „Lost Territory“. Legendárna domáca kapela a legendárny domáci label — obe desaťročia aktívne v rovnakom žánri — napriek tomu ide o prvú spoluprácu.

Všetko to boli zvučné vydavateľstvá s dobrou distribúciou a dosahom.

Out Of Line robil aj výrazné promo — zorganizoval nám turné v Nemecku a Holandsku s Hocico, dvakrát nás umiestnil na Wave Gothic Treffen, vydal album Fundamentum Divisions aj live kompiláciu Tierra Eléctrica.

Neskôr sme sa rozišli, keďže v Nemecku sa viac promoval aggrotech a my sme mali viac poslucháčov v USA. Prišli ponuky z Ameriky a odvtedy sme si vyberali skôr podľa veľkosti trhu a distribúcie.

Pred každým albumom sme mali viac ponúk — napriek záujmu EAR sme Accebity Torrent a Violence Corporation vydali s Vendetta Music. Potom sme mali dlhšiu pauzu a oslovil nás EK Product, ktorého flexibilita a rýchlosť sa nám páčila — predchádzajúcim labelom trvalo aj pol roka dostať materiál do tlače, EK to zvládol za tri mesiace.

Teraz sme mali pripravený materiál a opäť tri ponuky.

3. Lost Territory obsahuje štyri nové tracky a deväť prerábok starších skladieb od domácich aj zahraničných dark elektro kapiel. Ako vznikol tento koncept?

V posledných rokoch som mal nabitý program — robil som projekty Eclipsed a intenzívne som spolupracoval s českou Vanessou ako songwriter, koproducent a koncertný člen (2019–2025).

Prepojiť sampler, MIDI sekvencér, bicí modul a klávesy si vyžadovalo know-how. U nás to mali ako prví správne zapojené depešáci Monte Rosa, v Čechách Oceán.

Za pionierov považujem The Dark — ich demo Lies for the Best Family z roku 1991 bolo celé spravené na Roland D-20. Dostalo nás to, ale nemali sme ani know-how ani peniaze — mali sme 15 rokov. Založili sme kapelu Bismarck a nahrali demo na kazetu — živé nahrávanie cez magnetofón, kláves z Rakúska, Casio, Atari 800 XL bicie, Jolana s vlastným boosterom a železnou tyčou.

Paralelne vychádzali Gun Dreams či Vanessa a my sme začali používať Amigu 500 na sampling.

Projekty vznikali a mizli, niektoré ostali. The Dark už nie je aktívny, ale občas vystúpi — naposledy 2019, kde som Ďura supportoval. Sme v kontakte — aj cez moje hranie s Vanessou (2023–2025).

Ďalšími stálicami sú ľudia okolo Terminal State, Disharmony či Last Influence of Brain — máme medzi sebou prepojenia a projekty. Všetci sme približne rovnaká generácia — projekty vznikali 1989–1993 ako reakcia na vlnu EBM a electro-industrialu.

Hudobné vplyvy: Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails — ale aj temnejšia alternatíva ako The Cure.

Vizuálne sme boli silne ovplyvnení dystopickým sci-fi — horory, filmové sample, čierna estetika. Obrovský vplyv mal HR Giger — viditeľný napríklad na obale The Dark.

12. Ak si dobre pamätám, v druhej polovici 90. rokov a na prelome tisícročí bývali spoločné goth a dark industrial akcie, napríklad fetish party v Bratislave. Ako dlho trvalo prepojenie elektro a goth scény a v čom mali k sebe blízko?

Festivaly sme si organizovali sami s kamarátmi a nadšencami — najmä v Bratislave, Trnave a Malackách.

Z goth scény boli hlavnými reprezentantmi Last Days of Jesus a Ľahká múza.

Nazývali sme to „čierna komunita“ — fanúšikovia gothu a elektroniky mali k sebe vždy blízko. Obdobie približne 1995–2005 bolo podľa mňa charakteristické tým, že väčšina akcií mala takéto spoločné zloženie. Spomienok je veľa — boli to skutočne subkultúrne podujatia v podzemných kluboch: v Bratislave Účko a Duna, v Trnave Káčko, v Malackách Archa či kulturák.

.

Vychádzal svetoznámy fanzin Crewzine, robili sme štýlové diskotéky v Bratislave (Dúbravka) a Trnave, koncertovali The Dark, neskôr Morbid Fancy a KIFOTH.

Medzi aktívne projekty patrili KIFOTH, Terminal State, Ľahká múza, Abuse, Morbid Fancy, Cyborg, Anima Mundi či Einleitungszeit. Label Front CD neskôr vydal KIFOTH aj Neural Paralytic.

Zlatý vek žánru v Európe nastal až po roku 2000 — vznikalo veľa nových kapiel a festivaly boli najplnšie. Wave-Gotik-Treffen, goth/darkwave festival založený v roku 1992, priviedol do roku 1999 väčšinu priekopníkov na svoje pódiá a následne prišla revival vlna trvajúca približne do roku 2010 — kapely výrazne ovplyvnené zakladateľmi žánru. V tom období na festivale opakovane vystúpili aj KIFOTH a Last Days of Jesus. Vrchol návštevnosti WGT bol okolo rokov 2009–2012, no dodnes ide o najväčšie stretnutie komunity.

Trafil si 😊 Hocico boli naši kolegovia z labelu Out of Line a absolvovali sme s nimi európske turné — časť Nemecka a Holandska — ako putovný minifestival. Každý večer hrali tri kapely: KIFOTH, Culture Kultur a Hocico. Každý priniesol niečo trochu iné, ale spolu to fungovalo skvele — kluby boli plné a ľudia sa bavili.

Pre KIFOTH to bolo turné Spectrebreakers, na bicích nás podporoval Solo z Last Influence of Brain — 10 koncertov za 12 dní. S Erikom a Óscarom z Hocico sme tvorili silnú partiu — celé turné sme strávili v nightlineri, teda autobuse používanom na dlhé tour.

Z turné vzniklo live CD Tierra Electrica.

A Amduscia?

Len málo kapiel hrá celý život to isté s rovnakým setupom.

17. Kam vo svete sa dostal KIFOTH v rámci koncertov, spolupráce s labelmi a kapelami? Čo boli top highlighty vašej kariéry?

Labely aj festivaly (vrátane Wave-Gotik-Treffen) som už spomenul. Možno som nespomenul koncerty, kde sme si splnili sny — hrali sme pred Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps, Skinny Puppy či Combichrist a na festivaloch spolu s Leather Strip, Hocico, Dive, Haujobb, Vomito Negro, Velvet Acid Christ, Placebo Effect, Suicide Commando, Mortiis, Absurd Minds, In Strict Confidence, Atari Teenage Riot a mnohými ďalšími idolmi.

Ako jeden z prvých fanúšikov The Dark som s nimi nakoniec vystúpil ako koncertný hráč, keď sme predskakovali Front 242 — dokonca si požičali moje klávesy. Bol som fanúšikom Vanessy a napokon som sa stal jej členom — napísal som väčšinu skladieb na CD Ghost Army a album produkoval. Odohrali sme tri turné — najúspešnejšie v ich histórii z hľadiska návštevnosti — viac než 40 koncertov (2019–2025).

Zahral som si aj s muzikantmi, ktorí boli mojimi ikonami: Daniel Rodný, Mojmír Papalescu, Jarda Stuchlý, Tuzex, Ďuro z The Dark či Boris Brna. Hosťoval som na pódiu so Samhain a Last Influence of Brain, produkujem a hrám s projektom Eclipsed.

A skoro každý má nejaký príbeh.

Koncert skončil v sobotu okolo polnoci a polícia nás prišla priamo do klubu zadržať.

Súčasťou jednej performance bolo rozbíjanie stien a podlahy zbíjačkou.

A z tých vyše 200 koncertov by som vedel porozprávať minimálne ďalších 50 príbehov.

Knihy — som čistokrvný Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams.

Teraz to prehliadam a vidím veľa super materiálu. Dúfam, že nevyberiem niekoho, koho už máte — ale mohli by ste vyspovedať Waldemara, organizátora festivalu Hradby Samoty. Prebrať históriu, kam to smeruje a aj nejaký background.

Chcel by som sa narodiť do niečoho lepšieho 🙂

1. Who are you, what are you doing these days, and what’s capturing your attention right now?

Hi — I’ve been doing quite a lot of remixes lately. I already completed one in January for The Witch Say No, a Russian project I really like for its melodies and vocal delivery. This month a label also asked us to contribute a cover for a Skinny Puppy tribute CD coming out in the summer.

Right now I’m finishing six tracks for a remix album titled Artificial Territory, featuring reworks of songs from our latest record. So I’m genuinely busy — it’s hard to find time for anything else. Besides that, our politics have started to seriously annoy me :-D

2. In November you released “Lost Territory” on the Slovak label Aliens Production. A legendary local band and a legendary local label — both active in the same genre for decades — yet this is your first collaboration. How did it happen and why only now?

Yes, we’ve known each other since around 1993 and performed together several times with Disharmony. The opportunity only came now because we were always booked by other labels.

Right after our first demo tape, German label VUZ Records — which released Wumpscut — contacted us, and we signed with them before we were even eighteen for the album Ebola (1995). The label later went bankrupt and only resumed activity after 2012.

In the meantime, Front CD from Piešťany released our limited Spectaclebreakers (1999) and sold the rights to Out Of Line, who reissued it and licensed US rights to Interbeat Records. These were strong labels with solid distribution.

Out Of Line also promoted us heavily — organizing tours in Germany and the Netherlands with Hocico, placing us twice at Wave Gothic Treffen, releasing Fundamentum Divisions, and issuing the live compilation Tierra Eléctrica.

Later we parted ways because aggrotech was becoming dominant in Germany while we had a stronger US audience. From then on we chose labels based on market size and distribution reach.

Eventually we released Accebity Torrent and Violence Corporation with Vendetta Music. After a longer hiatus, EK Product approached us — their flexibility and speed impressed us, releasing material within three months.

This time we had three offers again. We skipped the US option, hoping for live support, and another EU label wasn’t fully rooted in the genre. Ryba maintains a high standard for Slovak electronic music and we had positive collaboration before, so we agreed over a beer.

Aliens Production proved highly professional — from artwork and mastering to promotion and distribution. I’m glad we did it.

3. Lost Territory features four new tracks and nine reworks of older songs by domestic and international dark electro bands. How did this concept come together?

In recent years I’ve been extremely busy — working on Eclipsed projects and collaborating intensively with Czech band Vanessa as songwriter, co-producer, and live member from 2019 to 2025.

We had several demo songs for KIFOTH but they didn’t form a coherent concept, so we initially planned an EP. While preparing digital reissues of our albums in 2025, I rediscovered remix material and had also been producing many remixes recently.

I reached out to bands I’d worked with — and interest exceeded expectations. More than ten bands participated, so not everything fit onto one CD. I’m glad they did excellent work and that we could promote them through KIFOTH.

4. How would you characterize the themes of the four new KIFOTH tracks in relation to global and local events of the past few years?

KIFOTH has always tried to highlight current issues and what may follow from them, encouraging listeners to reflect on how they can influence the future. Each track carries a message — many are directly referenced in the lyrics — but the overarching theme is sustainability.

It’s perhaps most explicit in Words to Fear. We should be thinking about what we leave behind for future generations. Many people simply don’t care. There’s also Medical Care, which addresses the present generation — our healthcare system here is already close to collapse.

5. Is humanity’s accelerating drift toward dystopia and the replacement of people by AI the fulfilment of EBM’s predictions? Are we living in the “golden age” imagined by dark industrial bands?

Replacing people with AI wouldn’t be a good solution, but I believe it should be used where objectivity is needed. AI is like fire — a good servant but a bad master if things get out of hand.

I can imagine it assisting in judicial processes or acting as an aid in sports officiating — gathering facts rather than making final decisions. Corruption is everywhere, and greed is a natural human trait visible in global events.

Personally, I’d prefer a future closer to Star Trek, but voters often choose a dystopian path believing naïve opportunists will end up on top. The global pandemic already had a dystopian atmosphere — we experienced that five years ago. So yes, we may well be rushing toward a sci-fi EBM golden age :-D

6. Lost Territory features slow- to mid-tempo EBM created by Key Head, Mir Colon, and Blažena. How do you complement each other creatively, and what defines each of you musically?

I handle the overall musical concept — composition and sound design. Mir Colon is responsible for lyrics and vocals. Blažena supports mainly in live performances, and all three of us contribute collaboratively to production.

He was more involved this time — arranging drum parts — and I believe he’ll play an even larger role on the next album. We produce everything ourselves rather than using an external producer. Everyone contributes ideas; the result is a compromise rather than consensus — and each input leaves its mark on the final outcome.

7. What gear did you use while composing the new album? Do you rely on analog gear, original samples, or specific machines/software?

It’s a real mixture. We used more original sampling in the past, but now sample libraries are so extensive that recording new material isn’t always necessary. When we sample, it’s often phrases from films or documentaries — like in Medical Care or Words to Fear.

Metal hits and loops come from sample libraries, but bass, strings, and synths are about 95% hardware-based. I’ve built a large synth collection over the years. I rarely create sounds entirely from scratch — I modify factory presets and layer them, sometimes with VSTs, to add grit.

For example, Cowardice opens with textures from Wavestation EX and Yamaha CS1X, with analog sounds from MS-20 and Prophet Rev2. Drums are based on an Alesis SR-16 layered with metallic/noise samples from Kontakt. Medical Care blends VST with hardware — Moog Sub37 bass, Nord Lead 2 electronics, V-Synth strings, and Arturia DrumBrute hi-hats.

8. How do you create beats and rhythm — how do you approach BPM and sound design?

Rhythms emerge spontaneously once a core riff appears. I don’t follow a traditional writing process — I’m driven by sound. Sometimes it starts with a bass sequence, sometimes with an improvised rhythmic loop or sample that becomes the foundation for development.

BPM could be approached more analytically, since it shapes atmosphere, but often the tempo naturally fits the sample or loop, and I don’t overthink it afterward.

9. If the riff is the structural building block of a song in guitar music, what plays that role in electronic music?

I often just improvise — twisting knobs and coming up with melodies, twists, and arpeggios, recording them straight into the DAW. When I listen back to those sessions, I find interesting moments. It’s not a finished piece — it just creates an atmosphere. I edit it down and turn it into a loop that motivates me further, so it becomes something like a guitar riff — just played on a synth.

Creating a distinctive riff is important so the track doesn’t sound generic. Only afterwards do I deal with melody, and that’s where the root note reveals itself. I’m always inspired by sound rather than melody — melody comes later.

10. How, when, and where did the dark electro scene emerge in Slovakia — who were the key actors, and what role did KIFOTH and its members play?

I can’t give a definitive answer, but from my perspective we were somewhere near the beginning in Slovakia. I was fascinated by electronics early on — I listened to Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode around 1986, when electronic influences started spreading through illegal recordings during communism.

The first EBM track I heard was Front 242’s Headhunter in 1988, followed by Ministry’s Twitch and Skinny Puppy’s Rabies in 1989. Earlier recordings may have reached us a year or two before that, when the style was still forming.

Electronic music was completely different from rock, punk, or metal. Owning a guitar was one thing — owning a synthesizer another. You could play on a cheap guitar, but synths cost the equivalent of a yearly salary. The style developed in the West — there was nobody to learn from.

The first concert I remember was Front Line Assembly in Prague, 1991. Connecting samplers, MIDI sequencers, drum modules, and keyboards required real know-how. Monte Rosa in Slovakia and Oceán in Czechia were early adopters.

The pioneers here were The Dark — their demo Lies for the Best Family (1991) was made entirely on a Roland D-20. It blew us away, but we lacked money and knowledge — we were 15. My first keyboard was a Casio SA-1. We formed Bismarck and recorded a cassette demo live — Austrian keyboard, Casio, Atari drum programming, Jolana guitar with homemade booster, metal rod, radio samples triggered live 🙂

By 1993 The Dark released Clear — Roland W-30 loaded with samples — top tier locally. Alongside Gun Dreams and Vanessa we started sampling on an Amiga 500. I think we were the second or third attempt at this style in Slovakia — together with Morbid Fancy and Einleingunszeit — and we shared festival stages.

11. Which generation shaped the Slovak dark electro scene — people raised in the 80s or later?

We’re a long-connected community. Some projects faded, some remained. The Dark aren’t active but appear occasionally — last in 2019, where I supported Ďuro. We stay in contact — also through my work with Vanessa (2023–2025).

Other constants include Terminal State, Disharmony, Last Influence of Brain — many shared collaborations. We’re largely the same generation — projects formed between 1989–1993 as a response to the EBM/electro-industrial wave.

Musical influences: Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails — plus darker alternative like The Cure.

Visually we were influenced by dystopian sci-fi — horror aesthetics, film samples, black stage imagery. HR Giger was hugely influential — visible for example on The Dark artwork. Their projected slides fascinated me so much I “borrowed” them after a concert 🙂

12. If I remember correctly, in the late 90s and around the turn of the millennium there were joint goth and dark industrial events — for example fetish parties in Bratislava. How long did the connection between electro and goth scenes last, and what brought them close together? Did KIFOTH play such events — and what memories do you have of them?

Exactly as you mention — those were years when we truly enjoyed our alternative scene. We organized festivals ourselves with friends and enthusiasts — mainly in Bratislava, Trnava, and Malacky.

Key representatives of the Slovak goth scene were Last Days of Jesus and Ľahká múza. But we also invited foreign bands — usually projects from Czechia — and for example the American project JIHAD played its very first show ever in Trnava. It still exists today, and James still visits us and loves Slovakia.

We called it the “black community” — goth and electronic fans were always close. Roughly 1995–2005 most events shared that lineup. Many memories — truly subcultural underground venues: Účko and Duna in Bratislava, Káčko in Trnava, Archa and the cultural hall in Malacky.

13. What were the centers of dark electro activity in Slovakia (bands, labels, events), and how long did the genre’s golden age last locally and internationally?

The golden age — when shows were most frequent — was around 1995–2010. It started as a fan-driven community. The internationally known fanzine Crewzine was published, themed club nights were organized in Bratislava and Trnava, and concerts by The Dark, later Morbid Fancy and KIFOTH took place.

After 1995 more projects emerged and mini-festivals appeared. Ryby launched Alien Productions — initially cassette compilations. Active projects included KIFOTH, Terminal State, Ľahká múza, Abuse, Morbid Fancy, Cyborg, Anima Mundi, and Einleitungszeit. Label Front CD later released KIFOTH and Neural Paralytic.

Europe’s golden age came after 2000 — many new bands and packed festivals. Wave-Gotik-Treffen, founded in 1992, hosted most pioneers by 1999, followed by a revival wave lasting until about 2010. KIFOTH and Last Days of Jesus appeared there repeatedly. Attendance peaked around 2009–2012, though it remains the largest gathering today.

14. At the beginning of the millennium I discovered Mexican EBM bands like Cenobita, Hocico, and Amduscia thanks to Ryby. Did KIFOTH interact with them, and what made them distinctive or important to the genre?

Good catch 😊 Hocico were our label mates at Out of Line and we toured Europe with them — Germany and the Netherlands — as a traveling mini-festival. Each night featured KIFOTH, Culture Kultur, and Hocico. Everyone brought something different but together it worked perfectly — packed clubs and great crowds.

It was the Spectrebreakers tour for KIFOTH, with Solo from Last Influence of Brain supporting us on drums — 10 shows in 12 days. We bonded strongly with Erik and Óscar — living together in a nightliner tour bus converted for ten people, with bunks, kitchenette, bar, and lounge with TV and PlayStation. Travel by day, show at night, pack up, repeat.

A week before us it had been used by the Backstreet Boys on their Millennium tour 🙂

We stayed two days in Berlin — explored clubs and “lost” one band member 🙂 I filmed much of the tour — maybe I’ll upload the documentary someday, including a crash course in Slovak and Mexican swear words.

The tour produced the live CD Tierra Electrica. Later we met again at WGT and last shared a stage in Vienna during the Extinction of Mankind tour (2017).

As for Amduscia — yes, we played together at WGT. I laughed when one member said he was Erik’s cousin — I joked everyone in Mexico must be cousins 🙂 Whether true or not — who knows.

15. In recent years, various subcultural scenes have been reaching into the electro-synth world — often from people close to metal — such as dungeon synth, retro synthwave, beatless dark ambient, etc. How are these subgenres perceived by traditional EBM/dark-industrial pioneers? Is there potential overlap (shared events, releases), or are these separate worlds?

Today it’s difficult to put anything into a single stylistic box. Pure genres existed long ago — now we see fusions. I’m often excited by it, though I can’t always classify it clearly. It’s more like what you mention — perhaps subgenres — but music evolves and bands change their sound.

Very few bands play the same thing with the same setup all their lives. Many embrace fusion to avoid repeating themselves, and newer projects shift direction with each album. You can describe it as genre blending, but sometimes even a band becomes hard to categorize — Ministry’s Twitch vs. Filth Pig, or Front Line Assembly’s Caustic Grip vs. IED.

I do see potential there. Darkwave for me is more about philosophy and atmosphere than structure. I love Comaduster — experimental vocal approaches — and I can imagine joint events or compilations. It sounds like a soundtrack to a bleak life where nothing hopeful lies ahead — a dark place you fall into while listening. Alien Production compilations often create exactly that ominous atmosphere.

16. What is your view on noise, and is there something like a dark-industrial manifesto?

Noise is an interesting experiment for me personally, but I couldn’t listen to a full album — maybe 15 minutes at most.

As for a “manifesto”, I see Slovak compilations released by Aliens Production — and also Dark Wars or releases from Electrofrequent — as legendary world-class outputs representing the best of the Slovak scene. It should be said that the quality of Slovak dark electronic music is widely respected internationally.

17. Where in the world has KIFOTH reached through concerts, labels, and collaborations? What were the highlights of your career?

I already mentioned labels and festivals like Wave-Gotik-Treffen. But we also fulfilled dreams by opening for Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps, Skinny Puppy, Combichrist, and sharing festivals with Leather Strip, Hocico, Dive, Haujobb, Vomito Negro, Velvet Acid Christ, Placebo Effect, Suicide Commando, Mortiis, Absurd Minds, In Strict Confidence, Atari Teenage Riot, and many others.

As an early fan of The Dark I later performed live with them when we supported Front 242 — they even borrowed my keyboards. I was also a fan of Vanessa and eventually became a member, writing most of the material for Ghost Army and producing the album. We completed three tours — their most successful attendance-wise — over 40 shows between 2019–2025.

I performed with musicians who had been my idols — Daniel Rodný, Mojmír Papalescu, Jarda Stuchlý, Tuzex, Ďuro from The Dark, Boris Brna — guested with Samhain and Last Influence of Brain, and work with Eclipsed.

Many collaborations and remixes — including Vanessa’s Captagon remixed by Jürgen Engler, remixes for Sleepwalk, Brain Leisure, Front Line Assembly, Conjure One, and community projects with Ken Marshall.

I’ve collaborated or improvised live with James Mendez and Don Gordon. Currently I participate in Subcon remix sessions — every month Cevin Key shares stems from demos, around 50 musicians create short reinterpretations, and these are assembled into an hour-long mix with video. It’s inspiring and community-driven — contributors include artists like Edward Ka-Spel.

18. Can you recall a memorable story from KIFOTH’s live shows that the band still talks about today?

Haha — there are tons of stories. We used to keep track of KIFOTH gigs, but once we passed 150 we stopped counting. I think we’re somewhere around ~230 now (it’s been 33 years since our first show — not counting the very first basement gig in Petržalka we played for Rybyho). And almost every show comes with its own story.

From sleeping in a shop window in Prague after a gig with Sever Illusion, to escaping by car through a park while the police chased us for disturbing the peace — because we were performing in a city fountain after 10pm without permission.

One of the most memorable ones was definitely ending a concert in a holding cell in Wrocław. The police took us in on suspicion of damaging club equipment. The show ended around midnight on Saturday, and they came straight to the venue to detain us. Each of us was locked in solitary. My wife managed to arrange an interpreter through the embassy, but only by Monday — so we could testify before a Polish prosecutor. We were released after roughly 36 hours. Because of that, I missed a flight from Barcelona for a business trip.

On the way home we were driving so fast that Polish police stopped us for speeding — luckily we talked our way out of it. We told them our story and basically said they wouldn’t get any money from us anyway 🙂

There are loads more stories — like in Poland where municipal police would come every hour to collect a “fine” (a bribe) for noise disturbance, which supposedly prevented an international festival from being shut down. Dealing with the police always seems to be part of the fun.

In Chomutov, there was a club scheduled for demolition — basically a concrete bunker. A week before it was torn down, someone organized an illegal industrial festival there. We didn’t know that, and probably neither did most of the audience. One performance involved smashing walls and floors with jackhammers. Some fans even came over from Germany.

The surprise came after 10pm when the police showed up and demanded the event stop immediately. The organizer called everyone inside, slammed the heavy iron doors shut, and welded all entrances from the inside. I don’t know whether the welding gear was prepared in advance or belonged to one of the industrial bands — but the doors only opened the next morning after the event ended.

And out of those 200+ shows, I could easily tell another fifty stories.

19. What are KIFOTH’s live plans for 2026?

The touring cycle for the last album went very well in 2025 and we’ve received some invitations. So far, two summer festival shows in Karlovy Vary are confirmed. A club in Brno where we played in December has also reached out about repeating the gig.

I’d like to plan one or two shows in Slovakia during the summer as well. It’s still January and clubs don’t yet know their budgets — I’d estimate around 4–5 shows, which has been our standard recently.

At the same time, we want to record a new album this year. We’ll see how that goes.

.

20. A music album, book, film, series, video game, and tattoo studio you’d recommend

As I mentioned before, I don’t have much time to follow current trends, and multimedia is completely saturated with new releases. Every week there are tons of Mixcloud sets coming out — I play some from time to time — and when I check the tracklists, at least 70% of the band names are completely new to me, and I’m honestly too lazy to chase down their albums. Partly because overall quality has improved a lot. I think that’s mainly due to the accessibility and price of tools and software — both for making music and for final production. Promotion is aggressive as well. I used to actively search for new bands — nowadays I sometimes resist new stuff instead.

So I won’t name any new artists — I wait for proven ground. The last thing I bought was The Tear Garden – Astral Elevator, which really impressed me, especially the opening part of the album because it reminded me of Process by Skinny Puppy :-D. I don’t want to plug Aliens Production too much, but I enjoy their compilations — they mix bands that all sound a bit different, which keeps listening interesting.

When it comes to film, I’m biased — I’m a hardcore sci-fi fan — but I have to say recent years haven’t brought many innovative titles or surprises. Sadly David Lynch is gone, Spielberg isn’t very active, and Ridley Scott sometimes misses the mark. It feels like TV productions occasionally reach higher quality these days, even if there aren’t that many standout series either. I’m not strictly sci-fi though — even if Battlestar Galactica is the holy grail for me. I enjoy Noah Hawley’s work like Fargo, and I appreciated his Alien series too — even if it wasn’t exactly what I expected, it did push the status quo forward.

Books — I’m pure Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams. I think I’ve read about 95% of their work, but there’s always something worth revisiting. Otherwise I read manuals and listen to biographies as audiobooks. On holidays I enjoy short fiction — especially the annual Slovak anthology Fantázia, which proves we have plenty of young talent here.

I don’t play games, and the tattoo studio I admire is Recoil Free Art Studio in Trnava — Laco is truly a king.

21. Is there anyone from the local or international scene you’d like to see interviewed on Jablká ďaleko od stromu?

These questions have pretty much exhausted me 🙂 and I have to admit I didn’t know Jablká before. When you approached me I checked out the site and discovered things I had no idea about and some very interesting interviews — wow, good job. I’m browsing through it now and there’s a lot of great material. Hopefully I won’t pick someone you’ve already covered — but you could interview Waldemar, the organizer of the Hradby Samoty festival. Talk about the history, where it’s heading, and some background context.

22. Final motto or message

Do what you enjoy — there will always be someone who appreciates it. And do things in a way that leaves something behind you, something that can influence the future for the better. I don’t know what happens after death — but what if reincarnation actually works? I’d like to be reborn into something better 🙂
