#310 Sniffah // Memphis Rap // DJ Sniffah // 4.6.2026

1. Čo práve robíš a čo ťa najviac zaujíma v týchto dňoch ?

Čau! Tieto dni dokončujem tretiu skladbu z pripravovaného splitu Sniffah. Split bude hudobne trochu inde než doterajšia tvorba, nechajme sa prekvapiť, s kým split bude a čo to bude zač!

Podľa nálady skladby potom vyberám a strihám vhodný acapella sampel (izolovaná rapová stopa), prípadne oslovujem reperov, ktorí by sa do danej nálady skladby hodili.

V tom období resp. pár rokov pred tým som odhodil predsudky a začal aktívne počúvať moderný rap (trap), ktorý práve veľmi čerpá z južanskej scény 90. rokov.

12. Peter Beste ako prvý prepojil 90s nórsky black metal s US rapovou scénou cez fotodokumentáciu oboch scén.

Naživo budem hrať asi niekedy v lete v Bratislave, ináč nemám booknuté okrem Dj setov nič (kľudne sa ozývajte, ak chcete live set show).

20. Čo v týchto dňoch počúvaš, pozeráš a čítaš?

1. What are you doing right now, and what interests you the most these days?

Hi! These days I'm finishing the third track for an upcoming Sniffah split release. Musically, the split will be a bit different from my previous work, so let's wait and see who the split will be with and what exactly it will turn out to be!

2. You recently released the cassette Zimny on your Calvos73 label. What kind of response have you received so far, and where has the album reached around the world?

The response has been great. Out of the edition of 111 copies, fewer than 30 are left. So far I've been sending cassettes mainly to the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but I've also shipped a few copies to places like Belgium, Spain, Germany, and Japan.

3. The album contains seven tracks, three of which are collaborations. What inspired the songs, and how do the titles relate to the music?

When creating my music, I always start with the music/instrumental itself, which I build from scratch using only drum machines and synthesizers. Depending on the mood of the track, I then select and edit a suitable acapella sample (an isolated rap vocal track), or I reach out to rappers whose style would fit the atmosphere of the song. It's an interesting process because sometimes I even try to match the acapella harmonically, especially when the rapper's original performance has a more melodic delivery.

The original songs that these instrumentals come from actually sound completely different, so through my tracks I'm giving these old, often deeply underground rap recordings a new life. The titles are connected to memories, specific periods of my life, or references to things I want to immortalize in the form of a song. Sometimes they're references to films (Flesh & Blood), while on several releases I've referenced the Japanese PlayStation franchise Dark Souls (Shiny, Blood Stain, Primordial Serpent Kaath).

4. Who are the artists featured on the collaborations, and why did you choose to work with them?

For the three tracks featuring live rappers, I first sent a beat to Dismemberment from Vienna. He immediately got into it and sent me a vocal track within two days. I know Timur (Dismemberment) through DJ Sacred, a Ukrainian producer and founder of the Dungeon Rap genre, whom we also booked for our event Dungeon Rap Vol. 1 at Fuga in April 2025. Dismemberment is both a producer and rapper and a member of Temple Drive, the label founded by DJ Sacred. We chose the title 6 Feet Deep together because he uses that phrase in the lyrics.

The process was similar for the other collaborations. For example, on the track Jarre De Pickles, the French rapper Pierre (BUFFETxxFROID) also uses that phrase in his lyrics. Pierre is a fairly active rapper in France, and I know him through his involvement in grindcore bands. I sent him a beat that I thought he would enjoy, and the result was, in my opinion, a very strong introspective track with a melancholic atmosphere.

Phellup, on the other hand, is a talented young guy from Bratislava who had experimented with rapping before, but this was his first experience recording a track.

5. The entire album is steeped in wintry, gloomy colors. Is that a reference to a particular dark genre or period, or did you simply have a long winter?

I like winter, so it never feels too long to me. And yes, as the cassette title suggests, I wanted to create a genuinely "wintery" album. I wanted it to lean more heavily into the Dungeon Rap subgenre and incorporate dungeon synth elements, a bit of ambient music, black metal-inspired visuals, and an overall winter atmosphere.

6. Sniffah plays music influenced by 1990s Memphis rap (90MR). How and when did you discover it, and what drew you to it?

I would compare my journey into Memphis rap to the way a metalhead gradually discovers more extreme and underground genres over the years. I'd say that Memphis rap's relationship to hip-hop is somewhat similar to war metal's relationship to metal.

I was probably listening to rap even before I got into metal. For years I listened to boom bap and East Coast/West Coast rap without realizing that there was this massive scene in the southern United States—specifically in Memphis.

I discovered it through a friend around ten years ago, and getting into it wasn't easy at all. Around that time, or a few years earlier, I had abandoned my prejudices and started actively listening to modern rap (trap), which draws heavily from the Southern rap scene of the 1990s. Through that path I gradually discovered artists such as DJ Spanish Fly, Three 6 Mafia, and Tommy Wright III.

What captivated me was its rawness, authenticity, and the fact that it was something completely unique and previously unknown to me. Since then, I've studied all the Blogspots and channels dedicated to this small genre and devoured cassette rips that, thanks to the internet and a handful of collectors, are relatively easy to find and listen to on YouTube today.

For the first time in a long while, I felt the same excitement I had as a 14- or 15-year-old kid discovering grindcore and crust for the first time after previously knowing only bands like Cannibal Corpse or Vader.

7. How would you characterize 90s Memphis Rap (90MR), and why is it still relevant today?

Memphis rap is interesting because it developed somewhat independently from the popular boom-bap scenes on the East and West Coasts of the United States. At the time, nobody in the mainstream paid much attention to the Southern scene because it was simply different—sonically imperfect, perhaps too dark and strange.

Back then, most artists on the East and West Coasts relied on samplers and sampled jazz or funk recordings. This wasn't really the case in the South (with a few exceptions), probably because samplers were expensive and less accessible. Instead, this style of rap was often created using drum machines that were originally designed for electronic dance music.

Very few Memphis rap recordings use the classic sampled breakbeat. Other sounds, such as basslines and synth melodies, were usually played directly on synthesizers rather than sampled. Interestingly, melodies from horror movies were sometimes incorporated into old Memphis rap recordings, since horror films were extremely popular on VHS tapes in many households.

I think the genre remains relevant because of its unique combination of horror aesthetics and its unfiltered depiction of the violent criminal reality of that time and place.

8. Who were the main artists of 90MR, and what made them famous?

There are many, of course, but the most important popularizers of Memphis rap were undoubtedly Three 6 Mafia—especially Juicy J and DJ Paul. Before the official Three 6 Mafia releases, they were responsible for countless mixtapes and productions for local rappers.

Other key names include DJ Zirk, DJ Squeeky, Tommy Wright III, Gangsta Pat, and Kingpin Skinny Pimp.

It's difficult to say that these artists became truly famous in the United States or internationally in the same way that artists from New York or California did. One of the few commercially successful acts was Three 6 Mafia, who gradually broke into radio rotation and even won an Academy Award for a song featured in a film (although I believe that happened after 2000).

Memphis rap only began to emerge in popular culture relatively recently, and people are appreciating it retroactively. I think the popularity of trap music and the frequent references to these old Southern artists are largely responsible for that renewed interest.

9. Does this scene still exist in Memphis, or does it mainly survive through projects like Sniffah around the world?

I don't think there are many artists in Memphis today who are trying to make rap exactly the way Memphis rap was made in the 1990s.

As far as I know, thanks to the genre's rediscovery, artists like Tommy Wright III are still performing. However, it's still very much an underground scene. Interestingly, there are connections to the DIY hardcore and punk scenes, and some of these artists perform alongside powerviolence bands and similar acts.

The internet has definitely helped this forgotten genre. Over the last few years, it has been rediscovered by a new generation, but it's still a niche genre and cultural phenomenon.

Of course, Memphis rap continues to influence highly popular subgenres such as phonk, as well as the Dungeon Rap scene popularized by DJ Sacred.

Other contemporary artists drawing heavily from 90s Memphis rap include musicians associated with Doomshop Records, which I believe is based in Texas. Names such as DJ Akoza, MC Holocaust, and Freddie Dredd come to mind.

Still, I see it as an underground movement. In our part of the world, very few people know these artists. I could also mention Raider Klan and rapper Amber London.

One interesting fact: both phonk and Memphis rap are extremely popular in Russia and Ukraine.

10. Which modern genres grew out of 90MR, and have any of them managed to break out of the underground?

As I mentioned earlier, trap music draws heavily from Memphis rap as well as the Atlanta scene.

There's also phonk, which is characterized by dark atmospheres, heavy bass, Memphis rap acapellas, and the use of cowbells—a signature element of classic Memphis rap.

For example, the Russian artist Kaito Shoma had a track called Scary Garry that became one of the most-streamed songs in the world on certain platforms a few years ago, which is a rather surprising fact.

Another example is Beyoncé, who used an old Memphis rap acapella on her recent album Renaissance.

11. 90MR was built around very specific gear, beats, and production techniques. What equipment did the pioneers use, and what do you use yourself?

When I researched the equipment used by people like DJ Paul, I found that he worked with machines such as the Boss DR-660 drum machine and the Roland W-30 synthesizer workstation.

Some artists also used the classic Roland TR-808, which was more commonly associated with electronic dance music and techno.

For Sniffah, I currently use the following setup:

Novation Circuit, primarily for beats, loaded with sounds sampled from machines such as the Boss DR-660.
Novation Bass Station II, an excellent bass synthesizer.
Waldorf Blofeld synthesizer module.
Elektron Digitakt, which sequences everything and serves as the brain of the entire setup.

The Digitakt acts as the master controller for all the other gear. In theory, I could produce entire tracks on that machine alone.

I don't own any of the original vintage machines used by the pioneers of Memphis rap, but I do use some drum sounds derived from those devices.

At the same time, I don't want my music to sound like most contemporary artists who simply buy a "Memphis Rap Sample Pack." Too often, those productions end up sounding almost identical to one another.

12. Peter Beste was one of the first photographers to connect Norwegian black metal and American rap through his documentation of both scenes. I own his black metal book, but I've never seen the rap one. Did Peter Beste photograph the 90MR scene as well?

I only knew Peter Beste through his photographs of Norwegian black metal musicians, but I've since learned that he documented the Houston rap scene, which is fascinating in its own right.

Houston was also part of the often-overlooked Southern rap movement and certainly had connections to Memphis rap. The two scenes undoubtedly influenced one another.

Some of Houston's most important artists include the Geto Boys, DJ Screw—who invented the chopped and screwed subgenre and popularized the codeine-based drink known as Lean, which may ultimately have contributed to his death, RIP—and, among more modern artists, Paul Wall.

Paul Wall helped popularize grillz (decorative dental jewelry) during the 2000s and remains highly respected within Southern rap culture despite being white.

13. In your opinion, what do (black) metal and (90MR) rap have in common?

I think I mentioned this little curiosity to you back at Žalár. It comes from a YouTuber who did a great job highlighting the parallels with Norwegian black metal—and black metal in general.

If I remember correctly, the similarities were:

Poor sound quality – recordings were rarely made in professional studios. Most were self-recorded using whatever equipment was available.
Cassette distribution – most Memphis rap was dubbed and distributed on cassettes by the artists themselves, which also affected the sound quality since major labels had no interest in this “weird” style of rap. Satanic and horror themes – these were common in Memphis rap.

I believe Memphis rap was actually the first rap subgenre to seriously flirt with demonic imagery and dark supernatural themes, combining them with stories about street crime and violence.

14. Norwegian black metal became notorious for crimes and acts of vandalism directed at the Church—something unprecedented in rock culture at the time. Did rappers have similar excesses? I'm not talking about ordinary gang violence, but deliberate actions aimed at institutions or society.

I think the satanic themes in Memphis rap were more about coping with a dark reality and creating a certain atmosphere or narrative. I don't think there were murders inspired by occultism or anything like that.

That said, there is a fascinating conspiracy theory—an urban legend called "The 8 Sigils of Memphis Rap."

In short, the theory claims that there are eight specific recordings (the list of albums is easy to find online) during whose creation people were murdered, and that those deaths somehow became sealed into the recordings through a satanic ritual.

The legend continues by claiming that if a listener plays these recordings from an original cassette at a specific time in a cemetery, they can achieve various goals and alter reality through occult magic.

It's a pretty entertaining urban legend—perhaps invented by a Discogs seller trying to help move original cassettes for $200 apiece, haha.

15. How did this scene make its way to Europe and Slovakia?

Definitely through the internet.

That said, I don't think it ever really reached Slovakia beyond a few hundred people. Social media and trending TikTok audio clips certainly help, but I think the number of dedicated Memphis rap fans here is still very small.

What's interesting is that I know quite a few people from the international grindcore and powerviolence scenes who listen to a lot of Memphis rap.

16. Who are the main representatives of the genre today, and what are the relationships between them? Can we still talk about a scene, or is it more of an individual pursuit?

As I mentioned earlier, there is a scene in the United States centered around phonk and underground rap influenced by 90s Memphis rap, including artists such as DJ Akoza, Freddie Dredd, DJ Bucketz, and Baker.

There is also a fairly large community in Ukraine and Russia making phonk, Memphis rap, and Dungeon Rap. Some of the most notable names are DJ Sacred (also known as DJ Armok and Pillbox), DJ Bishop, and Lord Crucifix.

If we're talking strictly about Memphis rap itself, I don't think there's really a functioning scene anymore. It's more a case of artists from the 1990s being booked because of nostalgia and renewed interest in the genre. Tommy Wright III, for example, played around three European shows last year.

In our region these kinds of events are extremely rare. The closest artists to phonk or Memphis rap would probably be RNZ and Žakhéles from Slovakia or Redzed from the Czech Republic. I wouldn't call their music Memphis rap, but they definitely reference it.

As far as I know, Slovak rapper Karlo is also a big Memphis rap fan.

17. Where can people in our region experience this music or related styles live today?

I'm not aware of anyone regularly organizing events of this type in Slovakia.

I follow the local scene quite closely, and I'll say this without false modesty: at least in Bratislava, the people most likely to play Memphis rap are myself and DJ Inso.

At Fuga, Inso and I used to perform at Gafa's events, where I mainly played Memphis rap sets.

We also organize Dungeon Rap events together. Artists associated with Dungeon Rap and Memphis rap have performed there, including:

Sniffah
Dürt808 (DJ of Huga Toxxx, a Memphis rap fanatic and excellent selector)
Dismemberment
Mladey
DJ Sacred from Ukraine

DJ Sacred has probably done more than anyone else to popularize Memphis rap in Europe—and arguably worldwide—over the last decade.

(Attachments: posters for Dungeon Rap Vol. 1 & Vol. 2.)

18. The covers of your previous two albums, Segundas Grietas (2024) and Solstice (2025), feature riders on horseback. What do these motifs represent, and are the cassettes still available?

The cover of Segundas Grietas features a photograph of Prince Bajaja from the classic fairy tale, which was one of my favorite childhood stories.

I was always fascinated by the scene where his magical horse gives him a chest full of shining golden armor—serious drip.

It doesn't symbolize anything particularly deep. It's simply a materialized memory of a VHS tape that I watched dozens of times at my grandparents' house.

Of course, it also references the fantasy and sword-and-sorcery side of Dungeon Rap.

As for Solstice, I happened to come across a fantastic photo on a friend's Facebook profile (greetings to Kedrovka). She had photographed her daughter on horseback, and it fit perfectly with the concept of Solstice, a summer-themed cassette featuring brighter, more dance-oriented tracks as well as remixes from the previous cassette with Bajaja on horseback.

That's why there's a continuity of horse-riding characters between the two releases.

Both cassettes are sold out from me and from the label, but you might still find Solstice through Waldemar's distro, Sky Burial / Nomad Sky Diaries.

(Attachment: photo of the cassettes.)

19. What is Sniffah planning for 2026, and will we get to see you perform live?

As I mentioned at the beginning of this interview, I'm currently working on a split release that should come out both on vinyl and cassette.

Immediately afterward, I'll start another already-agreed split, which is also a bit unexpected stylistically. Let's keep the collaborator a surprise for now. I'll only give a hint: the artist has already appeared on Jablká Ďaleko Od Stromu.

I'm also working on a collaboration with someone that will be almost entirely dance music—bordering on house music. We plan to release one or two singles online this summer.

After that, I want to continue my solo work and make a more dance-oriented album that still remains faithful to Memphis rap roots.

Then I'd like to create what I call a "devilish shit" album—something that leans as heavily as possible into the essence of Memphis rap. It would be a return to the spirit of my first cassette, Rajas Primeras Vol. 1.

That project is probably more of a 2027 plan, depending on how quickly I'm able to produce new material.

As for live shows, I'll probably be playing in Bratislava sometime during the summer. Other than DJ sets, I don't have anything booked at the moment—so feel free to get in touch if you'd like a live performance.

20. What are you listening to, watching, and reading these days?

I've become obsessed with three records that I've been playing on repeat, and they're all completely different genres.

The first is the incredibly fun heavy metal/egg punk band Steröid from Australia and their album Chainmail Commandos (greetings to Tonko from Radiation).

The second is Swedish cloud rap/trap artist Bladee and his album Cold Visions (greetings to Seerus from Otras).

The third is the crushing American grindcore band Fake Dust and their album Decrepitizing Din of the Cerebral Psyopticon. It's the first grindcore record in a long time that has completely blown my mind, and I probably listen to it three times a day.

Today I rewatched Gummo by Harmony Korine for the first time in about fifteen years, and I liked it even more than I did the first time.

I'm also trying to finish The Penguin starring Colin Farrell, although I'm progressing slowly despite all the positive reviews from friends.

Finally, I've started reading the Japanese manga Berserk consistently, which makes me happy because the 1997 anime adaptation is one of my favorite things ever made.

21. Is there anyone you'd like to see interviewed on JDØS?

It seems like you've already interviewed just about everyone involved in extreme music or the underground, but I'd definitely like to read interviews with:

Mišo Lichý (Urban Failure, Urbsounds label, Správny Smer)
noise artist Maroš Kovaľ (Noitt, Krajné Čierno)
Peťo Kerekeš (Hlukár, Krajné Čierno)

22. A motto or final message?

I don't really have a motto.

Thanks for the interview and for the great questions!

#274 Project Gregus / Dungeon Synth / Peter / 30.6.2025

Rád skladám a experimentujem, hoci nie som hudobník.

6 Ktorú skladbu z nového albumu by si vyzdvihol?

10 Aké koncertné plány máš do blízkej budúcnosti?

Nekoncertujem.

Zoberte proste intrá, outrá a medzihry nejakých blackmetalových kapiel dokopy a máte dungeon.

A zahraničie?
krásna a fantastická stredoveká hudba.

A skladal som samozrejme. Nejak ma to neberie.

Zakladateľ festivalu Hradby Samoty a vydavateľstva Sky Burial Michal "Waldemar" Marcinčin, to urobil parádne. Kto sa ešte nezoznámil s týmto žánrom, do toho. Taktiež sa mi páči tvoja kompilácia "Alternative Is Doom", ktorá je famózne urobená a každá jedna kapela tam má originálny song.

20 Hudobný album, kniha, film, seriál, počítačová hra, tetovacie štúdio a pivo ktoré odporúčaš.

Hudobný album - Narsilion: Nerbeleth
Kniha - Jürgen Todenhöfer: 10 dní v Islamskom štáte
Počítačová hra: nehrávam
Tetovacie štúdio: nemám ani jedno tetovanie
Pivo: "Kysláč" Eddy vo výčape u Ernieho pri Starej Tržnici v Bratislave. Niekedy si dám aj tri.

21 Vinyl/CD/MC?

Ehm..., no predsa môj nový album "Purple Sky Beloved".

U nás - s Tomaxom z Galadrielu a Konfliktu.
V zahraničí - s Jimom Kirkwoodom.

23 Motto na záver.

"Život patrí tým, čo sa neposerú". BUKOWSKI, CHARLES

============================================================================

1. Who are you, what do you do, and what’s been on your mind the most these days?

I’m just another person in the line who chose to endure all this madness through creativity and discovering the world. People mostly know me as a traveler to conflict zones. I give talks and write about countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria. But music is an inseparable part of my life—professionally (I sell LPs and CDs), and as a hobby. I enjoy composing and experimenting, even though I’m not a musician.

2. What bands have you played in, and what did you play?

I've always had just my own project—aside from one band attempt, where members still had to play only what I composed. I’d be a dictator in a band, and that role doesn’t suit my personality, so I prefer composing on my own.

3. Describe your latest gear (instruments, equipment, effects). What made it interesting for you?

Right now, I’m composing on a Yamaha PSR 7000 sequencer. Everything is played live, and then I just add effects in software, include samples, voices, and experiment with sounds.

4. Tell me something about the new Project Gregus album Purple Sky Beloved—how was it created, and who collaborated on it?

This album holds special meaning for me. Do you remember those winter evenings before it snowed? The sky used to turn beautifully purple. I always loved that and wanted to capture that feeling in music. The songs were mostly created around the same time, roughly one or two years ago. At its core, it’s dungeon synth with experimental elements. Few artists in this genre dare to experiment, but I like stepping outside established templates. So far, it hasn’t exactly fallen on fertile ground, though I’ve received quite a few positive responses—for example, from one of the genre’s pioneers, Jim Kirkwood, which I deeply appreciate. The mastering was done by respected Russian sound engineer Anatoly “Tokee” Grinberg, who also makes fantastic music himself.

5. What influences your music the most?

Sound, melody, rhythm, and feeling. I play, something clicks with me, and then I just develop that motif.

6. Which track from the new album would you highlight?

Hmm... probably “Two Worlds,” where I explore belief in God, the existence of heaven and hell, and the realization that none of it actually exists. That it’s just a human invention so people don’t feel alone in their suffering. That said, I’m not someone who condemns faith or Christianity. In my youth, I was involved with the Salesians, and that gave me a lot. I just think we humans, with our limited “equipment,” are incapable of truly understanding how things really are. For me, it’s shrouded in mystery, and it doesn’t bother me anymore. I’m at peace with the idea that maybe there is no God. And if there is, that’s fine—but I’d have a few things to say to him. All my inner turmoil gets filtered out through music, sports, or other pleasant activities.

7. What is the moment that separates "manual skill" from art?

That’s a difficult question. I’ve thought about it for a long time. I think it comes down to personality. Artists in general aren’t exceptionally skilled manually—including myself. More emotional and sensitive people tend to have a sense for music, literature, and art in general—but ask them to fix a light switch... I can handle that, but my father, for example, who is an excellent writer, cannot. Of course, this isn’t a rule, but I’ve noticed it often holds true.

8. Should art have boundaries, or are there topics art should stay away from?

Personally, I don’t like when art is mixed with politics. Art is supposed to inspire and unite—politics divides. I also have my views and opinions, but I would never put them into my music.

9. An interesting story (or stories) from the life of your project that you can share? How high have you climbed on the decadence scale?

Phew... Since I don’t perform live, I don’t really have any “shocking” stories, and I’m not generally much of a “bohemian.” I’ve done some foolish things here and there. Like once getting drunk with a Fatah fighter, “illegally” crossing into Palestinian-occupied territory, and then coming back hungover through an Israeli checkpoint—which wasn’t exactly met with understanding. But that’s a minor thing, really.

10. Any concert plans in the near future?

I don’t perform. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time.

11. What are your expectations for the new album, and in which direction will your future work go?

Expectations? I just hope a few people like the music and that it helps them get through all the madness going on in the world.

12. Do you feel like part of the domestic Dungeon Synth scene?

Let’s say yes.

13. How do you think the Slovak Dungeon Synth scene has developed since its beginnings, and what milestones have you noted?

For a long time I thought I was the only one composing in this style, but then excellent projects started popping up—like Owlsilar Gate, Budeč, Occult Obsidian, Cromworx—and I realized I wasn’t alone.

14. How do you view Dungeon Synth within the broader synth (or metal) genre? Are there other subgenres close to DS, any crossover?

Dungeon Synth is associated with metal mostly because of projects like Mortiis and Burzum, which were foundational and come from a metal background. Jim Kirkwood is more of an “electronic” musician and his music leans more ambient. But I’d still say Dungeon Synth, in its atmosphere, is closer to metal. Just take the intros, outros, and interludes of black metal albums and blend them—you get Dungeon.

15. Which Slovak and foreign underground bands and genres have you liked in the past, and which do you enjoy now?

From the Slovak scene, definitely Orkrist and Galadriel. For me, they’re the absolute top when it comes to atmospheric music here. Abroad? I like the older Mortiis material, keyboard-era Burzum, and lots of dark ambient projects. I love the Swedish project Arcana and the Spanish group Narsilion—that’s beautiful and fantastic medieval music.

16. During the pandemic we experienced a slowdown and isolation—some of us went to illegal gigs and appreciated everything that was created. Now we’re back in a world of concert overkill and endless new music. How did you experience that time, and do you miss it at least a little?

Well, I didn’t slow down at all. To avoid going crazy from all the human “stupidity,” pressure, job restrictions, fanaticism, and being shamed for not being vaccinated, I spent a lot of time outdoors, in the mountains. I even visited friends in Iraq, where they quickly gave up on all the nonsense rules once they realized nothing catastrophic was happening, and people weren’t dying like dominoes. And I kept composing, of course. I don’t look back fondly on that period, because many close friends mentally collapsed, stopped calling, and lost interest in any personal contact. But over time I realized it brought new people into my life—brave, honest, humble ones who’ve made peace with the fact that we’ll all die one day and, most importantly, don’t carry pride. I still meet with those people, and as for the others—I don’t care about them anymore. I rarely go to concerts. It doesn’t really do anything for me. Music is such an intimate thing for me, I don’t need a concert—not during COVID, and not now.

17. What local or international event is the best in your opinion, and why?

For me, it’ll always be Montana Metal Fest in Špania Dolina. It’s a one-day festival with the best underground bands. I also sell music there, and once I even gave a lecture. But above all, it’s about meeting people—amazing people I really care about. I look forward to this event every year and recommend it to everyone.

18. What do you think is the common denominator that connects artists from various genres/scenes, and what divides them?

Honestly—music connects people, and I can’t stand talk like: “This is crap,” “This shouldn’t exist,” “I hate hip-hop,” “I hate techno,” etc. Music is deeply individual. It stirs emotions, comforts us in suffering, brings empathy and catharsis, makes us better people. For me, music is beyond criticism. I personally like things most would probably call horrible—but for me, they carry a special and unique meaning.

19. Which sound (studio, album/band), artwork (album cover), and music video on the local scene have caught your attention recently?

I really like the artwork and projects featured on the second edition of Czech & Slovak Dungeon Synth Compilation II on cassette. Michal “Waldemar” Marcinčin—founder of the Hradby Samoty festival and Sky Burial label—did an amazing job. If you haven’t explored this genre yet, go for it. I also love your compilation Alternative Is Doom, which is fantastically made, and every band on it has an original track.

20. One music album, book, film, series, video game, tattoo studio, and beer you’d recommend.

Album: Narsilion – Nerbeleth
Book: Jürgen Todenhöfer – 10 Days in the Islamic State
Video game: I don’t play them.
Tattoo studio: I don’t have any tattoos.
Beer: “Kysláč” Eddy on tap at Ernie’s by Stará Tržnica in Bratislava. Sometimes I have three.

21. Vinyl/CD/MC?

Uhm… My new album Purple Sky Beloved, of course. It was released on vinyl in a run of 50 copies—10 are already reserved, so buy quickly.

22. Is there someone from the Slovak or international scene you’d like to see interviewed on Jablká ďaleko od stromu?

From Slovakia – Tomax from Galadriel and Konflikt.
Abroad – Jim Kirkwood.

23. Final motto

“Life belongs to those who don’t shit their pants.” — Charles Bukowski

#252 Infamis Tenebre / Dungeon Chant Music / Piotr Huzar, Infamis / 28.12.2024

1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?

Piotr Huzar:  I am a vocalist involved in INFAMIS TENEBRE. As Nietzsche said, "Without music, life would be a mistake.”

Infamis:  I am Infamis, and I have been creating under this pseudonym since 1996. I am a musician, author, and composer of music. I love working with musical instruments, I collect instruments from various parts of the world, and I run a workshop for building acoustic instruments called 'Industrial Sounds,' where I produce storm drums (spring drums).

2. Which bands have you been a part of, and what instruments did you play?

P: I began my adventure with singing in quite an unusual way—it all started with finding a microphone in some alleyway after a heavy night of partying. I responded to an ad (posted on a tree in the park!) for a heavy metal band from Szczecin called Eternal Symphony. Between 2001 and 2003, we played local clubs, performing our own songs and covers of Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate. After that, I joined Dittohed, a band from Police that played a more thought-out blend of alternative rock and metal. We only left behind one demo from 2010 or 2011, which I still consider to be a solid piece of music. Along the way, I had a brief flirtation with AOR-style rock and spent a long period living in England.

When I returned to Poland, the desire to make music came back, though I had developed a growing interest in translating my experimental musings on art—shaped by avant-garde literary influences—into music. Reaching out to Infamis for this purpose turned out to be a perfect decision.

I:  In the 90s, I played in various metal bands, starting out as a guitarist, but after a few years, I switched from guitar to keyboard. From 1998 to 2020, I ran the music label Beast Of Prey. I have been a member of many different musical projects. Besides INFAMIS TENEBRE, I am actively involved in the project VOICES OF THE COSMOS and I am the creator of the project ELECTRIC URANUS. I have been playing keyboard instruments (keyboards and synthesizers) and drums for 25 years.

3. Describe your latest gear (instrument, equipment, effects) and what made it interesting for you.

I: I use a very large number of instruments. My main instruments are the Korg Triton, Korg Nautilus, and Roland Gaia, as well as a whole array of acoustic instruments: frame drums, shamanic drums, banduras, marching kettledrums (timpani), horns, trumpets, bells, etc. I love working with real instruments; I don't use a computer for composing and I don't use VST plugins. Of course, I use effects pedals, such as the Line 6 M13 and Lexicon Reverbs, along with a suitable preamp and Lexicon audio interface. I always compose and record everything using the instruments.

P: I won't shine here with either knowledge or wealth – I recorded all the vocals for the first INFAMIS TENEBRE album using a condenser microphone, the Novox NC-1, which is certainly not among the most expensive. However, it's a decent microphone capable of producing high-quality, raw tracks ready for further production.

4. Tell me something about your latest recording—how it was created and who collaborated on it.

P: We live in two different cities, so our collaboration took place by sending tracks to each other over the internet. From my side, it felt pretty "cult-like," if I may put it that way, as I would drive to record vocals in a makeshift rehearsal room located in the middle of a forest, completely in the middle of nowhere, about a half-hour drive from my house. Thanks to the generosity of some thrash metal friends (Burza & Robal – shoutout to them!), I was able to take my laptop there and spend time practicing phrases, recording, tweaking, and so on. The sessions were, I must admit, quite exhausting—not because of the work itself, but due to the amount of alcohol that often appeared toward their end. It was an excellent spot and great company.

I: I recorded the music in my home studio, Hell House. During the Covid pandemic, I was confined to my home, unable to go out, and I spent entire days composing. This is how the demo version came to be, and once I had all the instrumental parts confirmed, I recorded the tracks for the album 'Widma.' This process took many months, as some instruments were challenging during the recording sessions. I had to record the largest drums and marching drums in a professional studio, Studio Progress, because I didn't have enough microphones in my home studio to capture them properly. I always compose all the music myself and record all the instruments on my own. The vocal parts were written by Piotr; he was responsible for composing and recording them. Later, I did the final mixes and sent them to a professional mastering studio, www.szszwarc.pl. Szymon Szwarc, who is incredibly talented, prepared the appropriate mastering for the CD, MC cassette, and vinyl record.

5. What influences you the most when creating music?

P: Life's tough situations, requiring resilience and a steadfast focus, bring more than enough inspiration to occasionally check whether one still remains a sensitive human being. And I am very sensitive. It's a bit inconvenient at times, but sometimes it's a good thing—it makes observing the surrounding world more precise. I think I have more than enough inspiration from life itself. A lot of vocal phrases just pop into my head out of nowhere, often during a morning or evening bath, when I’m lying in the tub for a while. Perhaps the spontaneous, deep breathing I tend to do during those moments unlocks some sort of musical chakras within me—I don't know. I would love to draw most of my inspiration from beautiful, profound books, but in the end, the raw concrete prose of life seems to ignite my need to nurture sensitivity the most…

I: With me, it varies. But above all, I need to release some of my emotions. I always create when I have too much anger and madness built up inside me. I have to expel these dark emotions most of the time. I can feel inside that there is too much of something, and then I sit down at the keys. This is how I cope with my own madness. I always accumulate a lot of darkness within me, which can be heard in the music of INFAMIS TENEBRE. Without music, I would be a raving madman.

6. Which song and lyrics from your band would you highlight?

P: I really like the last track on the album titled "Szaman". For me, it encapsulates the artistic concept of the album, which revolves in an ephemeral way around shamanic transcendence. Our band's poet, Paweł Zaremba, wrote an excellent text about the shamanic style of spirituality, which we, along with Infamis, dressed in our music. I’d like to point out that the combination of classic dungeon synth elements in this track with an unconventional approach for the genre—unusual vocal arrangements and atypical singing—has produced something truly magical. It’s one of those extraordinary gems where two distant musical approaches blend together exceptionally well. I’d say something similar about "Wiedźma", too.

I:  Yes, for me 'Shaman' is also the most important song on the album. When we were recording the album 'Specters,' we particularly liked the track 'Witch' – it was the first song to have vocals created for it, and it was this song that ignited a magical flame within us. It tells the story of a woman with the gift of sight; it's not about an ordinary witch or a folk healer, but a conscious woman who shapes the world around her. She possesses abilities that we will never experience; she is like a primordial mother, like the old Earth, and she is what maintains balance. I also like the song 'Venom' – it has a short but very expressive lyric, containing a certain anger that I identify with. 'Venom' is very emotional with great vocal lines. We are very pleased with the entire album; I listen to it with joy and enjoy all the tracks.

7. What is the moment that separates "technical skill" from art?

P: Art is such a broad phenomenon that it can serve many purposes – from entertainment to deep transformation. For me, what matters most is that art possesses magical qualities and sharpens my way of perceiving the world. Without that, it becomes a waste of time. I believe the moment that separates technical skill from art is when creativity transcends craftsmanship, evoking emotions, altering perception, and offering something unique.

I: What is dangerous is the use of technology by irresponsible individuals. If someone cannot play a musical instrument, they are not a musician. One must be able to play in order to maintain sensitivity and artistic sense. You don't need to be a virtuoso or a professional pianist; a passion for playing and some predisposition for composing and creating something new is enough. For that, the human factor is needed, a sensitivity that technology lacks. A machine operates in a binary way – something either exists or it doesn't. A person feels that there is much more between 0 and 1; there lies sensitivity.

8. Should art have boundaries, or are there topics that art shouldn’t touch?

P: This is quite a complex topic, far from black-and-white. I used to think it was black-and-white, but I no longer hold that view. The core idea is that the primary purpose of art has always been, and still is, the development of personality, the creation of new associations, and the deepening of personal sensitivity toward any subject. However, for art to truly transform its audience, it must always possess freedom and an absence of restrictions when it comes to addressing taboo or, frankly, any topics. Art must inherently contain mystery.

This means it must also allow for transgression, surprises, and ventures into the dangerous realms of the mind. This simply isn’t possible without total freedom. It might be offensive, shocking at times, even unpleasant—but that’s precisely the point. Art should not be relegated to a bag filled with fun, flowers, sunshine, and universal love. Personally, I believe art is a tool of transformation, although contemporary culture seems determined to uproot and kill this ancient attribute of art. With Infamis, we counteract mediocrity, superficiality, and polite back-patting.

On the other hand, I must also acknowledge that completely unrestricted art can sometimes be not only dangerous but also hopeless in its pointlessness or contrived abstraction. All of this sounds wonderful in theory, but in practice, one must also have the courage to point out when something is simply garbage. Like a banana taped to a wall. To me, this kind of "art" doesn’t communicate with its audience; it hides behind a veil of abstraction, containing absolutely nothing of substance.

In terms of denying art the freedom to address any topic, I find that absurd. Such an approach reminds me of a regressive,  Putin-style way of thinking. Art should be a space for unrestricted exploration and expression, not constrained by ideological or moral boundaries. Limiting what art can touch upon is not only a disservice to creativity but also a dangerous precedent for censorship and control.

9. Share an interesting story or stories from the life of your band. How far have you climbed on the ladder of decadence?

I: I have two stories related to INFAMIS TENEBRE. The first one is about a sound session and concerns all those unsettling sounds that are found between the tracks — those whispers, rustles, and crackles. It was Piotr's idea to create something like that. I liked it, but I had to do some field recording. For this purpose, I used a Zoom spatial recorder and went to the river. I live near the largest Polish river, the Vistula, where there is always silence and peace, so I crept through various bushes to record the birds. I did this for three days, and it was unsuccessful. I recorded myself walking through the bushes, digging sticks into the bark of trees, capturing various sounds. On the last day, as I was finishing my recordings and heading home, I heard the birds, quickly ran, and managed to record them. I had been hunting for them for several days without success, and just when I had a lot of other recordings — I managed to capture those birds. :)

The other story is related to a photo session. When I put on the costume and stepped out onto a vast, furrowed field, the farmers from the village jumped into their tractors and came over to me. They had to see what kind of devil was wandering through their fields. No one dared to approach closely; no one talked to me — they just sat in their tractors at a safe distance from me. :)

P: The "ladder of decadence," in my case, was directly tied to the sessions in the rehearsal room, as I’ve mentioned before. To amuse the owner of the rehearsal space, I would often bring along a backpack full of cheap, bottom-shelf, lowlife beers, carefully selected from small shops where such "gems" could be found. High-alcohol, disgustingly bad beers of the worst kind became a part of the process of recording "Widma," somewhat as an act of comedic masochism. Romper Extreme 12% and a few other brands, I think, fit perfectly into the idea of decadence. And yes, I really drank those more than once.

10. What creative plans do you have for the future?

I: In December and January, I have planned to record video material that will be used to create one or two music videos for INFAMIS TENEBRE. We have just released the first short music video. The plan is to make music videos for all the tracks from the album "Widma". I have prepared the skeletons of two covers, which we will upload to our site infamistenebre.bandcamp.com after recording. I am also working on and jotting down various musical ideas for the next INFAMIS TENEBRE recordings – they will sound even better quality-wise, as they will be recorded using newer preamps.

Still in December, I will be releasing music from the ELECTRIC URANUS project that I created this year. As for the VOICES OF THE COSMOS project, we are planning a tour for 2025 and discussions are ongoing regarding concerts. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to perform with the VOICES OF THE COSMOS project at the fantastic Hradby Samoty festival, which took place in Bratislava at the A4 club. I hope to return to Slovakia to perform as INFAMIS TENEBRE.

P: I’m learning new things on the computer that will ultimately give me a better chance at finding a better job. However, I prefer not to go into the details of this endeavor.

11. Do you feel like you’re part of the local scene?

I: The dungeon synth scene in Poland is very small – which is somewhat strange, as our country is larger than yours, yet we have fewer projects in this genre than Slovakia. It’s hard to talk about belonging to a scene; we are certainly a part of it, and I hope this will change. In the city where I live, no one besides me creates this kind of music. I live in northern Poland, and even in this part of the country, I don’t know of any active projects in this genre. In southern Poland, there are a few projects, with the most active being ALEMBIK and NIRNAETH. There are a few other creators as well, but they only publish their music on Bandcamp, often being reclusive individuals who do not perform and are not very active – although they are, of course, part of the scene.

P: I don’t really think about it. I’m so overwhelmed with various responsibilities that I don’t have time to build deeper relationships with the so-called ‘scene.’ I prefer to focus on maintaining relationships with the people closest to me, and I don’t particularly care about feeling like a part of the scene.

12. How do you think the local scene has evolved since the 1990s, and what was unique about each decade for you personally, for your band, and for the underground (UG) scene?

P: The scene is definitely moving in some direction, but whether it’s true evolution or just change for its own sake, I’m not so sure. I think the development of the internet and social media largely dictates the nature of these transformations. And unfortunately, I may be fitting into the stereotype of a grumpy old man complaining that 'things were better back then,' but still… I can’t help feeling a deep nostalgia for the days of frequently going to the post office. In the 1990s, that was the only way to operate in the underground. Writing handwritten letters, without a computer, and waiting days for a reply—it all brought immense excitement. Today, that kind of emotion is somewhat missing when almost everything is available with just a mouse click.

I live on the fourth floor of an apartment building, so to check my mailbox, I either walk down or take the elevator. I’ll never forget the period of correspondence with a few ‘zines from Thailand, with whom I exchanged tapes, records, and local magazines. It was something magical—when I opened the elevator and saw a thick envelope sticking out of my mailbox, I’d feel a genuine thrill. It was amazing. There’s still some excitement today when receiving packages, but due to constant online communication with people, it has lost a bit of its magic.

Is that bad? Not necessarily—it’s just the way things are now. A defining feature of this decade, however, is the growing oversaturation of everything and the danger of overstimulation, which can lead to numbness. Whether or not the scene evolves in the deeper sense, this oversaturation and desensitization are certainly challenges we have to contend with in maintaining meaningful relationships with it.

I:  In the 90s, riding the wave of Cold Meat Industry, there were more projects in Poland creating music of this kind. It was popular in the metal scene and evolved, leading to the formation of the first labels, such as Fluttering Dragon and my label Beast Of Prey. This gave rise to the 'dark anti-music scene'; people began to listen to and identify with various genres: dark ambient, industrial, noise, and also dungeon synth. New communities were forming, but a dedicated dungeon synth scene never emerged in Poland. There are fans of this music, and they still exist, but often they are also fans of metal or dark ambient music.

The 90s are unique in a way because, at that time, Poland had quite a few projects creating dungeon synth music. It's a shame that these projects faded away and didn’t continue their music. Only NIRNAETH and INFAMIS remain; no one else comes to mind. Perhaps now, 30 years later, projects creating this kind of music will start to emerge in Poland, and the scene will begin to thrive like in other countries.

13. What advantages did bands starting in the 1990s have over today’s bands, and vice versa—what do you see as the benefits of today’s era?

I: I think that today it doesn't matter; what’s important is to be consistent in your actions. Whether someone was creating music in the 90s doesn’t mean that they create better music than a project that has been around for a few years. In my opinion, it has no significance. I just want to listen to good music, that’s all.

Projects that started their careers in the 90s certainly faced much greater equipment difficulties. Today, everything is accessible; there are many great instruments, everything is generally available, and you can record at home without a studio. Artists starting their musical journey have a much easier start. So there are significant benefits.

P: Back in the 1990s, there were far fewer bands, and both the technological gap and access to technology were entirely different. This is most evident in niche genres like dungeon synth, where today anyone can download music software—often from torrents—and produce a small batch of CDs at their own expense.

On one hand, this accessibility is a blessing for people hungry to create. On the other hand… well, sometimes when I browse Bandcamp, I get the impression that some "artists" spend more time thinking about album covers and track titles than on the music itself! And I know I’m not alone in these observations.

14. Which UG bands and genres did you enjoy in the past, and which do you like today? Which ones annoyed you then, and which annoy you now?

P. I try to maintain a broad perspective on music, immersing myself fully in the projects I listen to, attempting to understand the emotions driving the artist. The level of attentiveness I bring to this is so intense that the clear boundaries between what’s underground and what’s more mainstream seem to blur in my mind. I don’t tend to listen to music I don’t like long enough for it to annoy me, so I try to avoid issues of that kind. have a soft spot for many albums from labels like Cold Meat Industry and Old Europa Cafe, and I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. With age, I’ve also started paying closer attention to pop music, without being influenced by any subcultural ideologies. I can appreciate some tracks by Rihanna, Sia or George Michael, only to then dive into Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Saxon or Faith No More. The range of what interests me in music is rather wide.

I: I started with metal music; initially, it was thrash and doom metal, and later I became a fan of black metal, which I listen to the most to this day. In the first half of the 1990s, I became very interested in electronic music and dark ambient. I was heavily influenced by projects from Cold Meat Industry, and this developed into my passion. I also discovered the world of industrial and electronic music. Today, I listen to a wide variety of music and have an open mind, but I definitely reach for black metal, dungeon synth, and dark ambient the most. I don't remember anything bothering me in the scene back then, and I was definitely more orthodox than I am now.

15. During the pandemic, we experienced a slowdown and isolation, during which we attended illegal concerts and appreciated everything being created. Now we’re back in a world oversaturated with concerts and new music—how did you perceive that period of slowing down, and do you miss it, even a little?

I: It was a great time because I could dedicate it to composing music for the album 'Widma' by INFAMIS TENEBRE. Perhaps it was the pandemic that served as a catalyst for creating this project; I had time for composing, for recording. I had time to think, to develop the image, to define the direction of INFAMIS TENEBRE. Besides that, I listened to dozens of albums at home that I hadn't touched in years. Today, everything has returned to the pre-pandemic times; we are once again in a frantic period, everything has picked up speed, and the rat race is on. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for me to find a moment to reflect; I’ve fallen into a loop.

P: Honestly, I didn’t feel the impact of those insane restrictions very strongly. It was shortly after my return from England, and I had temporarily taken a job as a railway track maintenance worker. It was in a completely remote area, surrounded by meadows, forests, and streams, where I’d sit down with my lunch and spend more time relaxing than actually working. There were hardly any people around, except for the occasional hikers who, in such isolated places, walked without masks and behaved freely.

So, it turned out that during the pandemic restrictions, I personally had a lot of freedom, and I’m glad it worked out that way. I hope it never comes back. In my opinion, the pandemic restrictions caused more harm than the virus itself.

16. What’s your personal boundary beyond which you won’t accept a performer?

P: As a vocalist, any kind of fake live vocals is an unforgivable crime for me. I’ve always preferred listening to authentic, imperfect performances, because if it’s done straight from the heart, the artistic connection between the artist and the listener remains incredibly strong. I feel saddened when I see the idols of today’s youth performing entire concerts with autotune, and no one seems to mind. I don’t get it, I don’t understand it, and I don’t want to. Well, actually, I do understand it. It’s just that the widespread acceptance of artificiality stems from a decline in understanding the fundamental properties of art—its purpose and its value.

I can confidently say that my boundary revolves around respect for the phenomenon of Art. I will never lump it into a category labeled “mindless entertainment".

I: For me, it is unacceptable to rely on technology when composing music. That is a boundary I will never cross. I consider myself an artist, a creator, a composer, and if someone commissions music to be composed by AI, they cannot call themselves a composer. I feel a certain unease, and this is a situation that angers me. When I listen to an album, I believe that it was recorded and composed by musicians. The human element is very important to me; it must have a soul. Art without a soul is not art.

17. What bothers you about the local scene?

P: What concerns and worries me a bit is the issue with the scene in general, not just locally. I used to run a 'zine myself, and between 2002 and 2004, I published three issues. I remember how connecting with bands gave me energy and motivation. Maybe it was naive, but I felt a sense of mission, like I was contributing my small part to promoting music I considered valuable. Importantly, I never ignored anyone who reached out, and neither did my fellow editors. There was more respect back then, even toward less popular bands.

Today, I feel like it’s different. Editors are overwhelmed with such a massive volume of submissions that, inevitably, many have to be ignored. It’s neither pleasant nor ideal, but what can you do? Once again, it comes back to the problem of overstimulation.

18. Which local/foreign event is the best for you and why?

I: I very often attend various concerts and festivals. I love it; I adore live music, the contact with people and artists. There are many events that I really enjoy, especially the Wroclaw Industrial Festival and the Temple of Silence Festival – both festivals are organized by people who love music. They have an atmosphere that I like the most. I really enjoyed the Slovak Festival Hradby Samoty – very friendly people, great sound quality, and fantastic organization. In addition, I often go to different other concerts, for example, I love the band WARDRUNA, and as soon as I see a concert of theirs, I go there. I attend metal concerts and am always present at concerts happening in my city (Grudziądz) or in nearby cities (Toruń, Bydgoszcz).

P: Lately, I’ve found myself attending literary gatherings of prose writers and poets more often than concerts, and these were very intimate events. When it comes to concerts, I think I also prefer those in small clubs because of the better atmosphere. It’s been a while since I’ve been to one, though—I’ve had other things on my mind.

19. What do you think is the common denominator that connects artists from different genres/scenes, and what divides them?

P: Very good question, as it directly concerns INFAMIS TENEBRE. Generally, the issue is quite simple—the more musically developed a person is, the fewer problems they have collaborating with musicians of different tastes. The best albums, even those that adhere to strict genre conventions, are usually created by people with a wide range of preferences. These exotic preferences don’t necessarily have to be present in the final work, but a certain higher level of compositional finesse is undeniable in the works of creators who are open to diverse music.

To say that Infamis has a knack for experimenting is an understatement. Daring to create an album rooted in the dungeon synth aesthetic while combining it with a vocal style completely alien to the genre is an act of bravery. It’s mutual bravery, the results of which fed our crazy souls with the precious honey of creating something authentic, without regard for genre boundaries. It was a magnificent experience, one worth repeating. At this point, it’s worth recalling the quote from Plato that inspired our album: "He, who is not touched by madness, will not enter the temple of the Muses."

As for the second part of the question—what divides artists—there’s no need to overthink it. The reasons can vary greatly, and they’re almost always equally embarrassing: inflated egos, narrow-mindedness, and so on.

20. Which sound (studio, album/band), artwork (album cover), and music video from the local scene have impressed you the most recently?

P: Not very recently, but one standout example is the recent release of Nirnaeth: Xperimenta – Neskoro V Novembri from 2023. While the title is in Slovak, the album itself is the work of a Polish artist. Descriptions like ambient, chillwave, and dark jazz perfectly capture the mood of this music. On a different note, closer to traditional dungeon synth but in a distinctly minimalist form, I recently listened to Runa - Dark Clouds Over Middle-Earth. This project, created by a Tolkien enthusiast from Piotrków Trybunalski, beautifully merges the raw, austere aesthetics of the genre with the atmosphere of caves, grottos, and moss-covered stones. I could say much the same about a recently acquired release, Alembik – Krypta, another solid Polish representative of the genre. While the dungeon synth scene in Poland is relatively small, I must admit that I enjoy much of what it produces. We have talented, sensitive artists.

I should apologize for mentioning albums that are nearly two years old now, but for me, “recent” releases cover the past decade. Time flies, and I don’t always have the opportunity to follow developments closely. Lastly, I’d like to mention the debut of the project chinkA – Trzecie Emocje, representing feminine energy on the Polish scene with its abstract nihilist aesthetic.

I: I will respond very similarly here because the album by the NIRNAETH project is also very important to me and shows how well this project is doing. I really like the CD by the ALEMBIK project – it’s authentic, in the good old dungeon synth style. Among Polish bands, I often listen to the mini-album “Trzy Siostry” by WĘDROWCY TUŁACZE ZBIEGI – great music and a very good cover; it's material from a few years ago, but I often return to it. I've also been listening to THAT’S HOW I FIGHT’s “Movement Three” for a few weeks now – it’s also very interesting music with a fantastic cover, and you can also find the music video for “THAT'S HOW I FIGHT '28'” on YouTube.

As for music videos, very few projects make them; among Polish projects, music videos are most often released by industrial and electronic bands, like “FRETT 'End Beginning'” or “LARMO feat PACHU - FLAT BREATH.” However, on YouTube, you can also find the live concert video “Alembik - 'Przyjdź Królestwo' live.”

Recently, I listened to the OWLSILAR GATE tape “The Cursed Mountain,” which I received in Bratislava, and I like its somewhat dark ambient atmosphere. I wasn't familiar with this project before, nor do I know its earlier recordings, but this gloomy material “The Cursed Mountain” is interesting. I listen to music every day, often checking out new releases on YouTube and Bandcamp in the dungeon synth scene – there’s an astonishing amount, and the quality is very good.

21. A music album, book, film, series, video game, tattoo studio, and beer that you recommend.

P: video game

I have a soft spot for old games from the Ultima series, with the strongest nostalgia for Ultima Underworld 2. I played it passionately in my youth, though I only managed to complete it a few years ago. This year, I played a bit of Ultima 3: Exodus, but I'm in a tough spot because there's a bug in the algorithm preventing ships from spawning on the map, leaving me stranded on land. The thought of starting all over again pains me, but I might give it another shot.

I'm also a fan of the Spy vs. Spy trilogy on the Atari 8-bit and really enjoy old arcade titles like The Punisher or Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. There's another Atari 8-bit game I want to mention because, in hindsight, it feels like it resonates well with the themes of the INFAMIS TENEBRE album. That game is Feud from 1987, which revolves around a conflict between two shamans from the same village. You had to wander through various areas, including forests and cemeteries, searching for herbs to create potions and poisons to defeat your opponent. The atmosphere of this game was incredible for its time.

Book:

Somehow, in 2024, I managed to read quite a lot of books, and I’d like to say a few words about two of them.

The first one is Chrobaczki (The Little Beetles, 1989) by Stanisław Srokowski, arguably the first avant-garde novel I’ve ever read. In a way, I fell in love with this book because it brought me months of strange, existential reflections. It’s a book where the author’s language can be considered one of the main characters. The multifaceted nature of this magical work perfectly set the tone for me while I was working on the INFAMIS TENEBRE's album, as I happened to be reading it during that period.

"Srokowski is drawn to the ineffable aspects of the human condition, attempting to break free from the constraints of language and, in fact, from the limitations of codified human thought as a whole. He seeks modes of perceiving the world that go beyond concepts, almost metaphysical in nature..." – this is just a brief excerpt from the description on the back cover. Chrobaczki is a thoroughly mad and intellectually demanding book that requires some philosophical preparation from the reader. Precisely because of its intellectual depth, it was marginalized by so-called Polish literary criticism. Critics threw up their hands, unsure what to make of it. Meanwhile, it’s a work I can confidently recommend to all seekers of transgressive literature with an Indiana Jones streak—only here, you don’t read about Indiana Jones; you become him yourself.

The second book that made a huge impression on me this year is a short novella titled The Willows (1907) by Algernon Blackwood. It is a masterpiece of horror that contains not a drop of blood or any cheap theatrics. Blackwood's mastery is so profound that he can send shivers down your spine merely by describing the setting in which the characters find themselves—a place filled with strange willows and a menacing atmosphere. This book generates vivid imagery that stays with the reader forever.

It’s also worth mentioning that this novella has received a stunning hardcover edition thanks to the efforts of Krzysztof "Korsarz" Biliński, who runs Wydawnictwo IX—a publishing house in my country specializing in books, primarily in the weird fiction genre. Krzysztof tirelessly spreads high culture by publishing such gems, and he is also known for his past work as an experimental musician, heavily inspired by diverse literature. His older projects have achieved a somewhat cult status in certain circles, and I’d like to mention their names for the benefit of the most curious among your readers: Egaheer, Korsarz and Vedymini.

Music album

Asmorod's Hysope. For me, this is the so-called ultimate dark ambient album—absolute perfection. Not only musically but also in terms of helping me woo romantic partners. The track "Enlightening Fire" from this album served as a soundtrack for sweet-talking a few women, quite successfully. It's been a very useful album in my life.

Beer:

Romper Extreme 12%. Whoever hasn't tasted this potion of bitterness doesn't know life. An abomination to the taste buds, the instigator of existential pain. Simply magnificent.

Film:

There is plenty of good entertainment cinema in Poland, but taking this opportunity, I would like to mention something that doesn’t get enough attention. Namely, the film Wołyń (Volhynia) by Wojciech Smarzowski, released in 2016. This film sparked significant controversy in my country due to its lack of political correctness. As we know, in these post-truth times, the truth itself is unpopular—especially historical truth and its consequences.

During World War II, the Polish borderlands experienced three waves of genocide: German, Russian, and Ukrainian. The latter, in particular, was marked by extraordinary, inhuman cruelty. The Germans shot people in the head and moved on; the Russians displayed some signs of barbarity. But the fate of those who fell into the hands of Ukrainians was truly horrific. Impaling children on fences, skinning hands as if removing gloves, cutting open pregnant women's bellies and scalding the fetuses with boiling water, or smearing victims' intestines with honey to attract pigs to devour Poles alive—these are just four examples out of over 300 methods of elaborate torture perfected by our neighbors.

The Ukrainian genocide took place in Poland between 1939 and 1947 across seven provinces, and the title Wołyń serves as a symbolic reference to the most infamous point of this tragedy. A tragedy that today’s political leaders would prefer to forget. Polish children are no longer taught about it in schools, as the education system has erased these events from history books. This is because the Polish government—regardless of political affiliation, whether left or right—has for years been the same venomous group of thieves and moral cripples, filled with contempt for their own nation. Considering that the greatest Polish artists, brilliant writers, and scientists (including the inventor of the internet) hailed from the Kresy region, it can confidently be judged that the genocide there was akin to an amputation of the heart of my country's culture. Sadly, the lamentable state of contemporary Polish culture is a living aftermath of those events.

I encourage anyone interested in historical truth to watch Wołyń. Director Wojciech Smarzowski displayed immense courage in creating this work, going against the tide and defying the mainstream.

Tattoo studio

I don't have any tattoos. You don't put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari.

22. Vinyl/CD/MC?

I: I prefer all formats.

P: CD.

23. Is there someone on the local scene (active or inactive musician) with whom you’d like to read an interview on Jablká ďaleko od stromu?

I: ALEMBIK, NIRNAETH, MCHY I POROSTY

P: Same here, but I'll add RUNA, chinkA, XAK (head of the revived FLUTTERING DRAGON label).

24. A motto/favorite quote or message to end with.

P: The album Widma closes with a confession from a shaman who declares, "My name is the Earth's last breath." On one hand, this reflects the animistic nature of the shaman, but on the other, it is also a geographical concept. The strong sense of identity among archaic tribes is a fact of profound significance. I will conclude this reflection with a quote from another book by Stanisław Srokowski:

"The greatest works of European and world culture have grown out of specific soil. They have deep roots in a particular place. They draw on specific environmental realities, customs, language, fashion, ways of thinking, breathing, and seeing of a concrete, not abstract, time. The sources of truth spring forth with great strength from national tradition." Stanisław Srokowski, The Angel of Destruction (2001).

===========================================================================

1. Kto ste, čo robíte a čo vás v týchto dňoch najviac zaujíma?

Som hudobník, autor a skladateľ hudby. Milujem prácu s hudobnými nástrojmi, zbieram nástroje z rôznych častí sveta a prevádzkujem dielňu na výrobu akustických nástrojov s názvom „Industrial Sounds“, kde vyrábam búrkové bubny (spring drums).

V rokoch 2001 až 2003 sme hrávali v miestnych kluboch, kde sme predvádzali vlastné skladby a covery kapiel Iron Maiden a Mercyful Fate.

I: V 90. rokoch som hral v rôznych metalových kapelách. V rokoch 1998 až 2020 som viedol hudobné vydavateľstvo Beast Of Prey. Pôsobil som v mnohých rôznych hudobných projektoch. Okrem INFAMIS TENEBRE sa aktívne zapájam do projektu VOICES OF THE COSMOS a som zakladateľ projektu ELECTRIC URANUS. Už 25 rokov hrám na klávesových nástrojoch (klávesy a syntetizátory) a na bicích.

3. Opíšte svoju najnovšiu výbavu (nástroj, vybavenie, efekty) a čo vás na nej najviac zaujalo.

I: Používam veľmi veľa nástrojov. Mojimi hlavnými nástrojmi sú Korg Triton, Korg Nautilus a Roland Gaia, ako aj celý rad akustických nástrojov: rámové bubny, šamanské bubny, bandury, pochodové tympany, rohy, trúbky, zvony atď. Milujem prácu s reálnymi nástrojmi; na skladanie nepoužívam počítač ani VST pluginy. Samozrejme, používam efektové pedále, napríklad Line 6 M13 a Lexicon Reverbs, spolu s vhodným predzosilňovačom a Lexicon audio rozhraním. Vždy skladám a nahrávam všetko pomocou nástrojov.

Vďaka štedrosti thrash metalových kamarátov (Burza a Robal – veľké vďaka im!) som si tam mohol vziať laptop a tráviť čas nacvičovaním fráz, nahrávaním, dolaďovaním a podobne. Bolo to skvelé miesto a skvelá spoločnosť.

I: Hudbu som nahral vo svojom domácom štúdiu, Hell House. Neskôr som urobil finálny mix a poslal ho do profesionálneho masteringového štúdia www.szszwarc.pl.

5. Čo vás najviac ovplyvňuje pri tvorbe hudby?

P: Ťažké životné situácie, ktoré si vyžadujú odolnosť a pevnú sústredenosť, poskytujú viac než dosť inšpirácie na to, aby som si občas overil, či som stále citlivý človek. A ja som veľmi citlivý.

Tvorím vždy, keď mám v sebe príliš veľa hnevu a šialenstva.

6. Ktorú skladbu a text z vašej kapely by ste vyzdvihli?

9. Podeľte sa o zaujímavé príbehy z života vašej kapely. Ako ďaleko ste na rebríku dekadencie?

I: Mám dva príbehy súvisiace s INFAMIS TENEBRE. Robil som to tri dni a bolo to neúspešné. Nahrával som seba, ako chodím cez kríky, kopem palicami do kôry stromov a zachytávam rôzne zvuky. Posledný deň, keď som dokončoval svoje nahrávky a vracal sa domov, som počul vtáky, rýchlo som bežal a podarilo sa mi ich nahrať. Po niekoľkých dňoch neúspechu, keď som už mal mnoho iných nahrávok, som konečne zachytil vtáky. :)

Aby som pobavil majiteľa skúšobne, často som si so sebou nosil batoh plný lacných, podpriemerných, „lowlife“ pív, starostlivo vybraných z malých obchodov, kde sa dali nájsť takéto „skvosty“. Vysokoalkoholické, nechutne zlé pivá najhoršieho druhu sa stali súčasťou procesu nahrávania „Widma,“ trochu ako akt komického masochizmu. Romper Extreme 12 % a pár ďalších značiek, myslím, dokonale zapadlo do myšlienky dekadencie. A áno, tieto som naozaj pil viac než raz.

Čo sa týka projektu VOICES OF THE COSMOS, plánujeme turné na rok 2025 a prebiehajú diskusie o koncertoch.

Bolo to niečo magické – keď som otvoril výťah a videl hrubú obálku trčiacu zo schránky, cítil som skutočné vzrušenie. Bolo to úžasné.

To dalo vzniknúť tzv.

Bolo to na úplne odľahlom mieste, obklopené lúkami, lesmi a potokmi, kde som si sadol k obedu a viac času som trávil odpočinkom než prácou.

Vždy som uprednostňoval autentické, nedokonalé vystúpenia, pretože ak sú podané priamo zo srdca, umelecké spojenie medzi interpretom a poslucháčom zostáva neuveriteľne silné. Som smutný, keď vidím, že dnešní idoly mládeže predvádzajú celé koncerty s autotunom, a nikomu to neprekáža. Nerozumiem tomu, nechápem to a ani nechcem. Teda, vlastne chápem. Široko akceptovaná umelosť pramení z poklesu porozumenia základných vlastností umenia – jeho účelu a hodnoty.

Mojou hranicou je jednoznačne rešpekt k fenoménu umenia. Nikdy ho nezaradím do kategórie „bezduchá zábava“.

Opäť sa to vracia k problému nadmernej stimulácie.

Milujem to; zbožňujem živú hudbu, kontakt s ľuďmi a interpretmi.

P: V poslednej dobe som častejšie navštevoval literárne stretnutia prozaikov a básnikov než koncerty, a boli to veľmi intímne podujatia.

Dôvody môžu byť rôzne a takmer vždy rovnako trápne: nafúknuté egá, úzkoprsosť a podobne.

20. Aký zvuk (štúdio, album/skupina), umelecké dielo (obal albumu) a hudobné video z miestnej scény vás nedávno najviac zaujali?

Tento projekt vytvorený Tolkienovým nadšencom z Piotrkówa Trybunalského krásne spája surovú, strohú estetiku žánru s atmosférou jaskýň, grott a machom pokrytých kameňov. Mohol by som povedať to isté o nedávno získanom albume Alembik – Krypta, ďalšom silnom poľskom zástupcovi tohto žánru.

Čas letí a nie vždy mám možnosť sledovať vývoj.

Už niekoľko týždňov počúvam aj „Movement Three“ od THAT’S HOW I FIGHT – je to tiež veľmi zaujímavá hudba s fantastickým obalom, a na YouTube si môžete pozrieť aj videoklip „THAT'S HOW I FIGHT '28'“.

Nedávno som počúval kazetu OWLSILAR GATE „The Cursed Mountain“, ktorú som dostal v Bratislave, a páči sa mi jej temná ambientná atmosféra.

Kniha:
V roku 2024 som nejako zvládol prečítať dosť kníh, a rád by som povedal pár slov o dvoch z nich.

Počas druhej svetovej vojny zažilo poľské pohraničie tri vlny genocídy: nemeckú, ruskú a ukrajinskú. Posledná menovaná bola obzvlášť poznačená mimoriadnou, neľudskou krutosťou. Nemci ľudí strieľali do hlavy a pokračovali ďalej; Rusi prejavovali určité známky barbarstva.

22. Vinyl/CD/MC?

I: Preferujem všetky formáty.

P: CD.

I: ALEMBIK, NIRNAETH, MCHY I POROSTY

P: Súhlasím, ale pridám ešte RUNA, chinkA a XAK (vedúci oživeného labelu FLUTTERING DRAGON).

„Najväčšie diela európskej a svetovej kultúry vyrástli z konkrétnej pôdy. Majú hlboké korene v určitom mieste. Čerpajú zo špecifických environmentálnych realít, zvykov, jazyka, módy, spôsobov myslenia, dýchania a videnia konkrétneho, nie abstraktného času. Pramene pravdy vyvierajú veľkou silou z národnej tradície.“

Stanisław Srokowski, Anjel zničenia (2001).
