1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?
I'm Schnee, and I'm currently recording some tracks for other bands now that I've finally made my recording studio official. What interests me most right now is playing the drums, as I didn't think I'd see any progress in that area. But I was wrong.
2. I recently came across ARA through two strong sources: a JDØS interview with C.A.M.O., where the band spoke very highly about your music and working with you, Schnee, and through the UK doom reviewers #ninehertz, who placed your latest release "Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft" in their 2025 Top 10 albums. How do you relate to the post-punk and doom metal scenes? Are these references and overlaps something that comes naturally to you?
I believe that music overlap should always be a given. It would probably be boring to listen to the same genre every day. You don't eat cheese every day either ;)
3. Digging deeper, I realized that the first time I heard ARA was on the MC compilation Night Dwellers: Reek of Daylight, where you appear with the track ‘Universum’. I own this cassette, and it was actually one of the impulses that pushed me to start my own cassette label and release doom metal compilations. How did you end up on this metal-punk compilation with Central European bands? Do you know the people behind it, and did it help create any real alliances with bands from that circle?
A friend and bandmate (Dominik P.) helped put this sampler together. ARA was just starting out at the time. I assume the sampler was a big help. And it's always good to support each other.
4. Going even further back - can you share with our readers how and when ARA started? Did you already have a clear artistic vision of what it was going to be?
ARA started out of boredom during the coronavirus pandemic.
Of course, I didn't go into anything completely blindly. But I do leave some things to chance. Overthinking everything isn't always a good thing.
5. ARA is a one-man project - a setup common in dungeon synth and black metal scenes. What led you to work alone musically, even though you’re often praised for your openness and collaboration with other artists? Is "Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft" (‘Completely alone and by my own strength’) a declaration of your own artistic solitude?
In the past, I have made music with many different people, which has helped me progress considerably. However, it is often challenging to collaborate with other musicians. When you are alone, you do not have to make as many compromises and, in my opinion, you can create something much stronger musically and emotionally.
6. It feels like black metal is now being approached by artists from outside its original scene — crust punk, goth, post-punk — whereas in the 1990s black metal itself was expanding outward into other genres. Has the mentality of black metal changed since then? Why do you think this non-traditional nostalgia exists, and what makes black metal so attractive to wider audiences today?
It's hard to reinvent the wheel. I wouldn't consider myself the greatest black metal hero. Black metal is probably not as fringe as it was in the 90s. I would blame the internet for the success or unwanted fame of black metal. Many things are simply perceived or used as buzzwords.
7. While discussing the ’90s, Austria had a few strong atmospheric black metal bands, especially associated with members of Summoning. They were highly influential for the mid-’90s emerging black metal scene in Bratislava as well. What legacy have these bands - even though some are still active - left for the new generation of Austrian musicians, and is there any interaction between them and the younger artistic community?
I have to be honest and say that I've never really been interested in these bands. As a musician, you might think I have a broad knowledge of music, but that's not the case for me.
It generally annoys me when I'm influenced too much.
8. Coming from Vienna, one of the best cities in the world to live in, can you share with us where the darkness in your music comes from? Is it more historical, magical-occult, or urban-decay inspired? Are there specific places in Vienna, Austria, or historical events that you associate with this creative darkness?
I grew up in Lower Austria (fortunately), but in reality I was never a fan of the big city. However, when you live in a small village, you have almost no choice but to move to a larger city, at least if you can't get ahead with your plans in the village. Nevertheless, I still live in Vienna, but certainly not until I'm old and gray. Country life and solitude have definitely had a greater influence on my musical work
9. The songs and album title are in German, carrying references to blood, loneliness, and occult themes - all dark and personal. Could you share with the readers the main lyrical themes and how they come together?
Most of the lyrics are inspired by old plays and a little bit of my own poetry. I don't care much about lyrics. That's why I don't want to make anything up or rhyme anything together here ;)
10. When listening to "Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft", I get spontaneous associations – for example, the track Voller Last gives me a Bathory Hammerheart vibe, and the yelling in Leben evokes scenes from Jarmusch’s Dead Man, with Neil Young’s guitar in the background. Would you agree with these impressions, or am I completely off?
Subconsciously, definitely. Consciously, I wouldn't say I had any inspiration. With ARA, I always just let myself drift somewhere. Something always happens. Just don't be afraid of new things.
11. Who created the artwork for "Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft", and did you face any particular challenges during the recording process?
The layout is by a friend (Zentroz). But most of the pictures are from old art magazines. Or, as in the case of GURRE, from an old erotic magazine... haha... I have a great passion for collecting old weird stuff.
Recording/writing solo music is probably the biggest challenge because it involves a lot of post-production work for me.
Jamming in a band and writing music together is easier. But at the same time, it's also complicated....

12. What feedback have you received and how far in the world did the new album reach?
For an Austrian band, I would rate the feedback as quite acceptable. I once saw that ARA Vinyl is also available in the U.S. But for the most part, I don't attach any importance to negative or positive feedback.
13. What creative plans do you have for 2026?
A new ARA album will be released in 2026. At the same time, I already have some new ideas and, as always, will start recording the new tracks at the end of summer. I hope my drumming will have improved by then.
14. What is the underground scene like in Austria nowadays? Does it still attract the younger generation, or do you see certain genres on the verge of extinction? Which are the interesting bands or events to check out?
I don't think any genre is threatened with extinction. Some things may become quieter, but they always reappear.

1. Kto si, čomu sa venuješ a čo ťa v poslednom období najviac zaujíma?
Som Schnee a momentálne nahrávam skladby pre iné kapely, odkedy som si konečne oficiálne zlegalizoval vlastné nahrávacie štúdio. Najviac ma teraz zaujíma hra na bicie – úprimne som si nemyslel, že v tejto oblasti ešte uvidím nejaký posun. Ale mýlil som sa.
2. Nedávno som sa k ARA dostal cez dva silné impulzy: rozhovor JDØS s C.A.M.O., kde kapela hovorila veľmi pochvalne o vašej hudbe a spolupráci s tebou, Schnee, a tiež cez britských doomových recenzentov #ninehertz, ktorí zaradili vašu poslednú nahrávku „Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft“ do svojho TOP 10 albumov roku 2025. Ako sa vzťahuješ k post-punkovej a doom metalovej scéne? Sú tieto presahy a odkazy niečím prirodzeným?
Myslím si, že žánrové presahy by mali byť samozrejmosťou. Asi by bola nuda počúvať každý deň ten istý žáner. Veď ani syr neješ každý deň ;)
3. Keď som sa ponoril hlbšie, uvedomil som si, že som ARA prvýkrát počul na MC kompilácii Night Dwellers: Reek of Daylight, kde sa objavujete so skladbou „Universum“. Tú kazetu vlastním a bola jedným z impulzov, ktoré ma priviedli k založeniu vlastného kazetového labelu a vydávaniu doom metalových kompilácií. Ako ste sa dostali na túto metal-punkovú kompiláciu so stredoeurópskymi kapelami? Poznáš ľudí, ktorí za ňou stoja, a vytvorili sa vďaka nej nejaké reálne prepojenia?
Túto kompiláciu pomohol dať dokopy kamarát a spoluhráč (Dominik P.). ARA vtedy len začínala. Predpokladám, že sampler bol veľkou pomocou. A vždy je dobré podporovať sa navzájom.
4. Keď sa vrátime ešte viac do minulosti – môžeš sa s čitateľmi podeliť o to, ako a kedy ARA vznikla? Mal si už vtedy jasnú umeleckú predstavu, kam projekt smeruje?
ARA vznikla z nudy počas pandémie koronavírusu.
Samozrejme, nešiel som do toho úplne naslepo. No niektoré veci nechávam na náhodu. Prílišné premýšľanie nie je vždy dobré.
5. ARA je jednočlenný projekt – čo je bežné najmä v dungeon synth a black metalovej scéne. Čo ťa viedlo k sólovej tvorbe, aj keď si známy otvorenosťou a spoluprácami s inými hudobníkmi? Je „Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft“ („Úplne sám a vlastnou silou“) vyjadrením tvojej umeleckej samoty?
V minulosti som tvoril hudbu s mnohými ľuďmi, čo mi veľmi pomohlo v osobnom raste. Spolupráca s inými hudobníkmi je však často náročná. Keď si sám, nemusíš robiť toľko kompromisov a podľa mňa dokážeš vytvoriť niečo oveľa silnejšie – hudobne aj emocionálne.
6. Zdá sa, že dnes sa k black metalu približujú umelci z iných scén – crust punk, goth, post-punk – zatiaľ čo v 90. rokoch to bol skôr black metal, ktorý expandoval smerom von. Zmenila sa podľa teba mentalita black metalu? Prečo podľa teba existuje táto „netradičná nostalgia“ a čím je black metal dnes príťažlivý pre širšie publikum?
Je ťažké znovu vynájsť koleso. Nepovažujem sa za nejakého veľkého black metalového hrdinu. Black metal už pravdepodobne nie je taký okrajový žáner, akým bol v 90. rokoch. Za jeho úspech – alebo nechcenú slávu – by som vinil internet. Mnohé veci sú dnes jednoducho vnímané alebo používané ako buzzwordy.
7. Keď už hovoríme o 90. rokoch – Rakúsko malo niekoľko silných atmosférických black metalových kapiel, často spojených s členmi Summoning, ktoré výrazne ovplyvnili aj bratislavskú scénu polovice 90. rokov. Aký odkaz tieto kapely zanechali novej generácii rakúskych hudobníkov a existuje medzi nimi a mladšou scénou nejaký kontakt?
Úprimne musím povedať, že tieto kapely ma nikdy príliš nezaujímali. Ako hudobník by si si mohol myslieť, že mám široký hudobný prehľad, ale u mňa to tak nie je.
Všeobecne ma dosť irituje, keď som príliš ovplyvňovaný.
8. Viedeň patrí medzi najlepšie mestá na život – odkiaľ teda pramení temnota vo vašej hudbe? Je skôr historická, okultná, magická alebo inšpirovaná mestským rozpadom? Sú nejaké konkrétne miesta alebo historické udalosti, ktoré si s touto temnotou spájaš?
Vyrastal som v Dolnom Rakúsku (našťastie) a veľké mesto mi nikdy veľmi nesadlo. Keď však žiješ v malej dedine, často nemáš inú možnosť, než sa presťahovať do väčšieho mesta – aspoň ak sa chceš posunúť ďalej. Stále žijem vo Viedni, ale určite nie navždy. Vidiecky život a samota mali na moju tvorbu oveľa väčší vplyv.
9. Texty aj názov albumu sú v nemčine a nesú odkazy na krv, samotu a okultné motívy – sú temné a osobné. Môžeš priblížiť hlavné lyrické témy a to, ako do seba zapadajú?
Väčšina textov je inšpirovaná starými divadelnými hrami a trochu aj mojou vlastnou poéziou. Texty ma príliš nezaujímajú. Preto tu ani nechcem niečo umelo vymýšľať alebo rýmovať ;)
10. Pri počúvaní „Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft“ mám spontánne asociácie – napríklad skladba Voller Last mi evokuje Bathory z obdobia Hammerheart a krik v Leben mi pripomína scény z Jarmuschovho Dead Man s gitarou Neila Younga v pozadí. Sú tieto dojmy blízko pravde, alebo som úplne mimo?
Podvedome určite. Vedome by som nepovedal, že som mal konkrétne inšpirácie. Pri ARA sa vždy len nechávam niekam unášať. Vždy sa niečo stane. Netreba sa báť nových vecí.
11. Kto vytvoril artwork k albumu „Mutterseelenallein und aus eigener Kraft“ a čelil si počas nahrávania nejakým špecifickým výzvam?
Layout robil kamarát (Zentroz). Väčšina obrázkov pochádza zo starých umeleckých časopisov – alebo v prípade GURRE zo starého erotického magazínu… haha. Mám veľkú vášeň pre zbieranie starých, divných vecí.
Nahrávanie a písanie sólovej hudby je asi najväčšia výzva, najmä kvôli množstvu postprodukcie.
Jamovanie v kapele a spoločné skladanie je jednoduchšie – no zároveň aj komplikovanejšie…
12. Aké ohlasy album dostal a kam až sa hudba ARA dostala?
Na rakúsku kapelu by som odozvu hodnotil ako celkom slušnú. Raz som videl, že vinyl ARA je dostupný aj v USA. Vo všeobecnosti však nepripisujem veľký význam ani pozitívnym, ani negatívnym reakciám.
13. Aké máš tvorivé plány na rok 2026?
V roku 2026 vyjde nový album ARA. Zároveň mám už teraz nové nápady a ako vždy začnem nahrávať nové skladby koncom leta. Dúfam, že sa mi dovtedy zlepší hra na bicie.
14. Ako dnes vnímaš undergroundovú scénu v Rakúsku? Priťahuje stále mladú generáciu, alebo vidíš niektoré žánre na pokraji zániku? Ktoré kapely či udalosti by si odporučil sledovať?
Nemyslím si, že by nejaký žáner bol ohrozený zánikom. Niektoré veci možno utíchnu, ale vždy sa vrátia.
