Kult Petra Steela (RIP) žije dodnes a rozvetvuje sa do rôznych hudobných podôb. Na ducha a odkaz tvorby Type O Negative sa snažili nadviazať bývalí spoluhráči prakticky hneď po jeho smrti – už v roku 2010 Sal Abruscato so svojím projektom A Pale Horse Named Death a debutom And Hell Will Follow Me. O pár rokov neskôr „dvojičky“ Kenny Hickey a Johnny Kelly rozbehli spoločné projekty Silvertomb a Sun Don’t Shine, ktoré sú vlastne pokračovaním ich Type O „bočáku“ Seventh Void z roku 2009. Na oživenie kultu Petrovej prvej zásadnej kapely Carnivore, ktorá v 80. rokoch hrala postapokalyptický thrash/crossover, sme si však počkali až do roku 2017.
V tom čase dal dokopy tribute kapelu Carnivore A.D. pôvodný bubeník a blízky priateľ Petra Steela Louie Beato, ktorý si prizval ďalšieho člena z pôvodnej zostavy – kontroverzného gitaristu Marca Piovanettiho (momentálne vo väzbe) – a dlhoročného člena brooklynského HC/thrash undergroundu s presahmi do horror/goth rocku Barona Misuracu. Barona vnímam zhruba od polovice 90. rokov vďaka jeho goth kapele Vasaria, ale aj preto, že sa tento Brooklynčan s vlasmi po kolená vždy svojím spôsobom podobal na Petra Steela – hoci hudobne medzi sebou nemali žiadne priame prepojenie.
Carnivore A.D. v rokoch 2017 – 2022 hrali živé vystúpenia výlučne s repertoárom pôvodných Carnivore z 80. rokov. Po odchode Piovanettiho a Beata však do kapely nastúpil ďalší člen Vasarie – gitarista Chuck Lenihan – a nový bubeník Joe Cangelosi, známy z 80s thrash metalovej kapely Whiplash, ale aj z albumu Kreator – Cause for Conflict (1995). Nanovo zostavený Carnivore A.D. sa rozhodol otvoriť novú kapitolu svojej existencie a – s požehnaním zakladajúceho člena Louieho Beata – konečne začal aj s písaním vlastnej tvorby.
Koncom marca 2026 vydávajú Carnivore A.D. na nemeckom labeli Apostasy Records úplne nové EP Transmutation. Kým Carnivore v roku 1987 umiestnili na svoj posledný album Retaliation postavy v chemických maskách a rakety smerujúce k oblohe, o necelých štyridsať rokov neskôr prichádza Carnivore A.D. s artworkom vojaka v plynovej maske, rádioaktívnymi symbolmi, zdevastovanou krajinou a troma raketami nasmerovanými niekam na východ.
EP začína minútovým prológom, kde sa hlboký hlas pýta „Are you ready?“, nasledovaný pomalou zostupnou melódiou hranou na výrazne väzbiacej gitare, base a bicích. Komu v žilách koluje 0 negatívna krvná skupina, tomu je jasné, že intro odkazuje na „gravitačné konštanty“ Petra Steela – tentoraz však v bezklávesovom prevedení.
Skladba Transmutation začína zvukom sirén a výkrikom „Do you believe in revelation?“ s výrazným „R“, po ktorom nasleduje rýchly riffing, vokálne frázovanie a dvojkopáky. Skladba mení tempá, je tu veľa sólovania, väzbenia, basa je výrazná, bicie idú naplno, vokál kričí, šepká, hrozí… kvality hudobníkov sú zrejmé a skladba funguje výborne.
Ďalšia skladba I Stand Alone začína pomalším sekaným motívom a vokálom, ktorý mi vyvoláva spomienky na debut Vasarie – skladbu napísal Chuck Lenihan a jeho rukopis je cítiť. Je nám servírovaný gotický thrash metal – áno, prvýkrát počujem niečo podobné a baví ma to. Social Decomposition je návrat k rýchlosti a jednoduchosti – kombinácii, v ktorej opäť vyniknú inštrumentálne schopnosti hudobníkov.
Posledná skladba Mine Is the Hand je opäť v strednom tempe, s výrazným riffom, ktorý prechádza do väzbených plôch tvoriacich silnú atmosféru. Vyzdvihujem pasáž, ktorá až panterovským spôsobom oddeľuje hlboký basový riffing a vysoko položenú sólujúcu gitaru bez zbytočných zdvojených skreslení. Čistá, precízna hra – človek počuje každý tón, nič sa neschová. Záverečný motív je absolútne hutný death-thrash z 80. rokov s vokálom ako od nasratého vojaka chemickej roty, ktorý na vás reve povely z plynovej masky.
Sedemnásťminútové EP Transmutation ubehne veľmi rýchlo. Napadne pri ňom veľa vecí, ale záverečné myšlienky patria tomu, že odkaz Petra Steela je stále živý a skupinke okolo Barona Misuracu sa ho podarilo zmutovať do novej formy – konzistentnej s pôvodnou Petrovou kapelou, no zároveň modernejšej a inštrumentálne vyzretejšej. Počúvať nový materiál Carnivore A.D. je ako pozrieť si nového Mad Maxa v IMAXe a pritom s láskou spomínať na staré VHSky s Melom Gibsonom.

The cult of Peter Steele (RIP) is still alive today, branching out into various musical forms. Former bandmates tried to carry on the spirit and legacy of Type O Negative almost immediately after his death — as early as 2010, when Sal Abruscato launched A Pale Horse Named Death with the debut And Hell Will Follow Me. A few years later, the “twins” Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly started their joint projects Silvertomb and Sun Don’t Shine, essentially continuing the direction of their Type O side-project Seventh Void from 2009. However, we had to wait until 2017 for a revival of the cult surrounding Peter’s first essential band, Carnivore, which in the 1980s played a post-apocalyptic thrash/crossover hybrid.
At that time, original drummer and close friend of Steele, Louie Beato, assembled the tribute band Carnivore A.D.. He brought in another original member — guitarist Marc Piovanetti — along with long-time Brooklyn HC/thrash underground figure with overlaps into horror/goth rock, Baron Misuraca. I’ve been aware of Baron since the mid-90s thanks to his gothic band Vasaria, but also because this Brooklyn native, with his hair down to his knees, always resembled Peter Steele in a way — even though musically they never had any direct overlap.
Between 2017 and 2022, Carnivore A.D. performed live exclusively with material from the original 80s Carnivore catalog. After the departure of Piovanetti and Beato, another Vasaria member — guitarist Chuck Lenihan — joined the band, along with drummer Joe Cangelosi, known from the 80s US thrash band Whiplash and also from Kreator – Cause for Conflict (1995). This reassembled lineup decided to open a new chapter and — with the blessing of founding member Louie Beato — finally began writing original material.
At the end of March 2026, Carnivore A.D. released their new EP Transmutation via Apostasy Records. While Carnivore’s final album Retaliation (1987) featured figures in gas masks and missiles pointing toward the sky, nearly forty years later Carnivore A.D. presents artwork depicting a soldier in a gas mask, radioactive symbols, a devastated landscape, and three missiles aimed somewhere to the east.
The EP opens with a one-minute prologue where a deep voice asks, “Are you ready?”, followed by a slow descending melody played on heavily feedback-drenched guitar, bass, and drums. Anyone with Type O negative blood running through their veins will immediately recognize this intro as a reference to Peter Steele’s “gravitational constants” — this time without keyboards.
The track Transmutation begins with sirens and the shout “Do you believe in revelation?” delivered with a pronounced rolling “R”, followed by fast riffing, vocal phrasing, and double bass drumming. The song shifts tempos frequently, with plenty of soloing, feedback, a prominent bass presence, relentless drums, and vocals that scream, whisper, and threaten. The musicianship is undeniable, and the track works extremely well.
I Stand Alone opens with a slower, choppy motif and vocals that remind me of Vasaria’s debut — the track was written by Chuck Lenihan, and his signature is clearly audible. What we get here is gothic thrash metal — something I’m hearing for the first time, and I genuinely enjoy it. Social Decomposition returns to speed and simplicity — a combination in which the band’s instrumental skills once again stand out.
The final track, Mine Is the Hand, returns to a mid-tempo pace with a strong riff that transitions into feedback-driven textures, creating a dense atmosphere. A standout moment is a passage that, in a very Pantera-like way, separates deep bass riffing from high, lead guitar lines without unnecessary layers of distortion. Clean, precise playing — you can hear every note, nothing gets buried. The closing motif is a crushing 80s-style death-thrash section, with vocals resembling an enraged chemical warfare soldier shouting commands at you from inside a gas mask.
The 17-minute Transmutation EP flies by quickly. It sparks many thoughts, but in the end, it confirms that Peter Steele’s legacy is still alive — and that the group around Baron Misuraca has managed to mutate it into a new form: consistent with the original band, yet more modern and instrumentally refined. Listening to new material from Carnivore A.D. is like watching a new Mad Max in IMAX while fondly reminiscing about the old VHS tapes with Mel Gibson.
