1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?
Hi, I'm Sven, the singer of the band Negative Slug. I also work in construction in an asphalt laboratory, and what interests me the most these days is when the general madness in the world will stop.
2. Which bands were you in before you formed Negative Slug, and how did the current lineup come together?
Before Negative Slug, we played in Grom (Grom02 Grom Ritual), ATF, KLP, Šljam, K3P, Duskburn, Pogavranjen, Garbage Display, Bliss of Corpse, Reefer Madness, Široke Ulice, Mudri, Decomposing Void... Neven, Marijan, and Bunc wanted to have a sludge band more for jamming, and I later jumped in, and everything rolled into something much more serious than planned. Balson later joined instead of Bunc, who went to Ireland.
3. What is your favorite equipment (instruments, amplifiers, effects) for destroying your fans' hearing?
If you ask me, it's our hands, amplifiers from Laney to no-name amplifiers and experimentation. You just need to show up at a concert and feel the energy of Negative Slug.
4. Negative Slug has released three albums and several EPs, singles, and splits. How has the band evolved from the debut EP Negative Slug (2015) to the latest split Chokehold & Protect, and what are the key moments in the band's journey?
From album to album, the idea exists; Neven creates things, and the rest of the band complements his idea either textually or musically. There have been key moments, but every time something was supposed to happen, something else would occur.
5. Your latest album Coprolalia was released last year—I love the album title! Is it a conceptual album in terms of lyrical themes? What message are you trying to convey to the world?
Thank you for the kind words about the title. Well, it could even be a conceptual album if you ask me, regardless of the fact that some lyrics are from me and some from Neven. If you ask me, the message is simple, and that is the state of the human mind (from normal to madness). In the end, it all comes down to the human head; how far we can deviate as people is abnormal.
6. Shortly after that, you released the single Chokehold & Protect—what is it about and how satisfied are you with the result?
C&P, the theme is the general state of the executive authorities, how they would like to talk about security and trust, but in the end, it all comes down to one big zero. The second song is a cover by Come to Grief, we got Terry's blessing to cover it. Everything was recorded live except for the vocals and solo guitar, and we are very satisfied with the result, without any embellishments, it is our true sound.
7. Which song and lyrics from your catalog have special meaning for you and why?
Ufff, there are more, but we will talk about that another time because I could write a novel.
8. What is the band's inclination towards vices, what are your favorites, and is Zagreb a good place to enjoy them, or do you have to travel outside the city for that? Do you have any interesting stories from the band's life that you would like to share with the readers?
As for enjoying vices, we all love the green plant plus various drugs, some more, some less, and the same goes for alcohol; we don't have to travel outside the city for such things, but we have to be careful because legally we are not protected, and the state is just waiting to sanction us. There has been everything you can imagine.
9. What is the doom/sludge scene like in Croatia? Are there local labels, bands, or individuals keeping it alive, or do you consider yourself more a part of the international scene?
The doom/sludge scene is quite substantial with bands, but it all comes down to certain interests, so I'll keep my answer brief; if you don't drop your pants for everyone who offers you something, they will immediately cross you off, at least that's my perspective, making it quite difficult to function. Some of the bands that come to mind are Wizard of Stone Mountain, Lord Drunkalot, Stonebride, Umor, Left to Starve, A gram Trip…
10. Which bands do you enjoy sharing the stage with, and what are your favorite venues to play at?
With anyone who wants to share the stage with us, and the smaller the spaces, the more the energy of the audience and the band merges into one whole.
11. Do you know any bands from Slovakia? What would make you come and play here?
I thought Lvmen was from Slovakia, but I see it's not; I only know that you have a sufficiently large underground scene. As for what would make us come to play for you, it's important that the travel expenses are covered at least to some basic extent, and we could easily agree on the rest. I also assume that the people attending the concert would be more than satisfied with our performance.
12. Which sound (studio, album/band), artwork (album cover), and music video have impressed you the most recently?
Johnny the boy “you” I Iron Monkeys “Spleen & Goad” (we even played the song misantrophizer live twice).
13. Favorite music album, book, movie, series, video game, tattoo studio that you recommend.
Album Burning Witch – Crippled Lucifer

14. Do you think that southern and warm locations are natural breeding grounds for slow, deep, and heavy music? Do you see similarities between NOLA and Zagreb in that regard?
I would rather say that poverty and misery are the connections, and yes, I do see similarities, but I think that when it comes to similarities, we are more like Buzzoven, Grief, Iron Monkey, Fistula, but we definitely have an influence from NOLA as well.
15. Vinyl/CD/MC?
Vinyl, although I love all three media.
16. Ožujsko or Karlovačko?
Karlovačko. Ožujsko used to be good.
17. Is Tara Thaller a big fan or just an ordinary admirer of the band Negative Slug?
Uffff, this question caught me off guard so much that I contacted Dino Jelušić to check if he might have let Tara know, where did you dig this up? Kudos to you. :)
18. Have you seen Eggers' Nosferatu? If so, what did you think of it? What is your favorite horror movie?
I watched it, and I wasn't really impressed; the camera work and shots are okay, but Nosferatu reminds me a bit too much of Attila from Mayhem (at least that's how it seems to me). I preferred The Witch. The first horror that comes to mind is THE SUBSTANCE.
19. Is there someone in the local scene (active or inactive musician) with whom you would like to read an interview on Jablká ďaleko od stromu?
There is Nikola Babić (drummer of Chang FFos who no longer perform).

1. Kto si, čomu sa venuješ a čo ťa v týchto dňoch najviac fascinuje?
Ahoj, volám sa Sven a som spevákom kapely Negative Slug. Civilne pracujem v stavebníctve – konkrétne v asfaltovom laboratóriu. V poslednej dobe ma najviac zaujíma, kedy konečne utíchne to všeobecné šialenstvo, ktoré sa vo svete deje.
2. V ktorých projektoch si pôsobil pred Negative Slug a ako sa zrodila súčasná zostava kapely?
Predtým sme pôsobili v rôznych zoskupeniach ako Grom (Grom02 Grom Ritual), ATF, KLP, Šljam, K3P, Duskburn, Pogavranjen, Garbage Display, Bliss of Corpse, Reefer Madness, Široke Ulice, Mudri, Decomposing Void... Neven, Marijan a Bunc pôvodne rozbehli sludge projekt len ako jamovací výplod. Neskôr som sa pridal ja – a veci sa zrazu začali vyvíjať omnoho vážnejším smerom. Po čase Bunc odišiel do Írska a za bicie sadol Balson.
3. Aké vybavenie používate na vytváranie vášho charakteristického „deštruktívneho“ zvuku?
Ak sa pýtaš mňa – úplne najdôležitejšie sú naše ruky. Používame aparáty rôznych značiek, od Laney až po neznáme no-name kusy. Rovnako dôležité je neustále experimentovanie. Ale najviac energie aj tak pochopíš, až keď prídeš na náš koncert a necháš sa uniesť tým, čo sa deje na pódiu.
4. Negative Slug má za sebou tri albumy, niekoľko EP, singlov a splitov. Ako by si opísal vývoj kapely od debutového EP z roku 2015 po najnovší split Chokehold & Protect?
Od začiatku máme jasnú ideu – Neven prichádza s konceptom a zvyšok kapely ho dotvára, či už hudobne alebo textovo. Počas cesty nás sprevádzalo veľa silných momentov, ale častokrát, keď sa malo udiať niečo zásadné, život priniesol nečakaný zvrat.
5. Váš zatiaľ posledný album Coprolalia vyšiel minulý rok – musím povedať, že ten názov je skvelý! Ide o konceptuálny album? A čo by ste ním chceli svetu povedať?
Ďakujeme! Osobne si myslím, že pokojne môže byť vnímaný ako konceptuálny, aj keď texty pochádzajú odo mňa aj od Nevena. Spája ich téma – skúmanie ľudskej psychiky. Od normálneho stavu až po totálne šialenstvo. Všetko sa to točí okolo hlavy – tá rozhoduje, ako ďaleko sme ako ľudia schopní zájsť. A práve táto deformácia nás fascinuje aj desí zároveň.
6. Krátko po tom ste vypustili singel Chokehold & Protect – o čom je a ako ste s ním spokojní?
C&P je o tom, v akom stave sú výkonné zložky moci – všetci by radi rozprávali o bezpečí a dôvere, ale keď sa to celé rozoberie, zostane len veľká nula. Druhá skladba je cover od Come to Grief, Terry nám dal zelenú, aby sme ju mohli nahrať. Všetko okrem vokálov a sólovej gitary sme nahrali naživo a s výsledkom sme úplne spokojní – bez pozlátok, presne tak ako znie Negative Slug naživo.
7. Ktorá skladba alebo text má pre teba osobitný význam a prečo?
Fúha, tých je viac... ale o tom niekedy nabudúce, lebo to by bol fakt na dlhšie – mohol by som o tom napísať celú knihu.
8. Ako ste na tom s nerestami – máte nejaké obľúbené? A je Záhreb dobrým miestom, kde si ich užiť, alebo za tým treba ísť inde? Máte nejakú vtipnú historku z kapelného života, o ktorú by ste sa chceli podeliť?
Čo si budeme klamať – zelená rastlinka nám je celkom blízka, plus nejaké tie drogy a alkohol, každý podľa chuti. Záhreb úplne stačí, netreba nikam utekať, ale musíme byť opatrní – zákon tu nie je veľmi na našej strane a štát len čaká, kedy môže udierať. No a čo sa týka historiek... ver, že za tie roky sa nazbieralo všeličo.
9. Aká je doom/sludge scéna v Chorvátsku? Fungujú tam labely, kapely, ľudia, čo to ťahajú, alebo sa skôr cítite byť súčasťou širšej, medzinárodnej scény?
Scéna tu je, sú kapely, ale všetko sa často točí okolo kamarátstiev a záujmov. Povedané na rovinu – keď si nechceš stiahnuť gate pre každého, kto ti niečo sľúbi, tak ťa proste vyškrtnú. Aspoň tak to vnímam ja. A preto je niekedy ťažké vôbec fungovať. Ale sú tu fajn kapely ako Wizard of Stone Mountain, Lord Drunkalot, Stonebride, Umor, Left to Starve, A gram Trip…
10. S ktorými kapelami radi zdieľate pódium a aké sú vaše obľúbené miesta na hranie?
S kýmkoľvek, kto má chuť zdieľať pódium s nami. A čím menší priestor, tým lepšie – energia publika a kapely sa vtedy najviac prepojí a vytvorí jeden intenzívny celok.
11. Poznáte nejaké kapely zo Slovenska? Čo by vás presvedčilo, aby ste prišli zahrať k nám?
Myslel som si, že Lvmen sú zo Slovenska, ale vidím, že nie. Viem len to, že u vás existuje dosť silná undergroundová scéna. A čo sa týka toho, čo by nás presvedčilo – úplne stačí, ak by boli pokryté aspoň základné cestovné náklady, zvyšok už by sme si dohodli. Som si istý, že ľudia, ktorí by na ten koncert prišli, by rozhodne neodchádzali sklamaní.
12. Ktorý zvuk (štúdio, album/kapela), obal albumu alebo videoklip ťa v poslednej dobe najviac zaujal?
Johnny the Boy – You a Iron Monkey – Spleen & Goad (song Misantrophizer sme dokonca dvakrát hrali naživo).
13. Obľúbený hudobný album, kniha, film, seriál, videohra, tetovacie štúdio, ktoré by si odporučil?

Seriál: Zóna súmraku (The Twilight Zone)
Tatérske štúdio: je ich viacero, nedá sa vybrať len jedno
14. Myslíš si, že južné a teplé lokality prirodzene vytvárajú prostredie pre pomalú, hutnú a ťažkú hudbu? Vidíš v tomto smere podobnosť medzi NOLA a Záhrebom?
Skôr by som povedal, že spojivom sú chudoba a mizéria. A áno, vidím tam podobnosti, ale ak by som mal hovoriť o tom, s čím sa najviac stotožňujeme, tak sú to skôr kapely ako Buzzoven, Grief, Iron Monkey, Fistula… aj keď vplyv NOLA tam určite tiež je.
15. Vinyl/CD/MC?
Vinyl, aj keď všetky tri formáty mám veľmi rád.
16. Ožujsko alebo Karlovačko?
Karlovačko. Ožujsko bývalo kedysi dobré.
17. Je Tara Thaller veľkou fanúšičkou, alebo len bežnou obdivovateľkou kapely Negative Slug?
Ufff, touto otázkou si ma úplne zaskočil, až som napísal Dinovi Jelušićovi, či by nedal vedieť Tare – kde si na to prišiel? Klobúk dole. :)
18. Videl si Eggersovho Nosferatu? Ak áno, ako sa ti páčil? A aký je tvoj obľúbený horor?
Videl, ale neohúrilo ma to. Kamera a zábery boli fajn, ale ten Nosferatu mi až príliš pripomína Attilu z Mayhem (aspoň mne osobne). Viac sa mi páčila The Witch. A prvý horor, čo mi napadne, je THE SUBSTANCE.
19. Je niekto z miestnej scény (aktívny alebo neaktívny hudobník), s kým by ste si radi prečítali rozhovor na Jablká ďaleko od stromu?
Určite Nikola Babić – bubeník z kapely Chang FFos, ktorá už, žiaľ, nehrá.
