1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?
Hey whats up, my name is Rogier and i was the bassplayer in The Shining and i took care of bookings, a chunk of the songwriting and getting us out there. I’m a history teacher and my main interests these days are my kids and wife, my band Savage Beat and various other projects and my job which i like a lot.
2. What's the story of The Shining, the crossover band from Amsterdam?
Well we started about 25 years ago as a hardcore band and along the way we added a lot of crossover. From the first 7” on to the last lp you can see a nice progress into better played vision of misery and drunken debauchery :). The story is quite long. It actually will be told pretty complete in the second edition of the Crossover - The edge book by our mate Alexandros Anesiadis from Greece. Our line was pretty damn solid other than one change in our early years. Me, Mark on guitar, Nils on drums and Robert on vocals always were the band that got known a bit internationally.
Highlights would most definately be playing tours in japan, brasil and all over Europe. The play fast or dont fest in Czech sticks out as a particular great time as do many other. We managed to play with bands like The Accüsed, Wehrmacht, DRI, MDC, MOD, Agent Orange, Lahar, Municipal Waste, Life Sentence, Raw Power, Direct Control, Citizens Patrol, Scheisse Minnelli, Violator, Nuclear Devastation, Crippled Fox, Skulls and Flames, Waking the Dead and tons more. We made a lot of records including splits with our friends…so i guess we did what we wanted to.
3. Did you guys split because you felt burnt out from the underground scene, or are you still active in some way?
Nah I’m not burned out at all. At 43 i’m still playing, recording and releasing music and going to shows big and small. Some other members might have lost touch a little but i’m here for life baby!
The Shining ran its course and around 2015 we tried to change it into a new band. That kinda failed. In the end i started Savage Beat to channel my love for punk, oi and rnr. This band still goes strong. Nils and Mark went on as Crawling Blind which unfortunately kinda fizzled out. I initially played with them as well but coulant focus on two bands at the same time. Our singer Robert went into the world of weed. Kinda lost touch with him unfortunately.
4. Can you describe the Dutch underground scene for our readers? In your opinion, what was the golden decade for underground music, and which genres were at their peak? What sets Amsterdam’s scene apart from other major Dutch cities?
Every decade has had its key movers and shakers and always there’s a few band that are the scene’s flagship. I like to think that Amsterdam is not much different in regard to the underground. Just part of it.
In the eighties there was BGK and a ton of great bands. Every 5 to 6 years the scene gets an impulse. Right now there are some great young bands like The Covids, No Brains, Angstmaler, Traumatizer and a lot more who tour their ass off.
For some reason i have never been very aware of a thriving metal scene in Amsterdam. Dont know why. As for famous bands…i guess BGK, Vitamin X, Gewapend Beton, Dödsrit and a whole bunch more are well known enough worldwide
5. Georgios from Dödsrit mentioned that you’ve got some stories from touring Slovakia. How did you end up here, and what are some highlights?
We heard stories of a great scene and went out there to check it out. Our friend Mike D of Skulls And Flames/Waking the Dead helped us out as wel as the guys in Vitamin X and some other people. We played around 10 shows in Slovakia over the years. Fudd fest, the infamous Garagebox in Bratislava, Banska Bystrica and a bunch more. Good times.
Highlights would be fudd fest playing on a minigolf course and have a lot of fun with all the people. Playing and hanging out with boiling point. Banska Bystrica and the irish bar there. The fact a bear walked on the main square haha so much fun! Lighting fireworks of a garagebox during our set with a moshpit on the street…good times
6. What lessons did you learn from your Slovak tour, and what advice would you give others?
Read the l lyrics to our song Slowakian Meth and decide if you think if its good or bad and go for it ;)
But in all seriousness. Go out there meet the lovely people, have fun and get hammered.
7. If you could be born in the past, which era would you choose and as whom?
I’d check out either ancient Rome as an emperor during the Pax Romana. Or just be the Greek historian Herod and travel the ancient world or go to a BGK show here in Amsterdam in 1983 and try not to run in to my parents and baby me.
8. What’s pissed you off the most recently?
What hasn’t? Goddamn.
9. The last music video that caught your attention and the last album you had on repeat?
That video by Neon Christ in support of their discography where the have their teenage kids play their instruments is funny as shit.
As for albums: Lost Legion’s LP on Mendeku Diskak is fantastic. Also been spinning Tampere SS EPs, lots of old USHC, Camera Silens, Foreseen, Kohti Tuhoa, Yliset Yvet, Bastard’s Wind of Pain, the latest Long Knife LP, Pressure Pact, Dödsrit, Ultra Razzia, and Alvilda from Paris. Shit there's so much good music.
10. Film — your favorite horror, comedy, and something that’ll make me cry?
Uhm evil dead, the office and any cheap emotianal flick. Sleep deprivation makes me cry a lot anyway. Thats the punishment for a second kid haha

Nah, they can just jump of a cliff…
15. Liam or Noel Gallagher — who would you rather spend two weeks with on a desert island?
None, or maybe Noel…not to much of an Oasis fan. I’ll choose my old The Jam lps and drink cider with Paul Weller.
16. One last piece of advice for our readers?
Start a band, have fun, keep this shit alive. It gave me friends worldwide, my wife and job. Lets see what you get! Go to shows, support, buy merch, dont walk out on the band you dont know. Offer a place to crash, but that broke musician a beer, shit, do you part if you care about an underground scene.

1. Kto si, čo robíš a čo ťa momentálne najviac zaujíma?
Čauko, volám sa Rogier, hrával som na basgitare v The Shining a mal som na starosti bookingy, časť skladania a staral som sa o to, aby sme boli vidieť. Som učiteľ dejepisu a v súčasnosti ma najviac zaujíma moja rodina – deti, manželka, moja kapela Savage Beat a rôzne ďalšie projekty, plus moja práca, ktorú fakt mám rád.
2. Aký je príbeh kapely The Shining – crossover bandy z Amsterdamu?
Začali sme pred asi 25 rokmi ako hardcore kapela a postupne sme k tomu pridali veľa crossover prvkov. Od prvého sedempalca po posledné LP je vidieť pekný vývoj do lepšie zvládnutej vízie mizérie a opileckého výtržníctva :). Príbeh je dosť dlhý – bude dosť podrobne rozpísaný v druhom vydaní knihy Crossover – The Edge od nášho kamaráta Alexandrosa Anesiadisa z Grécka. Zostava bola celkom stabilná, okrem jednej výmeny v začiatkoch. Ja, Mark (gitara), Nils (bicie) a Robert (spev) sme boli tá zostava, čo sa dostala trochu do povedomia aj mimo Holandska.
Highlighty? Rozhodne turné v Japonsku, Brazílii a po celej Európe. Festival Play Fast or Don’t v Česku bol super, ako aj mnoho ďalších. Hrali sme s kapelami ako The Accused, Wehrmacht, DRI, MDC, MOD, Agent Orange, Lahar, Municipal Waste, Life Sentence, Raw Power, Direct Control, Citizens Patrol, Scheisse Minnelli, Violator, Nuclear Devastation, Crippled Fox, Skulls and Flames, Waking the Dead a s kopou ďalších. Nahrali sme veľa platní vrátane splitov s kamarátmi… myslím, že sme si splnili, čo sme chceli.
3. Rozišli ste sa, lebo ste sa cítili vyhorení z UG scény, alebo ste stále aktívni?
Nie, vôbec nie som vyhorený. Mám 43 a stále hrám, nahrávam, vydávam hudbu a chodím na koncerty – veľké aj malé. Niektorí iní členovia možno stratili kontakt, ale ja som tu do smrti, haha!
The Shining to dotiahli do konca a okolo 2015 sme to skúšali pretvoriť na novú kapelu – to veľmi nevyšlo. Nakoniec som založil Savage Beat, aby som ventiloval moju lásku k punku, oi a rock’n’rollu. Táto kapela stále funguje. Nils a Mark pokračovali ako Crawling Blind, čo sa žiaľ rozpadlo. Najprv som s nimi hral aj ja, ale nezvládal som dve kapely naraz. Spevák Robert prešiel do sveta marihuany, trochu sme stratili kontakt.
4. Ako by si popísal holandskú UG scénu? Ktoré dekády boli podľa teba zlaté a ktoré žánre vtedy dominovali? Čím sa amsterdamská scéna líši od iných miest v Holandsku?
Každá dekáda mala svojich hlavných ťahúňov. Amsterdam nie je iný ako ostatné mestá – je jednoducho súčasť scény.
V 80s tu bola napr. kapela BGK a kopec ďalších výborných band. Každých 5–6 rokov dostane scéna nový impulz. Dnes tu máme skvelé mladé kapely ako The Covids, No Brains, Angstmaler, Traumatizer a ďalšie, ktoré si to poctivo odjazdia.
Z nejakého dôvodu som nikdy veľmi nevnímal, že by v Amsterdame žila metalová scéna – neviem prečo.
Čo sa týka známych kapiel – povedzme BGK, Vitamin X, Gewapend Beton, Dödsrit – sú známe aj vo svete.
5. Georgios z Dödsrit spomenul, že máš zaujímavé spomienky na turné po Slovensku. Ako ste sa sem dostali a čo si pamätáš najviac?
Počuli sme o super scéne, tak sme sa tam vybrali. Pomohol nám Mike D zo Skulls And Flames/Waking the Dead, tiež ľudia z Vitamin X a ďalší. Za tie roky sme odohrali asi 10 koncertov po Slovensku – Fudd Fest, ten legendárne garáže v Bratislave, Banská Bystrica a ďalšie.
Boli to dobré časy.
Highlighty? Fudd Fest na minigolfovom ihrisku a hromada zábavy. Koncert a popíjanie s Boiling Point. Irish pub v Bystrici. Medveď na námestí, haha! Ohňostroj počas setu v garáži s moshpitom na ulici – proste pecka.
6. Aké ponaučenie si si zobral zo slovenského turné a čo by si poradil ostatným?
Prečítajte si text našej skladby Slowakian Meth a rozhodnite sa, či to je dobré alebo zlé… a choďte do toho ;) Ale vážne – choďte tam, spoznajte tých skvelých ľudí, zabavte sa a opite sa.
7. Keby si sa mohol narodiť v minulosti, v ktorom období a ako kto by si sa chcel narodiť?
Buď v starovekom Ríme ako cisár počas Pax Romana. Alebo ako grécky historik Herodotos a precestovať vtedajší svet. Alebo by som sa teleportoval do roku 1983 na koncert BGK v Amsterdame a snažil sa nečeliť mojim rodičom s malým mnou v kočíku.
8. Čo ťa naposledy najviac naštvalo?
Čo ma nenaštvalo? Do riti...
9. Posledný videoklip, čo ťa zaujal, a posledný album, čo si mal na repeate?
Videoklip od Neon Christ, kde za nich hrajú ich deti – fakt vtipné.
Čo sa týka hudby, LP od Lost Legion (Mendeku Diskak) je fantastické. Taktiež EP-čka Tampere SS, veľa starého USHC, Camera Silens, starý aj nový punk a oi, Foreseen, Kohti Tuhoa a Yliset Yvet (Fínsko), Bastard – Wind of Pain, posledné LP od Long Knife, Pressure Pact, Dodsrit, Ultra Razzia z Kanady, Alvilda z Paríža... toľko dobrej hudby!
10. Tvoj obľúbený horor, komédia a niečo, pri čom si naposledy plakal?
Horor: Evil Dead
Komédia: The Office
Plakanie: Čokoľvek emotívne a lacné – a spánková deprivácia robí svoje. To je trest za druhé dieťa, haha.

Comes Crisis, Comes Death alebo Oblivion z nášho posledného LP. Apokalypsa sa blíži, mwoehahaha!Myslím, že to LP je náš najsilnejší materiál – dúfam, že by sa niekomu mohlo páčiť.
13. Kto zo scény (aktívny alebo neaktívny hudobník) by si zaslúžil rozhovor na Jablká ďaleko od stromu?
Chcem update od mojich českých hrdinov – LAHAR!
14. Vieš o nejakom doomsday kulte, ktorý by si odporučil našim čitateľom?
Nie... nech radšej skočia z útesu, haha.
15. Liam alebo Noel Gallagher – ktorého by si si vybral na dvojtýždňovú dovolenku na opustenom ostrove?
Asi Noela… nie som veľký fanúšik Oasis. Radšej si zoberiem staré LP od The Jam a popíjam cider s Paulom Wellerom.
16. Aký posledný odkaz by si nechal našim čitateľom?
Založ kapelu, bav sa, drž túto scénu pri živote. Mne to dalo kamarátov po celom svete, manželku aj prácu. Poďme zistiť, čo to dá tebe. Chodievaj na koncerty, podporuj, kupuj merch, neodchádzaj z koncertu, keď hrá kapela, ktorú nepoznáš. Ponúkni prespať, kúp tomu chudobnému muzikantovi pivo – proste urob, čo môžeš, ak ti na scéne záleží.
