1. Who are you, what do you do, and what has been capturing your interest the most these days?
We are Doomnezeu, we spread peace and faith trough music, and to paraphrase Machiavelli: 'A prince should therefore have no other aim or thought but heavy metal and its organisation and discipline.'
2. I first discovered Doomnezeu through a friend's recommendation during one of the early COVID lockdowns, when you had the single "Pe Tine Te Fericim" out on Bandcamp. Since then, the band has continued releasing new music and playing live shows. Some sources still describe Doomnezeu as a project—would you say it's now a full-fledged band, or does it still function as a project?
Although initially a studio project Doomnezeu has now grown into a full-fledged band, due in no small part to the fervent support of our fans, both Christian and otherwise. However, this too is not the terminus; There is still room for more growth – ideally, we would like to add a full choir to our live shows as well as some extra instruments.
3. What’s the story and concept behind Doomnezeu? Did you all have a specific vision or concept in mind before you started writing music and lyrics?
We were struck by how heavy church music sounded, and we tried to translate that feeling into metal. After releasing our first song, a rework of the Romanian Christmas carol 'La Viflaim Colo-n Jos', we tried to do the opposite; to write heavy metal music in an Orthodox-Byzantine style, and found a deep well of inspiration that, to this day, we are gratefully drinking from.
4. As a hardcore fan of Type O Negative, what struck me when I heard the early singles by Doomnezeu was the mystical atmosphere reminiscent of 'Christian Woman'. Am I completely off with this reference, or did that influence play a role? What are your main musical inspirations?
You are spot on with this remark. We weren't listeners of Type 0 Negative, but due to constant comparisons to them we decided to give them a listen. It is impossible to describe the joy and awe we felt upon listening to 'October Rust' for the first time. Ever since the song 'Lazăr' (which came about while trying to figure out a fingerstyle rendition of the song 'Love you to death'), at least one of the members of Doomnezeu has become a diehard Type 0 Negative fan. He still listens to their music religiously to this day and worships the legacy of St. Peter Steele.
Another huge influence is Dio, the man and the band. Their music is both infinitely positive, fun, as well as dark and brave. We have to mention Electric Wizard for their devilishly seductive sound and also give tribute to our Romanian heroes Sentem and Fulmineos. To top it off, Mastodon, Kyuss, Metallica, Yes, Tool, Boris and many others also blew, and continue to blow our minds to this day.
5. Doomnezeu's songwriting is highly crafted and well-composed, which suggests the band is made up of skilled musicians. Do the band members have a history of playing in other bands? If it's not a secret, could you share which other bands or projects helped you develop your skills?
First of all, thank you for your kind words, and second, yes, our members have spent many years playing music and playing WITH music, learning what it means to write a good song and how to be honest with yourself in the music you make. We sang in church choirs, founded rock, metal and punk bands, played weddings and jammed with DJs. Although this helped hone our skills, our writing comes from a place of serving an idea rather than exercising an ability, which is something that can be done at any skill level.
Unfortunately, we will not disclose our previous bands – we enjoy the anonymity and the peace that it brings.
6. When looking deeper into Doomnezeu's lyrical themes, including the name of the band, they seem to carry a deeply religious message, which is quite unique in a genre typically associated with the opposite side. Is this rebellion genuine, or is there an element of sarcasm or irony in your approach?
It is both. We strongly believe that Christianity can offer guidance to those who want to take control of their lives and be a source of joy for themselves and the people they love. However, we feel that the church does not speak to people in a way that they can understand. A conversation between two people at the same table is much more powerful that preaching from a pulpit. This “speaking down to people” we feel is a grave mistake. So, we choose to have these conversations where they are needed most – in dungeons, rock clubs, concert halls and metal festivals. Those who listen to us just for the ironic aspect are welcome to enjoy our music further. We encourage people to only take what they need from Doomnezeu, no strings attached.
7. Your lyrics are sung in Romanian, which suggests they are intended more for the local audience. What kind of feedback has the band received from fans in Romania? Do you also get noticed by listeners outside of your country, and what have their reactions been? Do fans appreciate the unique direction of Doomnezeu?
Doomnezeu is a group deeply in love with language in general. Going back to your previous question about writing music, we try to serve and enrich our heritage. Throughout our songs you will hear Serbian, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Hungarian, for example, but we mostly write in Romanian because this is who we are, and we try to put aside thoughts about reaching a wider audience trough writing in English.
We feel the feedback has been perfect: people were willing and eager to explore, both in and outside of Romania. It reaffirms something that has been proven before – language isn’t an impenetrable barrier in music. Fans from abroad might not be able to understand everything we say but they can still feel our message, like we did with the band Boris, who sing in Japanese, or the Nigerian composer Fela Kuti.
We sometimes receive messages from people who put in a lot of time to write to us in the same form of archaic Romanian language that we often use. Fans clearly understand our direction and one of our beloved correspondents from the US has even started learning a bit of Romanian so that he could write to us in our own language. This to us is priceless! We love our fans.
8. The new album "Al Doilea Legământ" (The Second Covenant) is set for release in April. How long have you been working on the material, and where did you record it?
All songs were recorded at the same time, live in the studio, in July 2023. Some songs like 'Du-ne Adu-ne' and 'Al Doilea Legământ' had been written much longer before, while 'Stavriloborg' was written in the spring and 'Ține-i Blînzi' only a few weeks previously. After the instrumental tracks were finished, we took our time recording the vocals and overdubs and finishing the songs one at a time, until the EP was finished. Recording, mixing and mastering was all done by Neagoe. We also tried recording the songs 'Vezak Je Vezla', 'Îngerașul' and 'Tăriile Plevei', but we decided that these weren't yet ready and we hope to include them on our next album.
9. What is the concept behind the new album "Al Doilea Legământ", and how has the band evolved both lyrically and musically since the debut album?
Al Doilea Legământ is not a concept album, so there’s no overarching theme, but it does mark the first time we recorded as a band, so in a way it is a second beginning for us, marking our transition from a studio project to a band.
10. What are your touring plans? Can we expect you to perform in Bratislava anytime soon?
We just finished a tour of Romania, promoting the album's release. We played 9 concerts in 9 cities across Romania: Cluj-Napoca, Târgu-Mureș, Sibiu, Buzău, Iași, Galați, București, Brașov and Timișoara, all in one go. Up next we're very excited to have been invited to play at Rockstadt Extreme Fest, in Râșnov, Romania, on the 1st of August. After that, we will hold back on live appearances until the end of the year in order to consolidate, record, and come back with more. We’d love to come play in Bratislava, and we vow to do so... hopefully next year.
11. What is the stoner doom scene like in Romania? Are you part of it, and are there any other interesting bands besides Doomnezeu and Church of Cthulhu?
The stoner doom scene is Romania is mostly bi-polar, split between Timișoara and Bucharest, where it is very active both in discography and concerts. However, apart from a few exceptions like Oradea, we could say that it is almost completely absent in the rest of the country.
Besides Church of Cthulhu, we warmly recommend that you listen to established bands such as The Egocentrics, Roadkillsoda, Nomega and Methadone Skies, and also keep an eye out for newcomers Zen Motherfucker and Annapurna. We recently discovered the band Jahmolxes which are incredibly talented. Last but not least, one of the greatest hidden gems in all of Romanian music is the band Ixmucane. God bless them all!
12. Which bands do you enjoy sharing the stage with - in the past and in the present, and what are your favourite venues to play at?
We've done a tour and album with Church of Cthulhu, several concerts with Zen Motherfucker, as well as a cathartic one-off show with the greats, Ordinul Negru. These would be our favourite collabs so far as these bands have blended seamlessly with our image and style. We will definitely also be playing again with our noisy brother Dronisie Răsăriteanul.
As for venues, touring for us has always been pleasurable and easy. It may be surprising, but there are a lot of professional venues in Romania, so it is hard to pick. Expirat (Bucharest) were the first ones to invite us to play, Flying Circus (Cluj) and Underground Pub (Iași) have wild audiences, Club Quantic (Bucharest) feels more like a festival stage than a club, Casa Tineretului (Timișoara) have the most awesome lights and stage production, the sound in Rockstadt (Brașov) is massive, we saw crowd surfing in Lokal (Oradea), Republic Hub (Târgu Mureș) are so easy to work with, we've always played our best shows in La Felinare (Buzău) for a handful of people, Versus Pub (Galați) have the best hospitality, M2 (Timișoara) had a special grassroots charm and the people from Metal Bunker (Craiova) are the so fun to be around.
There are others we haven't mentioned due to brevity, some that we hope to reach soon and many abroad that we wish to add to this list.
13. Which sound (studio, album/band), artwork (album cover), and music video have impressed you the most recently?
With the risk of coming of as a poser, I (Manole) will answer this question truthfully: Currently in love with RATT's 1984 debut album 'Out of the cellar', which has lots of swagger, pop appeal as well as being suprisingly heavy for the time. I can't help but recommend Balu Brigada's single 'So Cold'. This song makes me feel like I am 1000 years young again. Check out 'Lavender' by Druidess, a sound incorporating vaporwave and shoegaze which I love. Last but not least 'October swimmer' by JJ72 is so touching and 'Ain't that a shame' by Cheap Trick has the most inspiring drum beat I've heard in a while.
As far as artworks are concerned, look up Dronisie Răsăriteanu's EPs on Bandcamp. The artworks are very charming and they are an excelent representation of his weird 'music'.
Music videos aren't an artform I usually consume, but after a bit of brain-scratching I can confidently recommend 'Ender' by Dead Register. This might also earn us back a few trv kvlt points that we lost in the previous first paragraph.
14. Did you see Eggers' Nosferatu? If so, what did you think of it?
Yes, we did! One of our members saw it in Austria, and said you could immediately tell how many Romanians were in the theatre, because they all started laughing when the old gypsy started swearing. The atmosphere and cinematography were an absolute delight! If we ever manage to bargain with Satan for his soul, we will make Robert Eggers film a music video for us. But for now, we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!
15. Do you think Pharaoh Akhenaton might have given some inspiration to the Jewish tribes in writing the Old Testament?
In music and in religion, it’s all about your influences! And Akhenaton is to Christianity kind of like what Dick Dale was to black metal, if you think about it. There’s definitely something there!
16. Any last words?
May the Lord forgive our tritones and bless your hearts with heavy metal.

Doomnezeu @ JBLK:
Review of Doomnezeu - Doomnezeu (2023) by Flork:
https://jablkadaleko.blogspot.com/2025/03/147-doomnezeu-doomnezeu-2023.html
========================================================================
1. Kto ste, čo robíte a čo vás v poslednej dobe najviac zaujíma?
Sme Doomnezeu, šírime mier a vieru cez hudbu a aby sme parafrázovali Machiavelliho: „Knieža by nemalo mať iný cieľ či záujem než heavy metal a jeho organizáciu a disciplínu.“
2. Na Doomnezeu som narazil počas jedného z prvých lockdownov počas covidu na odporúčanie kamaráta, keď ste mali na Bandcampe vonku singel „Pe Tine Te Fericim“. Odvtedy kapela pokračuje vo vydávaní noviniek a hrá koncerty.
3. Aký je príbeh a koncept Doomnezeu? Mali ste už pred začiatkom písania hudby a textov nejakú konkrétnu víziu alebo ideu?
Zasiahlo nás, aká ťažká a silná dokáže byť cirkevná hudba, a pokúsili sme sa tento pocit preniesť do metalu. Po vydaní našej prvej piesne, prerábky rumunskej vianočnej koledy „La Viflaim Colo-n Jos“, sme sa pokúsili ísť opačnou cestou: písať heavy metalovú hudbu v ortodoxno-byzantskom štýle – a objavili sme hlboký prameň inšpirácie, z ktorého dodnes vďačne čerpáme.
Ich hudba je nekonečne pozitívna, zábavná, no zároveň temná a odvážna. Musíme spomenúť aj Electric Wizard pre ich diabolsky zvodný zvuk a vzdať hold našim rumunským hrdinom Sentem a Fulmineos. A k tomu nás dodnes fascinujú aj Mastodon, Kyuss, Metallica, Yes, Tool, Boris a mnohí ďalší.
11. Aká je stoner doom scéna v Rumunsku? Ste jej súčasťou? Existujú aj iné zaujímavé kapely okrem Doomnezeu a Church of Cthulhu?
Okrem Church of Cthulhu vám srdečne odporúčame vypočuť si etablované kapely ako The Egocentrics, Roadkillsoda, Nomega a Methadone Skies.
Odohrali sme turné a album s Church of Cthulhu, niekoľko koncertov so Zen Motherfucker, ako aj katarzný jednorazový koncert s legendami Ordinul Negru.
13. Ktorý zvuk (štúdio, album/kapela), obal (albumový artwork) a videoklip vás v poslednom čase najviac zaujali?
Aj s rizikom, že budem pôsobiť ako pózer, odpoviem úprimne – momentálne som (Manole) zamilovaný do debutového albumu RATT – Out of the Cellar (1984). Má štýl, popový ťah, a pritom je prekvapivo tvrdý na tú dobu. Nemôžem nespomenúť singel Balu Brigada – So Cold – tá skladba mi dáva pocit, že som znova tisíc rokov mladý. Určite si vypočujte Druidess – Lavender – ich zvuk spája vaporwave a shoegaze, čo milujem.
Atmosféra a kamera boli čistá rozkoš!
16. Posledné slová?
Nech nám Pán odpustí tritóny a požehná vaše srdcia heavy metalom.
