1. Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?
I'm Paul. I play drums in a band called Nekrodeus among others and that is definitely the thing that interests me the most.
2. Which bands have you been a part of before forming Nekrodeus?
The Band was formed by members of a band called Blasphemist/Zodiac in 2013. I joined them in 2016. Back then i was doing vocals in a band called Norikum who split up in 2020 and played drums in Ellende which i'm still doing to this day.
3. Nekrodeus started as a death metal band but has gradually incorporated more blackened/crust influences—at least, that was my impression after seeing you live twice in 2024. Would you agree with that assessment, and how would you describe your musical evolution from inception to today?
That sums it up pretty good! When i joined in 2016 it was straight up Death Metal. Back than i was heavily into Converge and i wanted to do something with a similar vibe. So when we started writing songs together the material became somewhat punk-ier and we as a band became more open to other influences as well. Over time we threw more and more Black Metal in the Mix and here we are today!
4. Tell me something about the new album you're about to introduce these days/weeks — what was the creation process like and what were the key moments during the composition and recording?
This time it was a very focused process. We decided to do a new album and Basti already had a ton of riffs prepared. It was mostly him and me working on the stuff in my rehearsal space. Afterwards we have sent Stefan rough recordings of what we've been working on and he gave his feedback. Sometimes we were all three in the same room together. Over the course of a few months we got the songs worked out and Stefan wrote lyrics and did the vocal arrangements. After that we did a preproduction and it was time for the studio.
We tightend our sound from our first album "Moloch" to "Asbest" and the same thing happend with "Ruaß". I think it turned out as the natural successor to "Asbest". We trimmed the fat, making songstructures more fast paced while trying to not get too ADHD with it and maintaining the typical Nekrodeus sound.
5. Your previous two albums, Moloch (2018) and Asbest (2022), had distinct lyrical themes. How would you describe their message, and what can we expect from the third album? Does it follow the continuity of the first two, or does it take a completely new direction?
Overall i'd say our lyrics are pretty much dealing with the same stuff allover: the human/societal condition and personal struggles with probably some exceptions. Moloch might have been more introspective in general, but there is no "concept" or "greater theme" running behind our lyrics, they are what was (or might still be) important to us at the time we wrote the songs.
In terms of a message i'd say we'd like people to associate their own feelings, or get their own "message" within what i would describe as "the greater mood" that is (hopefully) conveyed by the songs, some might be more clear in terms of interpretation, especially on the new record, while others want you to think about them a little bit more.
6. Which song and lyrics from your band would you highlight?
We try to write songs that are different from each other but at the same time have a sound and vibe that identifies them as Nekrodeus songs. So you can get a different experience from different songs. I guess from the "Asbest" album "Lied Aus Blei" seems to be a good gateway song. I'm very happy with our new album "RUAß" so basically i can highlight the whole record!
7. What is the moment that separates "technical skill" from art?
Art imo is created when you put multiple technical skills together and make something unique with it. Music eg is created from a variety of technical building blocks. Each of them separat doesn't mean very much in terms of art. It is how you combine those elements into something personal and meaningful that make it count.
8. Should art have boundaries, or are there topics that art shouldn’t touch?
I think art should not have boundaries in terms of which topics it is allowed to touch and which not. Art is meant to trigger reactions. Sometimes these reactions are not pleasant based on personal experiences or traumas. But also in this areas it resonates the most, i think. Art is meaningful when it touches on personal experiences of individuals. However it should not be misused to support forms of intolerance. It is a place to reflect and take a different view on things rather than live out your phobias and preconceptions.
9. Share an interesting story or stories from the life of your band. How far have you climbed on the ladder of decadence?
That one time we got payed hotelrooms with beds and actual mattress' in it... we felt like kings!!
10. Do you think that videoclips are important or overrated?
Musicvideos can be cool and beneficial for a band but you can do well as a band without having any of them. Before putting out a cringe video maybe consider not to do so. A bad video does more harm then good. But i guess taste is a personal thing and i might cringe on stuff the ordinary Sabaton listener loves.
11. How is the UG blackened crust scene in Graz and Austria in general? Do you see yourselves as part of the local scene, or do you feel more connected to an international community? Which countries' scenes and bands do you collaborate with most closely?
When we talk about the UG blackend crust scene in Graz i guess we talk about 15-20 people. haha
But for real i think we have an awesome development in our local scene in Graz. A lot of new bands form and they play interesting music. So i think its worth to do a bit of digging in that scene. I feel connected to our local scene as much as i feel connected to a international community. We have friends in most of our neighboring countries, that is awesome and something we appreciate very much!
12. How do you think the local scene has evolved in the last decade, where do you see it going next?
A decade ago it was pretty much dead and like i said before at the moment i think its thriving again!! No idea where the scene is heading. I hope people keep forming/playing in bands and also attending shows!
13. What are you favorite venues in Austria and neighboring countries and some memorable gigs that you played last year?
Kapu in Linz, Arena and Venster in Vienna, Rockhouse in Salzburg, Zuckerfabrik in Enns, Musichouse, Sub, Wakuum and Explosiv in Graz are my favorites i can think of right now. Pink Whale is a nice one too!
Last year our most memorable show was playing Sauzipf Festival for sure. Bucketlist show for two of us, since it was the first festival we ever attended as visitors and just the biggest show the band played so far. They booked us right after sundown and people were going apeshit after almost a full day of stoner music! Will never forget that! But we played a lot of very nice smaller shows as well. As long as we have the feeling that people give a shit at the places we play we are happy!!
14. During the pandemic, we experienced a slowdown and isolation, during which we attended illegal concerts and appreciated everything being created. Now we’re back in a world oversaturated with concerts and new music—how did you perceive that period of slowing down, and do you miss it, even a little?
Looking back on those times i loved it. The slowing down of basically everything was very soothing for me. Even though back then i perceived it as quite scary as well. A good moment to take an honest look at what we are doing and if we want to keep doing that. I was hoping that the positive effects on society in terms of awareness to health and so on were lasting a bit longer but that is apparently not the case.
15. Which sound (studio, album/band), artwork (album cover), and music video from the scene have impressed you the most recently?
Well there is a lot actually, stuff that is recorded at Doom Studios (one of the reasons we went with Markus) is always coming out great, thinking of the latest releases by our friends in Caloris Impact and The Snub, also Tonstudio Grelle Musik has done amazing records with some of our local favorites in Tired, Thosar and Harrowist.
For artworks some locals that stuck to me lately are from records by Cryptal Echoes, Holy Whores, Opium Masala and The Goatjuring.
Some "kind of recent" music videos that are great are "Funny Games" by Lilac Vegetal, "Plaguebearer" by Pryne (taken from an amazing record btw), "Samotan" by Left To Starve and also Ultima Radio are consistently putting out some great videos!
16. A music album, book, film, series, video game, tattoo studio that you recommend.
Album: Human Clay - Creed. Dadrock!
Book: Say Nothing - Patrick Radden Keefe. A book about the conflicts in northern ireland. Shocking and fascinating!!
Film: Oldboy - Park Chang-wook. My all time favorite movie.
Series: currently watching Better Call Saul. Brilliant!!

I can relate to both. In this very moment the Sex Pistols quote sounds more appealing to me and I'm happy that it is like that!

1. Kto si, čo robíš a čo ťa v súčasnosti najviac zaujíma?
Som Paul. Hrám na bicie v kapele Nekrodeus, okrem iných projektov, a to je rozhodne to, čo ma momentálne najviac zaujíma.
2. V ktorých kapelách si pôsobil pred založením Nekrodeus?
Kapelu založili v roku 2013 členovia skupiny Blasphemist/Zodiac. Ja som sa k nim pridal v roku 2016. V tom čase som spieval v kapele Norikum, ktorá sa rozpadla v roku 2020, a hral som na bicie v kapele Ellende, kde pôsobím dodnes.
3. Nekrodeus začínal ako death metalová kapela, ale postupne do svojej hudby začlenil viac blackened/crust prvkov – aspoň taký som mal dojem po tom, čo som vás v roku 2024 videl dvakrát naživo. Súhlasíš s týmto hodnotením a ako by si opísal váš hudobný vývoj od začiatku až po súčasnosť?
To to celkom dobre vystihuje! Keď som sa v roku 2016 pridal, bol to čistý death metal. Vtedy som bol veľmi ovplyvnený Converge a chcel som robiť niečo s podobnou energiou. Keď sme teda začali spolu skladať skladby, materiál začal byť trochu viac punkový a ako kapela sme sa otvorili aj iným vplyvom. Postupom času sme do našej hudby pridávali čoraz viac black metalu – a tak sme sa dostali tam, kde sme dnes!
4. Povedz mi niečo o novom albume, ktorý práve predstavujete – aký bol proces jeho tvorby a aké boli kľúčové momenty pri skladaní a nahrávaní?
Tentoraz to bol veľmi sústredený proces. Rozhodli sme sa spraviť nový album a Basti už mal pripravenú kopu riffov. Väčšinou sme na materiáli pracovali spolu v mojej skúšobni. Potom sme posielali Stefanovi hrubé nahrávky toho, na čom sme robili, a on nám dal spätnú väzbu. Občas sme boli všetci traja v jednej miestnosti. Počas niekoľkých mesiacov sme dotiahli skladby, Stefan napísal texty a urobil vokálne aranžmány. Potom sme spravili predprodukciu a bol čas ísť do štúdia.
Naša hudba sa od debutového albumu Moloch k Asbest viac vyprofilovala – a to isté sa stalo s Ruaß. Myslím si, že je to prirodzený nástupca Asbestu. Osekali sme zbytočnosti, zrýchlili sme štruktúry skladieb, ale zároveň sme nechceli byť príliš chaotickí. Snažili sme sa zachovať typický Nekrodeus zvuk.
5. Vaše predchádzajúce dva albumy, Moloch (2018) a Asbest (2022), mali výrazné textové témy. Ako by si opísal ich posolstvo a čo môžeme očakávať od tretieho albumu? Nadväzuje na kontinuitu prvých dvoch, alebo sa vydáva úplne novým smerom?
Celkovo by som povedal, že naše texty sa stále točia okolo podobných tém – ľudskej spoločnosti, jej stavu a osobných zápasov, samozrejme s pár výnimkami. Moloch bol možno introspektívnejší, ale v zásade nemáme žiadny „koncept“ alebo „hlavnú myšlienku“, ktorá by sa tiahla všetkými textami. Sú jednoducho odrazom toho, čo bolo (alebo stále je) pre nás dôležité v čase, keď sme skladby písali.
Čo sa týka posolstva, skôr než aby sme ľuďom diktovali významy, chceme, aby si v našej hudbe našli vlastné pocity a interpretácie. Hlavná atmosféra skladieb – ten celkový pocit, ktorý (dúfame) dokážeme sprostredkovať – je to, čo by si mali poslucháči spojiť so svojimi vlastnými emóciami. Niektoré skladby sú v tomto smere priamejšie, najmä na novom albume, iné si vyžadujú, aby sa nad nimi človek trochu viac zamyslel.
6. Ktorú skladbu a texty z vašej tvorby by si vyzdvihol?
Snažíme sa písať skladby, ktoré sú navzájom odlišné, ale zároveň majú zvuk a atmosféru, ktorá ich jasne identifikuje ako Nekrodeus. Každá skladba tak ponúka trochu iný zážitok. Myslím si, že na albume Asbest je dobrým vstupným bodom skladba Lied Aus Blei. S naším novým albumom Ruaß som veľmi spokojný, takže by som v podstate mohol vyzdvihnúť celý album!
7. Kedy sa technická zručnosť mení na umenie?
Podľa mňa vzniká umenie vtedy, keď spojíš viacero technických zručností a vytvoríš z nich niečo jedinečné. Hudba napríklad pozostáva z rôznych technických stavebných prvkov. Každý z nich sám osebe nemá veľký umelecký význam. To, ako ich skombinuješ do niečoho osobného a zmysluplného, je to, čo robí rozdiel.
8. Malo by mať umenie hranice, alebo sú témy, ktorých by sa nemalo dotýkať?
Myslím si, že umenie by nemalo mať hranice v tom zmysle, že by malo byť obmedzené v témach, ktorým sa môže venovať. Umenie má vyvolávať reakcie. Niekedy môžu byť tieto reakcie nepríjemné, najmä ak sa dotýkajú osobných skúseností alebo tráum. Práve v týchto oblastiach však umenie môže najviac rezonovať. Umenie je zmysluplné, keď oslovuje osobné skúsenosti jednotlivcov. Nemalo by sa však zneužívať na podporu netolerancie. Malo by slúžiť na reflexiu a nové pohľady na veci, nie na ventilovanie fóbií a predsudkov.
9. Podeľ sa o nejakú zaujímavú historku zo života kapely. Ako ďaleko ste sa dostali na rebríčku dekadencie?
Raz nám zaplatili hotelové izby s posteľami a skutočnými matracmi… cítili sme sa ako králi!
10. Myslíš si, že videoklipy sú dôležité, alebo sú skôr preceňované?
Videoklipy môžu byť pre kapelu fajn a užitočné, ale dá sa celkom dobre fungovať aj bez nich. Ak máš vydať trápne video, možno je lepšie ho radšej vôbec nerobiť. Zlé video urobí viac škody ako úžitku. Ale vkus je, samozrejme, subjektívna záležitosť – to, čo mne príde cringy, môže bežnému poslucháčovi Sabatonu pripadať úplne skvelé.
11. Ako vyzerá UG blackened crust scéna v Grazi a Rakúsku všeobecne? Považujete sa za súčasť lokálnej scény, alebo sa cítite viac prepojení s medzinárodnou komunitou? S kapelami z ktorých krajín najčastejšie spolupracujete?
Keď sa bavíme o UG blackened crust scéne v Grazi, hovoríme asi o 15-20 ľuďoch. Haha.
Ale vážne – myslím si, že naša lokálna scéna v Grazi sa v posledných rokoch výborne rozvíja. Vzniká veľa nových kapiel, ktoré hrajú zaujímavú hudbu, takže sa určite oplatí trochu sa v tejto scéne pohrabať. Cítim sa byť prepojený s miestnou scénou rovnako ako s medzinárodnou komunitou. Máme priateľov v mnohých susedných krajinách, čo je skvelé a veľmi si to vážime!
12. Ako sa podľa teba lokálna scéna vyvinula za poslednú dekádu a kam smeruje ďalej?
Pred desiatimi rokmi bola v podstate mŕtva, ale ako som už spomenul, momentálne opäť prekvitá! Kde bude o pár rokov, to netuším. Dúfam, že ľudia budú aj naďalej zakladať kapely, hrať v nich a hlavne chodiť na koncerty!
13. Aké sú tvoje obľúbené koncertné miesta v Rakúsku a susedných krajinách? A ktoré koncerty, ktoré ste odohrali minulý rok, boli pre teba najpamätnejšie?
Kapu v Linzi, Arena a Venster vo Viedni, Rockhouse v Salzburgu, Zuckerfabrik v Ennse, Musichouse, Sub, Wakuum a Explosiv v Grazi sú moje obľúbené miesta, ktoré mi teraz napadajú. Pink Whale je tiež skvelý!
Najpamätnejší koncert minulého roka bol určite na Sauzipf Festivale. Pre dvoch z nás to bol splnený sen, pretože to bol prvý festival, ktorý sme kedysi navštívili ako diváci, a zároveň to bol zatiaľ náš najväčší koncert. Hrali sme hneď po západe slnka, a keďže pred nami hrali celý deň prevažne stoner kapely, ľudia sa doslova zbláznili! Nikdy na to nezabudneme! Ale odohrali sme aj veľa skvelých menších koncertov – pokiaľ cítime, že ľuďom na mieste, kde hráme, na našej hudbe záleží, sme spokojní!
14. Počas pandémie sme zažili spomalenie a izoláciu, chodili sme na ilegálne koncerty a vážili si všetko, čo sa tvorilo. Teraz sme späť vo svete presýtenom koncertmi a novou hudbou – ako si vnímal to obdobie spomalenia a chýba ti aspoň trochu?
Keď sa na to obdobie spätne pozerám, musím povedať, že som si ho v istom zmysle užíval. Celkové spomalenie života bolo pre mňa veľmi upokojujúce, aj keď v tej dobe som to vnímal aj ako dosť desivé. Bol to dobrý moment na to, aby sme sa úprimne pozreli na to, čo robíme, a či v tom chceme pokračovať. Dúfal som, že pozitívne efekty pandémie – napríklad zvýšené povedomie o zdraví – vydržia dlhšie, ale očividne to tak nie je.
15. Ktorý zvuk (štúdio, album/kapela), obal albumu a hudobné video zo scény ťa v poslednom čase najviac zaujali?
Je toho dosť! Nahrávky zo Doom Studios (čo je jeden z dôvodov, prečo sme sa rozhodli pre Markusa) vždy znejú skvele – spomenul by som najnovšie albumy našich kamarátov Caloris Impact a The Snub. Tonstudio Grelle Musik tiež odviedlo skvelú prácu na nahrávkach našich miestnych obľúbencov Tired, Thosar a Harrowist.
Čo sa týka obalov albumov, v poslednej dobe ma zaujali nahrávky od Cryptal Echoes, Holy Whores, Opium Masala a The Goatjuring.
