There are many things I like about Ignore Yourself, the 2020 release
by the Slovak grunge pop/rock band The Chronic Sleepers. In addition to
the name of the album, I really love the name of the group too. It isn’t
any reflection of their music, since they are far from sounding
lethargic, but rather they know how to incorporate dreamy elements are
heard all throughout the album. And yet the album does have a raw edge
to it as it is full of energy and rocks at a milder tempo. Ignore
Yourself comprises elements of pop, grunge, rock, and heavy doses of raw
emotion, the perfect recipe for a top-notch album that evokes memories
of the 90s here in Slovakia, when grunge was heavily noticed by the
emerging alternative scene. The Flork-man himself remembers this sound
very well from venues like U-Club, which was an amazing hangout under
the castle for young people who liked beer and Doc Martens. These days
the club’s fate is unknown as controversial building project has closed
its doors indefinitely.
Anyways though, back to the band and their cool little album.
Frontman Roman Skupin's vocal delivery and lyrical prowess are amazing
and doubtlessly grunge, which also evoke comparisons to the iconic Kurt
Cobain of Nirvana. But Skupin's raw emotion and authenticity does shine
through in each track, reminiscent of Cobain's ability to connect with
listeners on a deep, emotional level. Don’t get me wrong, Skupin isn’t
trying to copy Cobain, but models his own original style after him as
many singers of grunge music often do (raspy vocals are signature to the
genre). Songs like Don't Look at Me and I Thought I Knew You deliver a
one-two punch of intense energy, with Skupin's impassioned vocals
drawing parallels to the performance and style of the grunge vocalists
who originally came out Seatle, like Chris Cornell, Eddy Vedder, and
Mark Lanagan from the Screaming trees.
What sets The Chronic Sleepers apart from other Slovak punk and
grunge bands is not just its emotional depth and musical diversity, but
the fact that the vocals are sung in English without accent. This is
particularly important for any group who wants to play at an
international level. And so, this seamless language delivery allows the
lyrics to resonate with a global audience, further highlighting the
band's dedication to their craft and their desire to connect with
listeners on a universal level.
But it's not just the vocals that captivate, the star of the show is
the songs themselves. Don't Look at Me kicks off the album with gritty
guitar riffs and an in-your-face attitude. I really like the acoustic
sounds athe beginning of this track. I Thought I Knew You builds up the
energy, channeling raw emotion and introspection. Both this track and
the former set the mood for even more fun ahead. And as I mentioned
early, there is a dreamy element incorporated in their sound that is
hardly nightmarish, but rather quite beautiful and inspiring. Anonymity
introduces atmospheric depth, while I Just Wanna Meet You maintains an
upbeat tempo with its catchy hooks. Oh man, does this track ever
resonate loudly with me as I remember all the loves I could have loved
in my life, secret crushes that always remained secret. I totally dig
the guitar solo here.
Tired of the Sleep keeps the energy alive, and Sonic Sleep takes a
dreamy turn with great riffs and an overall cool melody. Bump to the
Fool stands out as an infectious, high-energy track with a rock-solid
beat, and showcases Skupin's passionate vocals. The bass riff in
Nothing's Wrong, Nothing's Right offers a more introspective side, laden
with a certain vulnerability heard in the lyrics. Sung in Slovak, Sám
si stratil, sám si hľadaj adds a unique cultural flavour to the album,
especially with it’s punk sound. Finally, Let Me Disappear serves as an
enigmatic conclusion, inviting contemplation not just over the this
track, but over the whole album itself.
Ignore Yourself by The Chronic Sleepers is more than just an album
though, it's a grungy-punk journey through the intricate fabric of human
experience, which is beautifully woven by the band through its own
unique creative prowess. The Chronic Sleepers have created a minor sonic
masterpiece that demands attention and appreciation for its raw
emotion, musical diversity, and cultural resonance. I enjoyed listening
to Ignore Yourself immensely and think it‘s a true gem. It offers a
thrilling and memorable listening experience that's both emotionally
resonant and endlessly enjoyable.
Nazvime to street punk s melodickým vokálom a inteligentnými textami. V týchto dňoch sa popri práci ďalej vzdelávam. Zaujíma ma live sound design. Teda plánovanie a nastavovanie veľkých zvukových PA Systémov. To chcem v budúcnosti naplno robiť. Medzi sedemdesiatymi a devedesiatymi rokmi vyrábali verné kópie Gibson gitár a basgitár. Takže skúšam, experimentujem s modernými snímačmi, šróbujem a sypem do toho peniaze...
Po presťahovaní do Prahy som pôsobil vo Flowers For Whores. Neskôr v Berlíne v Men Without God, Fat Mans War Face a Damager.
Neskôr som v Berlíne stretol Johna (spev, gitara v The Unmarked). Hral v kapele Berlin Blackouts.
Japonci to proste vedia nastaviť. Už viac ako dvadsať rokov používam Yamahu s aktívnymi snímačmi. Niesom ale spokojný s jej dizajnom. Mám radšej retro klasické dizajny. Bohužiaľ sa jej zatiaľ žiadna iná basgitara zvukovo nevyrovnala. Tak teraz experimentujem už so spomínanými Greco basgitarami. Čo sa týka aparátu, používam odjakživa tranzistorový aparát Fender Bassman. 350W. K tomu dva repráky – 1x15“ a 4x10“ Fender.
Máme vonku EP „Homage To Our Souls“. Je na ňom päť songov a vyšlo to na Nemeckom labeli Stay Sick! Records. Vyšlo to v podobe 10“ Vinyl Platne.
EP sme nahrali v trojici. Ja, John (gitara, spev) a Jan (bicie). Malo to inú energiu. Má to iný punc. Naspieval s nami doprovodné vokály a v songu Shake The Crown vystruhol super harmónie v refrénoch.
Niesom tvorivá sila kapely The Unmarked.
Ktorú skladbu, a ktorý text vlastnej kapely by si vyzdvihol ?
Textovo mám asi najbližšie k pesničke No Home.
Najdivokejšie to bolo v Košiciach. Chodili sme tam vlakom a vláčili sme aparáty. Kupovali sme si skupinové lístky. Pozbierali sa ľudia z Bratislavy, vybavila sa skupinová zľava a išlo sa. Spacáky a spali sme u niekoho na podlahe. Ľudia vo vlaku nás museli nenávidieť. Boli sme hluční, vyvádzali sme hovadiny. Prezliekali sme sa do divných kostýmov a sadali sme si k cudzím ľuďom do kupé. Sledovali sme ich reakcie.
Aká je realita teraz? Keď som začal hrať v The Unmarked, mal som asi trojročnú dcérku a bol som doma.
August“. Trvalo to peknú chvíľku, kým jej to zaplo. No čo už,...už niesu spolu.
Čo chystáš v blízkej budúcnosti?
Odpoviem skôr čo chystáme ako kapela. Tento piatok 15.9. hráme v Prahe v klube 007 spoločne s 29. August. Tam hrá Krivic. Gitarista z Abhorrence.
14.10. Potom sa trochu odmlčíme. Plán je dopísať novú dosku a natočiť videoklip. Zároveň už bookujeme koncerty na budúci rok.
Cítiš sa byť súčasťou domácej scény ?
Do istej miery áno.
Nieje to moja tvorba. Bolo to dosť negatívne, neisté obdobie. My chceme ľuďom dodávať nádej.
Musí to byť uveritelné. Musí z toho sršať energia. Je to kurva punkrock! Musí to byť nahlas.
29. August. Super kapela.
Motto/obľúbený citát prípadne odkaz na záver.
Veritas Aequitas. Pravda a spravodlivosť. Ďakujem veľmi za priestor. Rob to ďalej. Rob to dobre. Je fajn že podporuješ scénu!!! Príď do Velryby na koncert.
Who are you, what do you do, and what interests you the most these days?
Hi I’m Alex the founder of the band, I play guitar and scream. I am most interested in music in this life, I listen to almost everything, I adore brutal death, doom, sludge, synthwave and trap. I'm a huge horror fan, I love exploitation movies, videogames, I'm very interested in insects, they delight me. In the future, my dream is to write a soundtrack for a video game or a slasher movie.
Which bands have you played in and what instruments did you play?
I played in 5 projects. my first project was noise ambient, I did almost everything there, except my friend did the covers. My second project was cybergrindcore, of which I was the only participant, I did absolutely everything there myself, now it's hard for me to take these projects seriously, it was part of the search for myself. A year ago I played bass in a black metal band, but our paths diverged. I also did a horrorcore trap, but my main project in life is Opium Warlock, it started as a one-man band in 2018, and then in 2020 I found other members and we became a live band.
What equipment/gear do you use and how satisfied are you with it?
I use Orange crush 120, I play right in poweramp, my guitar is Epiphone Sg, I'm satisfied with the guitar sound that I have, I also use a custom distortion pedal that a former guitarist made for me, a couple of delay effects and that's it, I like everything, although of course it always seems that it's possible to make our sound heavier
Tell me about your latest recording - how it was created, and who collaborated on it and how was it received by the fans?
Our last album has not yet been released, it was the longest and most difficult work in my life, this is the first album that I did not make completely myself, the first album with the band, and it was also our first album that was recorded in a professional studio (if you are in Prague and want to record some metal, I highly advise Dödsmürd Studio, this dude is a real pro and knows how to approach musicians), we did all the previous releases ourselves, so this is a very important step for me, finally I have an authentic, live recording that can represent our concert sound. I hope doom metal and sludge fans will appreciate it
What influences you the most in your creative process?
Most of all I am inspired by life and death, life is an amazing thing and you never know when and how it will end, nature is also very inspiring. I am also inspired by the aesthetics of the 70s and 90s, it seems to me that these were stylish times, and of course I am inspired by other musical projects, the zeal of people to create, and to do it not for money, but to feel alive, this is real magic.
Which song and lyrics would you highlight?
Buddha's Dealer is the most important track on the album for me, it was on my last release in 2019 and I think it was the first good track that I composed, we re-recorded it on the new album and with a new sound I think it sounds awesome, I wrote it during a very difficult and depressive period of my life when I had no hope at all and I was at the bottom like never before, I couldn't understand why I live and what I do, I don't even know how to explain it, but this song is very important to me
What were your musical ambitions when you started, and what is the reality now?
When I started, my ambitions were as follows, I wanted to create a psychedelic doom album and put it on the Internet and for at least 10 people to listen to it, for me music is a kind of diary of my life, nothing has changed since then, although more than 10 people listened to us, which I am incredibly glad about
Can you share an interesting story from the life of your band?
The most interesting story that happened to us was when we went to Josefstadt it was a mini version of Brutal Assault after covid. I went there to listen to Belzebong, it's one of my favorite bands and one of those bands that made me start playing doom in the first place. We met them and gave them a grinder in the form of an egg, after their concert I caught the pick of their guitarist, although I was incredibly stoned and drunk, and a year later we had the opportunity to play with them in Prague, it was one of the best days in my life, the day when I realized that I was not doing music in vain, by the way, they had our grinder :)
What do you have planned in the near future?
Our plans for the near future: the release of the album. Right after that, we plan to start writing new material and play wherever we have the opportunity. Now we are a completely new band because all the past members have left, I am the only one who remains. So I hope the new participants will breathe in new ideas and energy
Do you feel like you are part of the local music scene?
Yes, I feel like a part of the local doom scene, doom is unfortunately more dead than alive here, but we have a lot of high-quality death and black metal bands.
What emotion or reaction do you want to evoke with your music?
I think it's subjective, everyone perceives music in their own way, but I personally would like people to be blown away by us.
Do you try to align your creative work with something or differentiate yourself from something else?
Strangely enough, we play very conservative music, everything has been invented by Black Sabbath for a long time, but I'm trying very hard to make our band special, I'm trying to find our atmosphere and our vibe, I think we managed to achieve this on the new album
Do you have nostalgia for any retro genre(s) or decade(s)?
I miss the 2000s, the times when I was a kid and metal was played on TV, it was a great time when I was little, I listened to Korn and Slipknot on MTV, and in general metal seems to have developed for the last time, then there were so many cool bands. Many old-school metalheads will deny it but it was a golden era, it was the last time when metal called a huge number of fans from among "normal" people. I believe that metal will not die, and I very much expect it to return in a new form.
Which current trends within subcultures do you like, and which ones annoy you?
It seems to me that with the advent of the Internet, subcultures as such have mixed and dissolved into each other, I don't even know what to answer this question, personally I don't consider myself to be a subculture, I'm just a dude who makes metal.
What is your personal boundary beyond which you are not willing to accept an artist?
When the creator believes that his point of view is the only true one and tries to propagandize something, in my subjective opinion this is wrong, people should feel art with their rotten soul and draw your own conclusions.
Which sound (studio, album/band), artwork (album cover), and music video impressed you the most recently?
I really liked the Fleshwater band, these guys sound like modern deftones, I missed a similar sound, I found them by chance and it was great. I also really liked the band "Those poor bastards", it's satanic country or something, our new bassist showed me this band, and it was fantastic. The music video that blew my mind is a new Epicardiectomy music video, these dudes are fucking legends of Czech slamming brutal death, their new work looks better and scarier than many horror films I've watched this year and the cover of their new ep looks stylish as fuck to me, I love slamming brutal death like I said.
Music album, book, movie, TV series, computer game, tattoo studio, and beer that you recommend. What is your vice ?
I advise you to listen to the Album of the Negative Slug - Knee-deep in Raw Savage, it's a mixture of sludge and grindcore, very nihilistic and dirty music, the sludge we've been waiting for and deserved. The best book I've read in my life was Victor Hugo's Les miserables, it's a very melancholic, beautiful and cruel story, the best book I've read. The film that I recommend is the original Texas chainsaw massacre of 1974, this is my favorite horror movie, I would also advise you to watch the movie X, this is essentially a tribute to the Texas massacre, shot very stylishly and pays homage to the classics. I think that the best video game that has ever been released is The last Of Us, when I finish it, it caused a storm of emotions in me and made me think, this does not happen so often, especially when it comes to AAA games, which are mainly attractions, this game is art, the highest point of artistic presentation in interactive format, of beer I will recommend Czech classics, this is Branik, the cheapest beer that is here, it tastes like a sludge, cheap and very evil. My main vice is probably Drugs, Sex and Rock’n’Roll.
What is the best recurring event that you look forward to attend ?
Definitely this is a Brutal Assault, this place is like metal Disneyland, it's perfect, I want to die there, and of course I hope that one day I will be able to share the stage with Belzebong again.
Is there anyone on the local (or global) scene with whom you would like to read an interview on Jablka ďaleko od stromu?
Negative Slug from Croatia
Motto/favorite quote or message at the end.
“Never Try”- Charles Bukowski, Thank you so much for your interest in our band, and I can't wait for the release of your compilation, metal will always be alive, subscribe to our social networks, the new album will be very soon and it will be better than everything we did before, Satan bless you.
Right from the get-go, it’s clear that the Zvolen based Demonic-eyed are seasoned musicians and know their way around a recording studio. The opening track Duality has a crisp sound and is played instrumentally with a raw beat. To be honest, I don’t know what to expect so far, it sounds really good, but it’s the following track that makes me do a double-take. Blood like water has amazing instrumentation and riffs, but hearing the vocals for the first time at this point raises my earlobes. Don’t get me wrong, the singer belts it out like a pro, but there is something reminiscent of Motorhead or Venom. No matter, I like what I hear. Odhoďte zbrane (Throw Down Your Weapons) is more of turn towards post-hardcore with elements of thrash and scrap metal. This track, as with all of them on the album, grabs your attention and makes it difficult to let go. You might get what I mean by tracks like Inkvizícia (Inquisition) and Into the depths, compositions that contain raw guitar tones combined with gritty vocals that are delivered with an intense ferocity, painting a vivid picture of a dystopian world. This album is a headbanger’s delight that leaves you craving more.
And if I can go back a moment to the vocals, Luboshio (vocals and guitars) can be described as equal parts commanding and aggressive. So, even though I did feel some comparisons to Lemmy in the track above, in fact, I have to admit that the singer’s vocals are at a completely different level, ranging with spans from guttural growls to piercing screams that perfectly complement the sonic onslaught of the music.
This is a band with a wide range of diversity that proves they are not just a one-trick pony. Songs like Ochranca (Protector) and An Opportunist incorporate melodic, albeit still heavy elements amidst the chaos, demonstrating the band’s ability to craft intense and original hooks and beats. And speaking of hooks (or on this case, being hooked), Feťák (Junkie) seems to delve into a theme of resilience and the never-ending battle against conformity and those who are marginalised by the forces of modern society. This track demonstrates the band’s musical abilities best, as they focus on the precision of their instruments, with each member contributing equally to the controlled chaos and freneticism of their sound.
Demonic-eyed4 is definitely one of those hidden gems that will leave a lasting impression and serve as well as a testament to a thriving hardcore and metal scene from an unexpected corner of the world like Zvolen, Slovakia. The band knows their way around a studio with commendable production that captures a live-energy sound through expert mixing and mastering. Hats off to those who take their work seriously. Grab your earplugs and prepare for a wild ride!
1. Ako došlo k spolupráci so Suicidal Solitude na poslednom albume "Life Goes On"?
Ahoj, předem bych chtěl všechny pozdravit a pochválit tvůj blog, protože podobně laděná záležitost u nás v ČR chybí a to je škoda!
Ale teď k otázce. No k spolupráci došlo těžce “neblackmetalově” a to prostřednictvím domluvy na Instagramu.
Koncept by mohl znít takto.
8. Posledný videoklip, album hod song, ktorý si si točil nonstop dokola ?
Jak jsem už říkal, tak mám široký záběr hudby, kterou poslouchám, poslední dobou často poslouchám Ramones a jejich skladbu Poison Heart, pohrávám si s myšlenkou coveru a taky poslední dobou dost jedu Johnyho Cashe, Johna Denvera a jiné country. A ano poslouchám i country, kde jinde bych bral inspiraci na ty teskné melodie!!
9. Filmová tvorba - naj horror, komédia a niečo pri čom si poplačem ?
Horror? Tam bych to viděl na Osvícení, skvělý film a ještě lepší knížka. Komedie? A doják?
Perfektní námět a dobré změny tempa.
Slyším Sisters of Mercy s krásně uchylným videoklipem, hudebně jsi mi nabídnul samé skvělé věci a tuhle část rozhovoru jsem si užil.
Rolling Stones!
Určitě Franta Štorm, Necrocock by mi tam dělal hrozný věci s tělesnými otvory!!!
Not long ago, the Ukrainian duo Zapaska (Pavlo Nechitaylo and Jana
Shpachynska) played alongside their Slovak counterparts Longital at the
Pink Whale in Bratislava. And as much as I would love to review this
performance, unfortunately I can't. Why? Well, for one thing, I wasn't
there. I kick myself for missing them (both bands actually). Zapaska is
not new to performing in Slovakia, in fact, they have built up a
sizeable audience with fans since performing at the Pohoda festival in
2014. They returned after a long delay to Pohoda again in 2023 and
continuously tour around their home country and Europe. And as the
final days of summer approach, the old Florkster finds himself once
again in the hills of Western Ukraine, spending a week visiting old
friends and making new ones, as well as getting some much needed dental
work.
And as I begin to eat my second helping of vareniki (or perogies as
we call them in English), a feeling of hope and nostalgia overcomes me,
something these days I only experience here, in Ukraine. Perhaps it's
the environment I am immersed in, where the Carpathian hills leave my
adopted home of Slovakia and extend for a brief moment as they curve
south and then east, rising mightily at their final destination in
Transylvania. I think about all the bands I've reviewed since joining
Jablka, with all the tales of witches and demons who dwell in the
Carpathians, and the trees that conceal their secrets. I've always
enjoyed and appreciated the incorporation of folk elements in music,
whether it is black metal or pop or whatever. Today, however, I am
listening to Zapaska, with their 2016 album Pomalu (Step by Step)
playing the duo's blend of dream-pop, jazz and folklore from my
bluetooth speaker.
If you have never listened to Zapaska, I encourage you to do so. They
have a couple previous Ep releases and two full-length album releases
(including Pomalu) since they began around 2009. Pomalu begins with the
title track, a well-thought composition that is simple in nature, but
with intricate instrumentation and delicate vocals. This is such a cool
song, both jazzy and bluesy with Jana's vocals adding touches of beauty
and depth in the refrains. The album maintains a level throughout where
each composition could be considered the best track on the album. Harno
(Beautiful) follows and is full of washes of sound from the keyboards
and pedals with the light acoustic guitar sounds creating a celestial
landscape of birds and flowers, much like here in Zakarpatia.
Zapaska do not employ real drums in their music, but rather a drum
machine and other percussions. And they make this work well as it hardly
sounds electronic, instead just a subtle background beat. All of the
songs are sung in Ukrainian, although they have sung in English in the
past. To be honest, I am not quite sure which language the final track
Generosity is sung in, it may be English, but no matter, it is beautiful
as it is.
Whether Zapaska have plans for a new album release this year or next,
I cannot tell you nor find any information at the moment. But they tour
frequently and 2023 has been a busy year for them and you should be
able to find out from their website where their next perforfance takes
place. For the moment, I am content listening to Pomalu. Songs like
Chuhajstra, Zapytajsia, and Vikna Vidchynyty are catchy and addictive,
receiving frequent clicks of the repeat button. I also need to note that
Pavlo too is an amazing singer (Svarka) and thus their chemistry and
resulting chemical reactions heard in the compositions are more than
magical. Pomalu is sung predominantly by Jana, but I think this is more
because the songs are better suited for her voice and style. Or perhaps
this is just a natural part of the evolution of their sound in general,
either way I like it. The remaining songs of the 10-track album are all
outstanding on their own.
And so, as I look out the window towards the low rolling hills of
Zakarpatia here in Western Ukraine, I can't think of a better balance
going on. The beauty of this music only enhances the beauty of Ukraine
and is full of hope the country and world needs right now. I press the
repeat button once more, but this time from the beginning of Pomalu.
Listening to Zapaska is much like the vareniki I just devoured. I want a
second helping.
Late one night, I stumbled upon this group purely by accident. I was
either looking for a cat video on YouTube or maybe a Tangerine Dream
clip or something citrus, in any case, it was serendipitous that I
landed on this Wales-based duo with their dark and ambient sounds full
of creaky doors and droning backgrounds (like a John Carpenter movie).
The song that I landed on in particular was called Ask Owl, the opening
track to TangerinecaT’s latest album Glass (released in April, 2022).
And, in addition to the ominous 2-note drone one can hear throughout Ask
Owl (sometimes more notes can be heard on other tracks, and this sound
is made from a Western-Ukrainian instrument called a duda, something
like a Scottish bagpipe), listeners will also notice the sounds of
shattered glass, like footsteps on a concrete floor crunching on a
broken bottle or vase. I should also note that the album centres around
the theme of broken glass on a stone floor after the band recorded
Something Broke Inside (which is, by the way, one of the coolest tracks
on this album).
If you read the description of the album on the bandcamp website, you
will learn that the songs are all part of a larger story about a man
named Eugene and his struggles to survive in the world (poverty, mental
health, violence, etc.). He comes from Ukraine and is a survivor of the
Chornobyl disaster. And, from what I can gather, he’s ended up in
several dark places. Moreover, in addition to the eerie sounds of Ask
Owl, where the out-of-tune fiddle paints a picture of a barren forest on
a haunted night, conjuring images of bare branches of trees swaying and
sending shivers up your spine, listeners are told an insightful yet
haunting story of one man’s personal journey to the depths of hell and
back.
Each track seizes my attention, especially the different vocal
harmonisations used. On the second track Anti-Lullaby, Zhenia
Purpurovsky and Runa de Luna (Runa composed this track and is a guest on
this album) unite to create a dark, dark energy that sets the tone for
the rest of the album (Paul Chilton, the other member of TangerinecaT,
sings on this track as well). Yet despite the chilling darkness, there
is an apparent element of beauty that listeners will also perceive. The
music is much more than avant-garde or experimental, it is also
well-rehearsed and crafted, creating an atmosphere of ghoulish ambience
with the sounds of the duda and broken glass present in each track. This
is evident in Mass of the Black Cats and Molfar (which is partially
sung in Zhenia’s native Ukrainian). The latter track introduces the
creaky violin once again, yet the beat of this song is also lively at
moments. My two favourites on Glass are Hereafter (a beautiful
instrumental) and Something Broke Inside (the harmonies are epic here…
And screaming one more time), which is a magnificent tune that
incorporates the full beauty of the group’s sound with Eugene’s
difficult journey and eventual healing (yes, the whole album is
amazingly beautiful, TangerinecaT create colossal beauty out of
darkness). I love the power in this track, especially the sounds of the
duda (or is it a violin?), so full of bleakness and dark, death energy,
but performed ironically with a beat. The album ends perfectly with
Spell, both Paul and Zhenia (especially Zhenia) sending hope to the
listener in their beautiful vocals.
And so, my inability to type an understandable command into the
YouTube search bar was providential. Glass is truly a treasure chest of
original compositions and sounds I have never heard before, and I am
going to keep this duo within my radar for a long time. If you are an
adventurous type, TangerinecaT is worth your attention. Their ability to
transform the listener into the world of a desperate and lost
individual in a world with similar ailments is a mesmerising experience,
one that I myself won’t forget. Glass speaks volumes regarding the
current state of the world with its thought-provoking sounds and lyrics
and should resonate within you for a long time afterwards after
listening to it.
As the warm temperatures return to us here Central Europe, the heat
seems to have a way of infusing its intensity into the punk rock music
scene. And I’m glad for this as punk and its anarchic vibes and messages
are what I need right now, especially with the world being the way it
is these days, with its newfound state of new normal that confuses many
of us to death. And so, with a backdrop of sweltering days and balmy
nights (at least for this Canadian), the rebellious spirit of punk
resonates louder than ever with the August release of Šnečí Med (Snail
Honey) by the Prague-based group, Kurvy Češi (Fucking Czechs).
The album kicks off with Hezky (Nice), a track that immediately
establishes Kurvy Češi's louder-than-life identity. The distorted
guitars and frenetic drumming create an atmosphere of controlled chaos,
while the gritty vocals convey a sense of urgency. This is a
highly-appropriate song to begin with, it’s full of turbulent energy and
gets my blood flowing to a near-dangerous level. I can tell already at
this point that the goal of this album is to push the boundaries of
conventional punk to its limits. As I begin to craft this album review,
I can’t help but embrace the raw energy of the music as it mixes
beautifully with the fervor of a summer that refuses to be ignored.
Let’s just say that I‘m wondrously aware of how stimulated my senses
have become.
Čerti, Plamenya Tvoje Oči (Demons, Flames, and Your Eyes) showcases
the band's ability to blend noise elements with punk roots seamlessly.
Of course, neither the music nor vocals are flawless, otherwise, how
could we call what I’m listening to punk. But the juxtaposition of
dissonance and melody adds depth to the track, creating an immersive
experience that invites listeners to explore the nuances of each layer.
Feťák Bahno (Mud Junkie) follows suit, allowing this track to round off a
trio of standouts at the intial stage of Šnečí Med, delving further
into the realm of experimental soundscapes. In fact, this song really
captivated me, its fiery atmosphere full of cool guitar riffs and vocals
reminding me of sweat-drenched crowds and chaotic mosh pits, a
more-than-necessary catharsis in the form of a primal detox. Gotta love
it.
But the fun doesn‘t stop here. Tracks like Tribalus Nemakačenko Fuchs
(No idea how to translate this) and Ohavné malé ohavné (Nasty Little
Hideous Ones) fully maximize the ever-present cacophonous nature of this
album, and the band knows how to use cacophony as an artistic tool. You
can hear it in the worldviews of Patlal Motal and tones of Magion, as
well as on the other tracks, which are all examples of the band's
outlook and support of social movements in the noise punk genre. These
two tracks alone are some of the wildest your ears will ever be treated
to.
A notable highlight is also the track Šnečí Med. This title track is a
culmination of Kurvy Češi's musical vision. It encapsulates their
mastery of blending aggressive punk instrumentation with unexpected
shifts in dynamics. I totally got off on its raw energy and passion, and
placing it at the end of the album makes you appreciate the
destination, even though the journey getting there was more than amazing
on its own.
And my prognosis? Kurvy Češi deliver an album that not only
challenges conventions, but also demands active engagement. It can
hardly be called background music— it's an experience where listeners
can fully immerse themselves in all of the clever arrangements and sonic
landscapes while taking a joy ride of sorts through the last days of
the hot summer months. Definitely a must-listen-to for any fan of punk
music who loves a band that pushes itself over the limits while all the
time feeling no guilt, just pure pleasure while doing so.
Stangarigel tvorí duo hudobníkov vystupujúcich pod pseudonymami
Lesodiv (gitara, basa, synťák) a Stalagnat (spev, bicie).
zoskupenie domácich BM spolkov so zvučnými menami, ktorým sa v poslednej
Malokarpatan, Krolok a Remmirath.
Trojskladbové EP Metafyzika barbarstva je druhým počinom nadväzujúcim
na minuloročný album Na severe srdca. Materiál o dĺžke niečo vyše 20
minút vyšiel v júli 2023 na belgickom labeli Medieval Prophecy Records v
štyroch rôznych edíciách – 2 rôzne vinyly, kazeta (mimochodom už
vypredaná) a CD.
Prvá skladba skladba Modré kryštalické sály začína dramatickým
slákovým introm, ktoré skvele navodzuje atmosféru Jakubiskom šmrncnutého
stredovekého hororu. Intro sa pretaví do rýchlejšieho blacku so zvukom
založeným na nahallovaných gitarách a riffoch hraných unisono so synth
podkladmi čo ako celok vytvára epický dojem skladby. Vokály a bicie
používajú tiež hall a celkový zvuk tým pádom naberá echo (𝔱𝔞𝔧𝔬𝔪𝔫ý𝔠𝔥 𝔷á𝔨𝔲𝔱í 𝔷𝔞𝔡𝔶𝔪𝔢𝔫𝔢𝔧 𝔱𝔪𝔞𝔳𝔢𝔧 𝔧𝔞𝔰𝔨𝔶𝔫𝔢 𝔬ž𝔦𝔞𝔯𝔢𝔫𝔢𝔧 𝔩𝔢𝔫 𝔣𝔞𝔨ľ𝔞𝔪𝔦 𝔭𝔯𝔦𝔪𝔦𝔱í𝔳𝔫𝔶𝔠𝔥 𝔟𝔞𝔯𝔟𝔞𝔯𝔬𝔳 𝔨𝔩𝔞ň𝔞𝔧ú𝔠𝔦𝔠𝔥 𝔰𝔞 𝔰𝔳𝔬𝔧í𝔪 𝔭𝔬𝔥𝔞𝔫𝔰𝔨ý𝔪 𝔪𝔬𝔡𝔩á𝔪). Štruktúra sklaby
strieda rýchle tempá, trioly a strednotempový „bumčvach“, aby v strede
vyústila do atmosférického rituálneho intermezza. Záver patrí zbesilému
opakovaniu dvoch monotónnych motívov, ktoré utvrdzujú
pohansko-primitívny feeling. Jazda preludov decembrovým nebom je druhou
skladbou a je to úlet do čistej atmošky. Jednoduchý klávesový motív so
samplami vetra, zvončekov a trúb mi z nejakého dôvodu evokuje retro 80’s
premenovali na Hades Almighty) a pokračovanie skladby s využitím prvkov
spomenutých už pri prvej skladbe. Dôrazný rytmus, istá dávka
monotónnosti vyplývajúca z repetície motívov a zároveň povznášajúco
skladieb, spev) a melódií tvorených gitarou alebo synťákmi, tzv.
„riffing“.
povedať nič iné než „Well done“.
Justin:
Pri ostatnych projektoch mavam konkretnejsiu predstavu o hudbe a
konkretnejsie inspiracie. Pri ahoj nikdy nevies co vznikne, riffy
prinesene na skusku vzdy dopadnu uplne inak. Takze len nieco podvedome,
na predstavy a inspiracie som tuto zanevrel
R: To uz ja ani nepamatam, niektore tie songy vznikli pred tromi rokmi.
slovenska. Celé sa to udialo hlavne vďaka partii z holandského DIY
festu, kde nás zavolali už minulé leto a aby sme sa tam dostali
potrebovali sme vyplniť cestu tam a späť.
podstate definovala sama. Začali sme doma v kubíku, potom nasledoval
Martin, Krakov, Olomouc, Praha, Plzeň, Mannheim, Lille, Nijmegen, Linz a
sme toho fakt mega veľa - všade plno lásky a vegánskeho jedla. Možno sa
raz hecneme a vydáme nejaký zin alebo cestopis z tour. To by sme ale
museli poriadne zaloviť v pamäti a fotkách v mobiloch.
Justin :
Tak dajak. Paradoxne bol najprijemnejsi zazitok mozno cigaretkovy hotbox
v dodavke.
specialna a intenzivna atmosfera takze vsetko bolo super a siel by som s
nimi na vylet znova
R: Mali sme tour, aj vole mali tour a mali
sme par koncertov spolu (Plzen, Mannheim, DIY fest). Zazili sme vsetky
III. Aké máte plány na leto?
Kočo:
Chceli sme trochu pokojnejšie leto ako minulý rok. V podstate počas
leta máme len nejaké 3 koncerty. Brno, Praha a Košice. Inak kľud,
pojdeme na nejaké srdcové festivaly a skúsime si oddýchnuť.
Justin:
:D Chcel by som trochu klud, posledny polrok bol fakt velmi stresovy a
vsetko co si teraz prajem je aby napatia opadli.
R: fluff & ffud, a potom par koncertov kde hrame….inak iba kupanie, grilovanie, vylety a kamaratenie
Alica: keď zapadne slnko mám sa väčšinou dobre, inak sa potím
2. Kde v Trnave majú najlepšiu čokoládovú zmrzku?
Kočo: Odkedy kamoška zavrela Gio som v trnave zmrzlinu nemal. Sem tam si kúpim vegan magnum keď majú v jednote v zľave

7. Zvíťazí pravda a láska nad lžou a nenávisťou?
