ZmyrnaSaeculum Mysticum (EP Split /w Silent Thunder, 2023)

By Tom/EZR

Prineste vaše dcéry a zlato do kláštora, inak...!! Príbehy ako tieto podnecujú moju chuť nechať sa presiaknuť stredovekom, či už v podaní akademikov Daniely Dvořákovej a Františka Grausa alebo domácich autorov historických „pulp fiction“ Joža Nižňanského či Ďura Červenáka. Ale späť k Zmyrne.

Hudobne kapela nadväzuje na predchádzajúcu tvorbu. Strednotempové pasáže, dôrazné riffy s výraznými basovými linkami, melodické chorály či pískanie a už spomínané hrdelné zavíjanie s vkusne pridaným hall efektom (v jednom momente mi moja knižnica kultúrnych asociácií dokonca na sekundu predhodila St.Christophe z prvotiny Wanastowych Vjecí).

The band Zmyrna hardly needs an introduction. I already covered part of their story when reviewing their previous EP, released in 2022 as a split with Germany's Nebran. This Czech-Slovak (or Slovak-Czech, if you prefer) collective has managed, through its distinctive black metal interpretation of medieval mysticism, to establish itself remarkably quickly both at home and abroad. Their growing reputation is reflected not only in the number of concerts they've played, but also in the multiple pressings of their first two EPs, several of which sold out almost immediately after release. Judging by the news surrounding their third EP – the one reviewed here – history is repeating itself. The 12-inch split with the American band Silent Thunder, released by the Chinese (yes, Chinese!) label Goatowa Rex, was sold out before I had even decided whether I was willing to support the Chinese economy in yet another way. Never mind, I'll patiently wait for a more local edition.

The new material consists of three canticles, traditionally titled in Latin as Canticum Decimum, Canticum Undecimum, and Canticum Duodecimum. According to the album credits, most of the material, including the intro, was recorded live in a studio in Žilina, with only the vocals and additional guitar layers overdubbed later. In today's world of endless drum editing and microscopic rhythm corrections, that approach feels almost revolutionary. Whoever hasn't spent days in a studio polishing every tiny imperfection, raise your hand...

The artwork, based on M.'s concept and painted by Robert von Ritter, depicts a mysterious ritual performed by hooded monks somewhere inside the dark chambers of a Gothic monastery. While reading the lyrics to the tenth canticle, I couldn't help imagining which monastery it might be. The text turns out to be a transcription of a threatening letter sent to the citizens of Bardejov in 1493, demanding they deposit gold either at the Kraków monastery or at the Carthusian monastery in Lechnica (today's Červený Kláštor), otherwise terrible consequences would follow. Sung in period language, the lyrics remain surprisingly intelligible despite the characteristic guttural howls that have become one of Zmyrna's trademarks.

The remaining two canticles draw from the Žilina Town Book of 1473 and deal with kurewstwie (whores) and czarodiegniczych (witchcraft). Knowing this background adds considerably to the experience. After all, who hasn't occasionally dreamed of red-hot inquisitorial tongs tearing flesh from a body shattered on the wheel, or of being slowly impaled before the laughing pagans of the Ottoman Empire? Bring your daughters and your gold to the monastery... or else. Stories like these make me want to immerse myself in the Middle Ages, whether through the academic works of Daniela Dvořáková and František Graus or the historical pulp adventures of Jozef Nižňanský and Juraj Červenák. But back to Zmyrna.

Musically, the band continues exactly where its previous recordings left off. Mid-tempo passages, commanding riffs supported by prominent bass lines, melodic choral sections, whistling motifs, and those trademark guttural howls tastefully enhanced with reverb. At one point my personal library of cultural associations even threw me a brief flashback to St. Christophe from Wanastowi Vjecy's debut album. The guitars feature that unmistakable Euronymous-style tremolo phrasing, occasionally giving way to slower passages where the notes are allowed to ring with beautiful sustain. The tenth canticle even includes a tasteful whammy-bar guitar solo, while the twelfth introduces a welcome touch of dungeon synth. My personal favourite is Canticum Undecimum, largely thanks to its haunting whistle motif, which managed to cast a beautifully melancholic spell over an otherwise miserable October afternoon.

Rather than assigning the record a numerical score, I'd rather borrow Hippocrates' medieval theory of the four bodily humours. Saeculum Mysticum is thoroughly soaked in black bile, the humour responsible for melancholy. And that is precisely what gives Zmyrna's latest work its unmistakable character. Highly recommended. And remember: memento mori, friends.
