#90 Flork Reviews: Demonic-eyed – 4 (2022)

Demonic-eyed – 4 (2022)

by Flork

Right from the get-go, it’s clear that the Zvolen based Demonic-eyed are seasoned musicians and know their way around a recording studio. The opening track Duality has a crisp sound and is played instrumentally with a raw beat. To be honest, I don’t know what to expect so far, it sounds really good, but it’s the following track that makes me do a double-take. Blood like water has amazing instrumentation and riffs, but hearing the vocals for the first time at this point raises my earlobes. Don’t get me wrong, the singer belts it out like a pro, but there is something reminiscent of Motorhead or Venom. No matter, I like what I hear.  Odhoďte zbrane (Throw Down Your Weapons) is more of turn towards post-hardcore with elements of thrash and scrap metal. This track, as with all of them on the album, grabs your attention and makes it difficult to let go. You might get what I mean by tracks like Inkvizícia (Inquisition) and Into the depths, compositions that contain raw guitar tones combined with gritty vocals that are delivered with an intense ferocity, painting a vivid picture of a dystopian world. This album is a headbanger’s delight that leaves you craving more.

And if I can go back a moment to the vocals, Luboshio (vocals and guitars) can be described as equal parts commanding and aggressive. So, even though I did feel some comparisons to Lemmy in the track above, in fact, I have to admit that the singer’s vocals are at a completely different level, ranging with spans from guttural growls to piercing screams that perfectly complement the sonic onslaught of the music.

This is a band with a wide range of diversity that proves they are not just a one-trick pony. Songs like Ochranca (Protector) and An Opportunist incorporate melodic, albeit still heavy elements amidst the chaos, demonstrating the band’s ability to craft intense and original hooks and beats. And speaking of hooks (or on this case, being hooked), Feťák (Junkie) seems to delve into a theme of resilience and the never-ending battle against conformity and those who are marginalised by the forces of modern society. This track demonstrates the band’s musical abilities best, as they focus on the precision of their instruments, with each member contributing equally to the controlled chaos and freneticism of their sound.

Demonic-eyed 4 is definitely one of those hidden gems that will leave a lasting impression and serve as well as a testament to a thriving hardcore and metal scene from an unexpected corner of the world like Zvolen, Slovakia. The band knows their way around a studio with commendable production that captures a live-energy sound through expert mixing and mastering. Hats off to those who take their work seriously. Grab your earplugs and prepare for a wild ride!
