Nightmare and death are the two leading words of the first song Enshrouded by the veil of night from the eponymous single by Aeon Winds – a very active Slovak atmospheric black metal act. These lyrics describe fear of the night, a terrible fear that hurts not only the mind but is almost physical. That kind of fear which transcends beyond its abstract existence, materializes, and harms your body causing you suffering and painful death. In that moment your existence vanishes in a “bottomless void”. When I read these lyrics, I instantly think of a painting by Zbigniew Bielak “Lawless darkness” which he made for one of Watain’s albums. I’d say this depiction of terror and nothingness is the essential pillar of the powerful atmosphere that Aeon Winds create in combination with icy cold sound production which in all honesty – if this song was included on Emperor’s In the nightside eclipse, I could not tell the difference. Don’t get me wrong – this is an ultimate compliment.
The second song Sepulchral whispers opens with keyboard intro and the sound takes me back to the awesome Hecate Enthroned’s album The slaughter of innocence, a requiem for the mighty. The song is slow paced – a horror lullaby with rich layers of guitars (both electric and acoustic), synths and male chanting. Lyrically this one takes me to one of H.P.Lovecraft’s dream inspired stories where desperate creatures wander through forgotten ruins of ancient tombs. Musically this is not a typical song per-se, it’s rather a slow march or a funeral dirge. Both songs are from the upcoming anniversary edition of the album “Those Who Will Remain Silent Forever” which will be released in 2022.
