#66 Tom/EZR Reviews: Love My Science - Worn Out People (EP, 2022)

Love My Science - Worn Out People (EP 2022)

by Tom/EZR

So here I am sitting on my usual sofa in my usual backbone breaking position, thinking about how much bullshit will I still go through this week before it finally ends. I could write a fucking fat book about how tired and worn out I feel especially during February and March which are like two of my worst enemies and which keep returning every goddamn year again and again.

And considering my current state, I find somewhat little relief in reviewing EP Worn out people by Love My Science which was released digitally via band’s Bandcamp profile in January 2023. Love My Science is the electropunk/goth project of Ingrid Rudavská, who is an interesting character of Bratislava’s gothic underground scene – not just a musician but also a painter and a writer whose collection of short stories Afterparty (rel. 2020) I recommend to everyone who enjoys horror, suspense and a healthy dose of weird humor. As far as I am concerned Ingrid started her music career in deathrock band Hysteric Helen which released their debut CD in 2013. I saw the band in legendary Bratislava U-club in mid 2000’s which was the golden period for local goth rock scene and an aftermath of the third wave of goth rock which was started 10 years earlier by Marilyn Manson, NIN and Type O Negative

EP Worn Out People contains 5 songs of straightforward melodies, fast electronic beats and frantic female vocals… The first track “Applications” opens the EP in an electropunk / deathrock fashion with leading keyboard motive. The second track “Nie” (No) is fast and introduces an interesting use of saxophone that contrasts with Ministry-like machine rhythm. In “Option Control” I am feeling a bit of good old Depeche Mode influence and I really enjoy vocals and vocal melodies which are actually very interesting in all tracks. Fourth “Track” is another lo-fi tribute to 80’s synthwave and electro music. In the middle of this track vocals turn into more depressive / indie-alternative vibe which is best reflected in the final song “File” - my most favorite song on the EP. Simple song structure with catchy-punky melodies and Courtney Love-ish “fuck you asshole” attitude. I really like this stuff. Coming to an end of the EP, I have to conclude that it made me feel a little less worn out than approx. 17 minutes ago. This is all very diverse music with plenty of great influences and recorded’n’produced in a lo-fi fashion which still sounds pretty fresh and good. No complaints, I am most definitely a fan.
