Moonvampire - Weird Tales (EP 2023)
by Tom/EZR
Weird Tales is a four tracks EP released via Bandcamp by the enigmatic artist moonvampire who appears to be composing, recording, and releasing their atmospheric darkwave/goth music from one of Bratislava’s own bedrooms. As there hasn’t been much happening in this genre in Bratislava recently, this news is quite exciting for a city that was once known for its vibrant goth club scene.
The EP opens with two-minute track „Have You Feel the Night?“ which presents a melodic throwback to the steamy goth dancefloors of the 80’s, featuring a catchy melody composed of a well-structured combination of bass and guitar along with pleasing synth elements and sampled drums. The vocals are monotonous, more like recitation than singing, which suits the music perfectly. It’s very atmosperic, pleasantly dark and melancholic. The second track „Pathetic (Techno Remix)“ carries in the vibe of the first track, albeit with programmed bass and drums as it’s a techno remix. I give credit for a beautiful guitar play, which fits the the song’s overall mood splendidly. „The Sky Full of Bats“ once again features programmed bass, up/down-tuning synth and echoed whispering repeating the phrase „look at the sky, the sky full full of bats“, this time without the guitar. The final track „Afterlife“, begins with crows cawing, a simple bass riff (this time it sounds like real bass), and a cool synth melody, all leading into a catchy chorus. The verses are accompanied by vocals, followed by the return of the synth in the next chorus. It’s a straightforward yet powerful song structure, offering everything needed for a solid piece of catchy, atmospheric darkwave.
In conclusion I must admit I‘m instantly captivated by moonvampire’s production and eagerly anticipate their upcoming releases. Undoubtedly, an artist worth checking out.
