1. Who are you, what do you do, and what’s keeping you most interested these days?
Hi everybody, my name is Isthmaël Baudry I'm singer in Spleen XXX, in Love in cage (synth wave band), composer in Morphoex (experimental synthetic solo project), I'm photographer and I'm director.
Spleen XXX is a cold wave /post punk band.... I come from Rouen in Normandy (France). We released a second Spleen XXX album (on vinyl and cd) "Agony of a Shadow"on the French label Meidosem Records, which has recorded bands such as Martin Dupont, Guerre Froide, Collection d'Arnell Andréa... We are preparing a french Tour for September 2026.... And maybe an European tour...
2. The name Spleen XXX inevitably evokes Baudelaire’s Le Spleen de Paris (1869), with its themes of melancholy, alienation, and the urge to escape boredom and modern life. How do these ideas resonate with you in today’s France, and what kind of connection do you feel to Baudelaire 150 years later?
It is a good question… Spleen XXX is a reference about Spleen and ideal. Baudelaire is timeless by his poems and writings. He was also an art critic. He remains today, along with Arthur Rimbaud, one of the most influential French poets. However, the themes Baudelaire explored are darker and more mysterious. Our society is dark and selfish. I like the representation of darkness…I love the mystery….I love the symbolism poetry…. Poetry is always contemporary with our society.
.
3. Do you think Baudelaire’s figure of the flâneur would find inspiration in today’s Parisian banlieues triste?
Of course, the concrete is poetic and inspiring…. It is just an other reality…. The poor suburbs are very inspiring... The Parisian suburbans are also painted by the medias like very violent and sad... But it is not reality... It is more complex…. Don’t forget, there are too many wealthy suburbs of Paris like Auteuil, Boulogne, Neuilly…. We don’t live in the Parisian suburbans... But we live with the minorities without problems…
4. Do you think escapism, melancholy, and boredom can act as triggers for creativity? Which element in that mix is the most important — and which one might be missing?
I read a lot of Philip K. Dick novels, which suggest that there are multiple realities... I live in an other reality to escape at this real world which is very oppressing... Trump, poutine…. I can’t imagine the repression of Iranian people killed by the militia…. to get back to your question I am constantly searching for somewhere else to escape reality, so I am constantly creating texts, images, and videos. For me creativity, boredom and escapism are inseparable… all intrinsically linked. They are the driving forces of creation.
5. Why do you feel coldwave and goth are such natural vessels for these ideas? Have you ever imagined another genre that might express the same emotions equally well?
The post-punk a perfect music to explain , to exprim any romantic and depressing feelings. It’s not a simple question.. I cannot be neutral…. Because I listen this music since for my adolescence...
6. Spleen XXX comes from Rouen, an important medieval town in northwest France. How does it differ from Paris, and what particular flavor of melancholy or sadness do you feel is characteristic of this region?
Yes, exactly this a medieval city... It was in this city that Joan of Arc died burned at the stake. The city is divided in two by the Seine River. A rich, medieval right bank and a poorer left bank with concrete buildings; it's on this left bank where I live lol ! But from the description, one might think it's Bratislava lol !
Rouen is the capital of Normandy. It's the epicenter of Norman underground culture. Sordide Sentimental is an industrial cult label that originated in Rouen signed the bands like Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Tuxedomoon, Psychic TV
Paris is different, it's more luxurious, many parties many underground and cultural places…. Paris is really cool, but you have to be rich and wealthy…. If you're poor, live in Rouen; everything is cheaper there lol !!!
7. The band has a strong visual aesthetic, and I’ve noticed Isthmaël’s interest in black-and-white concrete and brutalist architecture, often featuring masked figures. This seems in contrast to medieval France. Where does this fascination with concrete come from, and how does it coexist with the presence of masked humans?
Before the internet, I traveled extensively throughout Eastern Europe by bus with my film camera. I didn't book any hotels; I wandered through towns and villages alone. My appreciation for Brutalist architecture surely stems from that. I've kept these images from those solitary journeys... Wandering, photographing...
These masked figures reflect allegories of silence, wandering, solitude, and above all, dreams and nightmares. The mask is the communication with the spirits, the fantastic and the unreal, Concrete symbolizes this antithesis and this concrete reality… It is important to have a strong visual aesthetic. Forging an identity means forging a difference...
8. The new album Agony of a Shadow is accompanied by three video clips. Could you share why you chose these particular songs for videos, and whether there is any connection or narrative linking them?
Yes, my congratulations for your pertinent question it is a visual trilogy about the oppression : ”the dislocation of the real” there is the reality/ irreality. This confusion with the fake news “in to the abyss” the drowning of the humanity with the perversity, the suffering and to finish “ Impact of iconography”. The image as a subject of oppression and harassment... We are subjected to the tyranny of the image. The horror of some teenagers who are harassed on social media... Sometimes there is no mercy...
9. There’s an eight-year gap between your first and second album, which is quite a long time. Can you tell us about the process of writing and creating the new album? Did you start with a specific idea, or did it evolve during these globally challenging years?
Time flies…. In eight years, I recorded albums with Love in Cage and Morphoex. I directed many music videos for the French dark scene and several experimental short films. The album should have been released earlier... But production issues caused a delay. The album was originally going to be called "Dislocation of the Real," but "Agony of a Shadow" seemed more in keeping with the photograph I took of children at the beach in Deauville, Normandy. The hardest part was selecting the tracks in a coherent way...
.
10. How is the creative collaboration between Isthmaël (Morphoex) and Stéphane G. (N.K.R.T)? How do you complement each other’s contributions in the writing and composing process?
Stéphane composed the music and I wrote the lyrics and directed the videos and took the photographs.
11. Do you share similar musical backgrounds, and do you have other experiences in making music outside of Spleen XXX?
Yes, we shared a passion of the french writer Albert Camus we were both fans of The Cure, Joy Division... But Stéphane stopped playing music at the end of the recording “Agony of a shadow”…
12. Does coldwave/goth have a strong scene in France, or do you feel more connected with the international scene?
The cold wave scene remains marginal, but it is more popular than it was ten years ago... But a network gradually forms, like a spider's web...
13. Do you plan international gigs with Agony of a Shadow? Is there any chance to see you playing live in Central or Eastern Europe?
I hope... Hope gives us the strength to exist….
14. Isthmaël, I know you’ve visited Bratislava — what was the occasion and what did you enjoy most about the city? Did you get a chance to explore our concrete residential jungle?
Yes, I loved very much Bratislava ….I loved much the famous brutalist bridge between the ancient city and the new city... (the Slovak National Uprising Bridge) But unfortunately I did not visit the modern side of Bratislava…. Sad... A regret... I preferred to visit Pezinok he he he For the white wine lol !
.
15. Are you familiar with any local bands or artists from Slovakia or Central/Eastern Europe? Did anything catch your attention during your visit?
Yes, I know a Slovak band The last days of Jesus !!! when I visited Bratislava I was struck by the religious fervor in the churches, whereas in France the churches are empty…
16. I’m a big fan of older Vincent Cassel films, especially Sheitan, Notre jour viendra, and Partisan. Do you have any personal recommendations for French cinema?
If you like Vincent Cassel, you have to see "Irreversible," a very violent and shocking film by the French director Gaspar Noé. It is not a movie for the children…
I love cinema. I directed three experimental short films that you can see on YouTube: "Phases" (a science fiction short film) "Robots"(I animated my kitchen robot lol) "Dreams and Lights" (when the dream transforms in nightmare)
I can recommend lots of French underground films like :
"Les Magnétiques" (2021) by Vincent Maël Cardona; “Innocence” (2002) by Lucile Hadzihalilovic ( very Strange); “Titane” and “Grave” by Julie Ducorneau; "Delicatessen" and "la cité des enfants perdus" by Jean Pierre Dionnet and Max Carrot (extraordinary!!!); “la vie réelle” directed Philippe Grandrieux (very very dark with an industrial music by Etant Données)…. And if you like a traumatizing movie it is “Martyrs” DIRECTED by Pascal Ogier… It is terrifying and horrible movie…I was very afraid lol ! Not for the children and adolescents lol
17. Which album, music video, or book has impressed you the most recently?
A novel ? the Hungarian master of the literature Lazslo Krasznahorkai "The melancholy of resistance” It is an extraordinary novel…. I READ very much Philipp K.Dick….
An album ? A french unknown and underestimated band the band is Unison on the french label (Lentonia Records) the one and only album…. Nobody knows... Sad… It is an amazing album…. The sounds of the guitars are incredible... The female ans ethereal vocal is magnificent…
I love the outsiders…
About cinema, I'm a huge David Lynch fan. Right now I'm re-watching Twin Peaks; it's still just as incredible….
.
18. Is there an artist or band you’d like to see interviewed on JDØS?
Yes, the American goth band Lycia !!! I love very much this band….

============================================================================
1. Kto si, čomu sa venuješ a čo ťa momentálne najviac zaujíma?
Ahojte všetci, volám sa Isthmaël Baudry. Som spevák v Spleen XXX a v Love in Cage (synth wave kapela), skladateľ v Morphoex (experimentálny syntetický sólový projekt), som fotograf a režisér.
2. Názov Spleen XXX nevyhnutne evokuje Baudelaireov Le Spleen de Paris (1869) s témami melanchólie, odcudzenia a úniku z nudy a moderného života.
Samozrejme.
My v parížskych banlieues nežijeme, ale žijeme medzi menšinami bez problémov.
Mesto delí rieka Seina na dve časti: bohatý stredoveký pravý breh a chudobnejší ľavý breh s betónovou zástavbou — tam žijem ja (lol).
LOL
Paríž je iný — luxusnejší, veľa párty, veľa undergroundových a kultúrnych miest… Paríž je super, ale musíš byť bohatý. Ak si chudobný, ži v Rouene — všetko je lacnejšie (lol).
7. Kapela má silnú vizuálnu estetiku — čiernobiely betón, brutalizmus, maskované postavy. Odkiaľ pramení táto fascinácia betónom a maskami?
Pred érou internetu som veľa cestoval po východnej Európe autobusom s filmovým fotoaparátom. Nerezervoval som hotely, sám som sa túlal mestami a dedinami. Odtiaľ pochádza moja láska k brutalizmu.
Maskované postavy sú alegóriami ticha, putovania, samoty, snov a nočných môr. Maska je komunikáciou s duchmi, fantastickým a nereálnym. Betón symbolizuje protiklad — tvrdú realitu.
Silná vizuálna identita je dôležitá. Vytvoriť identitu znamená vytvoriť rozdiel.
8. Album Agony of a Shadow sprevádzajú tri videoklipy. Prečo práve tieto skladby a existuje medzi nimi prepojenie?
Áno — je to vizuálna trilógia o útlaku.
„Dislocation of the Real“ — realita / nerealita, zmätok fake news.
„Into the Abyss“ — topenie sa ľudstva v perverzii a utrpení.
„Impact of Iconography“ — obraz ako nástroj útlaku a šikany.
9. Medzi prvým a druhým albumom je osem rokov. Ako prebiehal tvorivý proces?
Čas letí… Počas tých rokov som nahrával s Love in Cage a Morphoex, režíroval klipy pre francúzsku dark scénu a experimentálne krátke filmy. Album mal vyjsť skôr, ale produkčné problémy ho zdržali.
Pôvodný názov bol „Dislocation of the Real“, ale „Agony of a Shadow“ lepšie ladil s fotografiou detí na pláži v Deauville. Najťažšie bolo vybrať skladby tak, aby tvorili súdržný celok.
10. Ako funguje spolupráca medzi tebou a Stéphaneom G.?
Stéphane skladá hudbu, ja píšem texty, režírujem videá a robím fotografie.
11. Máte podobné hudobné zázemie?
Áno — obaja máme radi Camusa, The Cure, Joy Division… Stéphane však po nahratí Agony of a Shadow prestal hrať hudbu.
13. Plánujete koncerty v zahraničí?
Dúfam… Nádej nám dáva silu existovať.
14. Navštívil si Bratislavu — čo ťa zaujalo?
Miloval som Bratislavu. Brutalistický most SNP medzi starým a novým mestom je úžasný. Bohužiaľ som nestihol preskúmať modernú časť mesta… škoda. Radšej som išiel do Pezinka — kvôli bielemu vínu (hehe).
15. Poznáš nejaké kapely zo Slovenska?
Áno — The Last Days of Jesus. V Bratislave ma prekvapila náboženská horlivosť v kostoloch; vo Francúzsku sú prázdne.
16. Odporúčania na francúzsky film?
Ak máš rád Vincenta Cassela, musíš vidieť Irreversible od Gaspara Noého — extrémne násilný film.
Sám som natočil tri experimentálne krátke filmy (Phases, Robots, Dreams and Lights).
Odporúčam aj: Les Magnétiques, Innocence, Titane, Grave, Delicatessen, La cité des enfants perdus, La vie réelle, Martyrs (desivé — nie pre deti).
17. Čo ťa zaujalo naposledy?
Román László Krasznahorkai – Melanchólia odporu.
Album: francúzska kapela Unison (Lentonia Records) — podceňovaná, úžasný album.
Som fanúšik outsiderov.
A David Lynch — znovu pozerám Twin Peaks.
18. Koho by si rád videl v rozhovore na JDØS?
Americkú goth kapelu Lycia.
