Owlsilar Gate - Through the Gate of Frost (2021)

Released not long ago, in fact just last week, the second album by Owlsilar Gate - Through the Gate of Frost is an atmospheric, single-track instrumental composition that evokes images of long, cold winter days and nights, like a journey through a forest with nothing but a frosty boreal sky above and the whispers of the frozen, barren trees to keep you company. You may even feel the beauty of the Northern Lights glowing intensely during moments of deep and sometimes painful thought, or else fading to darkness during the moments when hope seems lost and desperation creeps in filling the void. However you interpret the 23-minute track, there is no denial of its ambient beauty as it transports you along through a lonely, cold, forest path on slow washes of sound and the gentle screams of the wind.
Although Through the Gate of Frost is similar to the previous album Gate, Far Away it is still very much original in its composition, like a re-imagined continuation of the original journey, still keeping the original elements of the Dungeon Synth genre. But it is far from a copy of the first album and holds it own weight, utilising pristine production and carefully-arranged timing of its keyboards. It isn’t an entirely mellow album, since there are several suspenseful moments where intensity surfaces, yet they too are eventually calmed, almost like a mother whispering a lullaby, soothing the cries of her child.
In fact, as the winds outside howled and slammed into my windows last night, I played the track before turning off the lights and going to sleep. In the morning, and still in the darkness, feeling rested and somewhat comforted, I played the track once more and contemplated the coldness of the world outside. We will all need to dress warmly if we wish to pass through the gate.
