#58 Flork Reviews: Berlin Manson - Život končí ked’ máš trinást (EP 2022)

Berlin Manson - Život končí ked’ máš trinást (EP 2022)

by Flork

First of all, Happy New Year to everyone. 2022 was a tough year for many of us and, despite the ills of the world, I want to send a positive message to everyone. I want all of you to know how much I enjoy listening to your music and having the honour of writing the reviews of your releases. I’ve heard so much amazing music the past year and still can’t believe that I get to experience all your creativity and talent, often before much of the public gets a chance to hear it too. And I have to say that despite all the evil and hate that has emerged around us, it is you who keeps me going. And for this, I thank you immensely and look forward to the year ahead and the great music I’ll continue to hear. Yet on that note, as I read the events that took place in Skalica back in December, I am sick to my stomach. If you follow my FB page, I previously posted a newspaper article about how the lead singer (Adam Dragun) of Berlin Manson received a broken jaw because the band had hung a pride flag in support of the LGBTQ community. And despite this, he continued on with the show, performing the entire set despite the blood and angony. Now if that isn’t true dedication, then I don’t know what is. A broken jaw won‘t stop the fight against homophobia, and this is exactly the type of punk spirit that gives us all hope. The show must go on.

Život končí ked’ máš trinást is a 5-track Ep of experimental, post-punk, electro-bass music with loads of sequences and duo vocals. Actually, it’s not completely experimental as many of the songs have been fine-tuned and are ready for play on stage. The production on Život končí ked’ máš trinást is also first-class and not overly mixed or saturated by noise and filler. Songs like Plamene (Flames) and Nenavidím všetko čo nie je punk (I Hate Everything That isn’t Punk) lead things off and listeners are given a taste of their style. Firstly, it must be noted that the vocals are predominantly rap with a twist of punk. It may seem strange to call this act a punk group, but in fact, it really is. Just listen closely to their messages and the anarchy expressed in their articulation. I mean, it’s far away from the Sex Pistols or Green Day, but the heart of each song is true punk. Actually, they remind me somewhat of the group Edův Syn in genre, yet still original and creative in their own style. If you check out any of their performances on Youtube, you would undoubtedly want to go to one of their concerts.

My favourite is Kulturny Kapitál, the shortest track on the Ep with a pop-synth melody and heavy bass beat. Adam delivers his message of anti-violence in what seems like one long sentence that repeats itself several times. By the way, all of the tracks are sung in Slovak so the Ep may not catch the attention of international listeners, but I doubt that Berlin Manson has any intention of reaching across its borders at the moment. There are enough problems here in Slovakia that the group needs to deal with first. And with all the fun and energy of their music, it’s also heartwarming to know that these superheroes are not just fighting on the right side of humanity, but also fighting for it. Život končí ked’ máš trinást gets a 10 out of 10 in my books, not just for its ability to make me want to get up and dance, but because of its true punk spirit and ability to send strong messages to the evil side of our society.
