#59 Flork Reviews: Jakubysko - s/t (2022)

Jakubysko - s/t (2022)

by Flork

2023 has started a bit on the stormy side, literally in fact, with rain and high winds and endless grey skies. The world is no better off than it was in 2022. And although there may not be much or any hope left for us, at least we have grindcore. And thank God for the Zvolen trio Jakubysko with their new, mesmerizing s/t release right on the precipice of the eve of this new year.

s/t begins in high gear with Nezvaný hosť (Univinted Guest), a full-throttle assualt of drums, guitar and bass that is reminiscent of a barbarian invasion gone amok. It’s a brilliant tune that lasts for just over a minute. The fury continues with Dotyk smrti (Touch of Death) and Robota IV (Work IV), two highly charged tracks that give new meaning to the genre powerviolence. But then things slow down a tad (a very wee bit in this case) with Skurvená moc (Fucking Power), the longest track on s/t (2:51), yet with no less intensity than the previous ones. Most of the songs are tight and cleverly written with masterful combinations of high-speed drumming and guitars. But time to time there are breaks in the chaos and the guys take short breathers at moments to regain energy, such as in Hlupáci (Crazy People) or Obete drog (Victims of Drugs), although these moments of lucidity tend to last for split seconds.

The rest of the album is good, heavy-weight music that combines catchy riffs and original ideas. Songs like Tieň (Shadow), Hlavolamy (Mind-bender) and Tmavý kút (Dark corner) all stay true to the fastcore genre with none of them lasting more than a minute and a half. The production is top-notch with a very clear and crisp sound, and nothing gets drowned out or is overly distorted. I think that this album will not disappoint any fan of grindcore, since all the songs are skillfully played and timed. Definitely can’t wait to see these guys live in 2023!
