Depresy - Psycold (2022)
By Flork (contact)
The boys from Trenčin have not lost their touch. In fact, they have acquired new ones. Since 1991, Depresy has stayed true to their music and songwriting, and Psycold is a solid sounding album that stays consistent with albums from the past. Lots of symphonic atmosphere, yet there are tracks that deviate from the beaten track. Desirable State, for example, is more of a rocking tune that combines old school metal with a heavy dose of death metal. Even Self Ignition continues with this style, although less so, or perhaps it is a death metal composition with a touch of classic metal. I can’t really tell, but either way I like it. It is an amazing track that goes from fast to slow and was produced and mixed brilliantly. Still, there are loads of classic death and black metal, and this is especially heard on the title track as well as on Escapism. „Escapism“ might sum up the feel of the album best. Tom/EZR from Jablka describes the album as so:
„To me, they sound like they’d like to escape their death metal shell with all these new modern elements, but somehow they’re still coming back to old school sound.“
This is extremely accurate. You can hear this in nearly all of the tracks, where vocals and lyrics and stronger than ever, and influence from other musical genres are heard in each composition.
I particularly like Tribute to Melancholy Day where these modern elements are markedly evident. Visions is also similar in this way, where melody is at the forefront and the evolution of Depresy’s songwriting skills can be heard loud and clear. It also has to be mentioned that the production of each track, as well as the lineup of the track list is genial. But let’s keep listening.
Rehap Triplet is a revert to death and black metal, atmospheric and a lot faster than the other tracks. The female vocals lend an angelic touch and enhance the beauty of the song, and it would be nice to hear more of their incorporation in future albums.
All of the songs on Psycold are „memorable“, which is a lot to say given that a lot of bands fall into long periods of stagnation and sometimes right at the beginning of their careers. But Psycold is not an album with a few standout tracks in a sea of filler. It is a carefully thought-out musical odyssey that takes the listener down a magical journey. This is apparent in the last track Thanatocenosis, where old and new meet magically, where a chemical reaction combining all the elements of atmosphere, death, life, darkness, and beauty is created. And living, breathing beauty is the result.
Fans will not be disappointed in Psycold and it can be purchased reasonably for less than 5 euros from the bandcamp.com website.
