#33 Flork! Reviews: Scary Sight - Looking for Hints of a Better Future (EP 2022)

Scary Sight - Looking for Hints of a Better Future (EP 2022)

By Flork (contact)

This band caught my attention right from the beginning. Scary Sight is a trio from Slovakia with a big sound and large potential on the commercial hardcore scene. The aptly named Intro gives the listener a “hint” to what’s ahead and in store for them with skillfully played instruments and vocals. The melody is top notch and sung in English with a heavy and deep presence. It’s a short track, maybe only a minute and a half or so, but no matter, the second track Life is Pain takes over and delivers another heavy dose of hardcore and metal that alternates between rough and clean vocals. Waiting is another rock out tune as is Lost, both of which have great composition and style, as well as production.

What is interesting about this album is that all the tracks are sung in English, which means it has the potential of attracting audiences beyond the borders of Slovakia. Admittedly, none of the tracks are overly original, with lots of comparisons to Slipknot or Five Finger Death Punch, but that’s ok still. I don’t know of any other band in Slovakia that has a similar sound to Scary Sight or even sings in this genre in English for that matter. In fact, I would say that the lead singer Vajco sings way better than Ivan Moody. Really, he’s amazing.

The last two tracks, just like the previous four, are heavy and full of energy. Trust is a bit faster and leans towards punk and hardcore, yet it’s the final track Scary Sight that makes a grand finale. This is by far the best song on the 6-track Ep, which kind of seems a bit like a continuation of Trust, but then evolves into its own with heavier drumming and guitars.

Looking for Hints of a Better Future is aptly named, considering the times of uncertainty we are living in. Fortunately, the album can be bought for a reasonable 5 euros from the bandcamp.com website. For a debut album, Scary Sight may indeed have a better future, since there is no denying the potential of this band performing to larger audiences across Europe. Still though, they also need to explore other avenues, especially with regards to song writing and the originality that accompanies it, so as not to create bad habits of repetition or the mimicking of styles by other bands who have previously commanded commercial success. In any case, Scary Sight will likely evolve in their musical career regardless of whether the future is bleak or not. Hope to see them live at some point in 2022.
